40 + 40 x 0 + 1 =

A- 1
B- 41
c- 0

I say its B-41 as you need to multiply then add. (from what i remember of standard grade maths the acroymym BOMDAS- brackets off, multiply, divide, add, subtract)

DH says its 1.

If there are no brackets then you do the multiplication first and then the addition so its
40 x 0 = 0
40+ 0 + 1=41

Bollocks, it's 41 according to google calculator.

Tell him: If you're at the lower end of primary then the answer is 1. Because you answer from left to right.

However as soon as you know BODMAS, dd1 did it in year 4, you do the Mulitplication first and end up with 41.

Cervix you don't assume there are brackets. You just divide/multiply first. So in this equation the divide/multiply section is 40x0 = 0

Then you add/subtract so 40+1 = 41

You only do the brackets first if there are brackets, which in this equation there aren't.

mama the O is for 'off' brackets off ie take them away first...

There is no subjectivity in this matter whatsoever.

Because your spacing suggests the latter, but I'm not sure if that's a deliberate ploy to confuse us or not?

It has to be read as 40 + (40 x 0) + 1 because multiplication takes precedence over addition.
