40 + 40 x 0 + 1 =

A- 1
B- 41
c- 0

I say its B-41 as you need to multiply then add. (from what i remember of standard grade maths the acroymym BOMDAS- brackets off, multiply, divide, add, subtract)

DH says its 1.

please tell he's wrong!

atyourcervix

It's thanks to maths that mumsnet can exist.

I sincerely hope you are being facetious.

LeBOF · 09/11/2011 20:05

And what was the other thing mentioned? PEDMAS?

AtYourCervix · 09/11/2011 20:06

what? why? what has maths got to do with anything?

SecretNutellaFix · 09/11/2011 20:07

It's 1.

Because 40 + 40 equals 80 which is then multiplied by 0 which isn't possible so you end up with 0 and then +1 gives you the answer of 1

AtYourCervix · 09/11/2011 20:07

theres a pedmas down the road. i keep the kids away from him.

PoppadumPreach · 09/11/2011 20:07

@ lebof

Brackets
Of
Divide
Multiply
Add
Subtract

Iggly · 09/11/2011 20:07

The sad thing is maths is so ingrained in my head, I didn't even clock the whole BODMAS thing

OhYouBadBadkitten · 09/11/2011 20:08

Brackets, order (also known as indices) division, multiplication (but it doesnt matter which way round you do those two) addition, subtraction.
If you always stick to that order when looking at a sum (or indeed algebra), it means that everyone gets the same answer :)

MintAero · 09/11/2011 20:08

I am going for 1

Shite at maths but i do remember the teacher bellowing
Anything times nought is nought at the class for years.

ShowOfHands · 09/11/2011 20:08

I am a fish.

ShowOfHands · 09/11/2011 20:08

PoppadumPreach · 09/11/2011 20:09

Because computers (and iPhones) use very smart maths to work out how to send and process information.

But really, you do know this, don't you??

ColdSancerre · 09/11/2011 20:10

Brackets Of Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction

The order in which you solve various bits of an equation, brackets first.

PEMDAS Parentheses Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction

With Parentheses being brackets and exponents being powers, square root etc.

AtYourCervix · 09/11/2011 20:10

um. no. how numbers and why not words?

melodyangel · 09/11/2011 20:10

I know it as BIDMAS

It's the order you do things in maths
so you start with anything in brackets
then any Indices
then Division
then Multiplication
then Addition
And finish with Subtraction.

Although I only know this because DS1 explained it to me. He's very clever, I'm not.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 09/11/2011 20:11

its not 'of' its 'order' the bit when you work out indices.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 09/11/2011 20:12

as melody says bodmas=bidmas indices=order not of.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 09/11/2011 20:12

Blush sorry. never knew that was so important to me!

ColdSancerre · 09/11/2011 20:12

I was taught it as of, but order makes more sense and BIDMAS makes even more sense. PEMDAS also I think more sensible.

blackeyedsusan · 09/11/2011 20:15

erm, were we supposed to have been taught this at school?

PastaLaVista · 09/11/2011 20:16

This has been doing the rounds on the internet for years and years.

ColdSancerre · 09/11/2011 20:17

I was taught it at juniors, Mr Nickle.

I'm on my phone and feeding DS, so can't go into detail, but at it's most basic level, computers work in binary (1 or 0) so it's all about the numbers.

BeyondThePail · 09/11/2011 20:17

Strange, like LeBOF, when I first looked at it the numbers around the x looked closer, but I think that's just the type face.

Doing the x first in that sum is right.
