40 + 40 x 0 + 1 =

A- 1
B- 41
c- 0

I say its B-41 as you need to multiply then add. (from what i remember of standard grade maths the acroymym BOMDAS- brackets off, multiply, divide, add, subtract)

DH says its 1.

please tell he's wrong!

It's 0, because anything x zero is 0.

BeyondThePail · 09/11/2011 19:54

And is it handwritten?

BeyondThePail · 09/11/2011 19:54

Or a text book?

MamaChocoholic · 09/11/2011 19:54

tiger in maths you always do multiply/divide before add/subtract.

so 40 + 40x0 + 1 = 40 + 0 + 1 = 41

can someone tell me what the O in BODMAS is for?

APipkinOfPepper · 09/11/2011 19:54

It is 41
40 + 0 + 1 = 41

To be 1 you would need brackets:
( 40 + 40 ) x 0 + 1 = 1

BeyondThePail · 09/11/2011 19:54

Or a print out?

IloveJudgeJudy · 09/11/2011 19:54

Oops, didn't read question properly - it's 1.

BeyondThePail · 09/11/2011 19:54

It is for a child isn't it?

BeyondThePail · 09/11/2011 19:55

From a school?

BeyondThePail · 09/11/2011 19:55

Or do you and DH dabble in this sort of thing for fun?

Confused
AtYourCervix · 09/11/2011 19:55

DD1 thinks 41.

No brackets
No exponents
No indices
No divide
Multiply first - 40*0 = 0
Then add = 40+0+1 = 41

AtYourCervix · 09/11/2011 19:57

but why do you assume the brackets would be around the (40x0)? and not (40+40)

Ambi · 09/11/2011 19:57

41

bruffin · 09/11/2011 19:57

Ds yr11 topset says 41 using Bodmas

TheVermiciousKnid · 09/11/2011 19:57

40 + (40x0) + 1 =
40 + 0 + 1 =
41

As the second 40 needs to be multiplied by 0 first (taking precedence over the addition), I can't see how it can be anything other than 41.

ColdSancerre · 09/11/2011 19:57

41

not to be a twat or anything but yes, it's 41. Definitely. The level of oaths knowledge is pretty poor on this thread i believe. Multiplication is done first. It could only be 1 if 40+40 was in brackets.

TheVermiciousKnid · 09/11/2011 19:58

but why do you assume the brackets would be around the (40x0)? and not (40+40)

Because you multiply before you add.

CeliaFate · 09/11/2011 19:58

1 is the answer. Isn't it?!

minimuffy · 09/11/2011 19:58

no textbook, its a daft facebook question.....

EdithWeston · 09/11/2011 19:59

Atyourcervix: because that's the rule. The "M" in BODMAS tells you the order in which you do things. You don't just read left to right.

BeyondThePail · 09/11/2011 19:59

Generally, don't the brackets go around multiplication parts of a sequence?
