Blackbird in my bedroom! Get it out! Get it out!

what do I do?!

I have NEVER moved so fast, was in bed it flew in the window like a bat out of hell and I've ran out slamming the door behind me.

Now tell me it's likely to fly out on his accord whilst I do the school run?

I was wondering whether to phone the bird people again, he's moving around the room and was flying around when I went in, but his exit is huge with no obstructions, maybe there's something wrong with him if he's unable to get out?

I'm in the uni library studying that should be pretending to study whilst actually mumsnetting and the following two statements have had me in stitches:

"Trevor tried in vain to chase off the bird attached to his wife's head using a rolled up Bettaware catalogue and resorted to distracting the bird by throwing his toupee in the air"

And

"I screamed but it was muffled by the gas mask"

Proper shaking with silent laughter :)

Thank you brightening up a previously dull essay writing day! Grin

I really very nearly linked to the scene in The Birds where Humperdink the heroine goes into her bedroom with horrific results. But on reflection it seemed just a bit too horrific. It might have taken Humperdink over the edge.

KateeHasABunInHerOven · 12/05/2011 16:12

If he's flying and standing around normally then I would guess he isn't ill. Is he panting at all? Default position for birds seems to be flying around in circles if they get trapped so may be too panicked to notice the window.

Sidge · 12/05/2011 16:12

Get Peter Andre round to take it out.

He likes dippy birds.

HumperdinkFangboner · 12/05/2011 16:13

Was that article from the evening standard real?? Was hilarious!

mummylin2495 · 12/05/2011 16:17

HumperdinkFangboner · 12/05/2011 16:22

I have a fishing net. I don't want to anger hurt him though.

I will whittle one of these for you OP

Modified Australian crow trap for jackdaws;

Materials Needed:

28 8 foot, 2 x 2-inch boards

Cut these into:

12, 8 feet; 10, 6 feet; 4, 4 feet; 4, 34 inches; 6,

30 inches; 2, 22 inches; 17, 12 inches

1 8 foot, 1 x 6-inch board 56 feet of 4-foot-high, 1 x 2-inch wire mesh 24 4 1/2 inch bolts with wing nuts and 2 washers

2 small door hinges

1 door hook latch or locking style

3 1/2 inch nails, staples, haywire

Assembly Instructions:

Construct the entrance ladder. Cover both ends with wire-mesh pieces 7 x 16 inches. Make two side, top, and end panels. One end panel is constructed with a support beam in the center (as pictured in the assembled trap) and the other with a door. Cut and tightly staple wire mesh to the inside walls. Cut or file any sharp projections that will protrude into the cage. Assemble the trap, holding it together with baling wire. Drill 10 holes in the end panels (shown in d) and through the adjacent panels. Put bolts through these holes with washers on both sides and secure with wing nuts. The side panels and entrance ladder can be snugly held to the top panels with haywire or bolts.

If you can have that to me before 6pm suncottage, my dad would be most grateful.

mummylin2495 · 12/05/2011 16:37

to be fair OP i would not like a bird flapping around either.I love them in the garden but dont want one in my house.I dont like it when im at my brothers and he wants to let his parrot fly around. Not long now anyway till your dad gets there. I do hope said bird is not just scouting around for somewhere cosy to bring / raise a family in !

Buda · 12/05/2011 16:37

You do realise that a lot of you are proper bonkers???

Grin
Buda · 12/05/2011 16:38

Any betting it will fly out of its own accord just as Humperdink's dad arrives??

ExitPursuedByALamb · 12/05/2011 16:39

Gosh Suncottage - That is lovely - could you paint it in F&B Dead Salmon and I'll take two.

HumperdinkFangboner · 12/05/2011 16:47

But it's not a bird! It's a bloody pterodactyl (does it have a silent p?). Tis huge.

ExitPursuedByALamb · 12/05/2011 16:48

We really do need a photo ...........

HumperdinkFangboner · 12/05/2011 16:53

If my dad catches it I'll get a photo, but I'm not getting back into my gas mask just for a photo opportunity, it might flap again, it's scary when it flaps!

OP posts:
keep · 12/05/2011 16:55

Sorry, My overactive imagination made the news story up!

Is it sparrowhawks that attack other birds? Could the jackdaw be hiding from it and be too scared to go back outside?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/05/2011 17:06

A sparrowhawk wouldn't worry a corvid. The clue is in the name. Grin

I did once see a corvid (probably a jackdaw) mobbed by swifts, though. I'm guessing egg/baby stealing was going on.

Wordwork · 12/05/2011 17:24

OldLady, I saw a crow mobbing a heron the other day. Never seen that before. I suppose that must mean that herons aren't above stealing a few baby birds as well as scoffing fish.

OnlyWantsOne · 12/05/2011 18:02

Well. It's 6pm.

I hope your dad is there OP

If not, Keep's recipe is one to make even Jamie Oliver proud.

BistoBear · 12/05/2011 18:07

Herons are horrible birds that will eat anything! TMI ALERT - I saw one trying to eat a little duckling when the little duckling was still alive! It couldn't swallow it so the manky heron held the little duckling under the water until it drowned then swallowed it whole! This was all in front of the mother duck and the other little ducklings, horrid! :(

I know it's only nature but I couldn't bear to see another duckling killed so I threw a stick towards the heron so it flew away - I like to think it didn't come back and all the other ducklings lived to tell the tale! :)
