Need to name and shame kid friendly restaurants without single sex toilets

I've come across 2 'kid friendly' restaurants with toilets that open out onto communal sink areas. I have unfortunately found this out while out with my 8 year old daughter after we had booked and ordered food. We need to try and pressure restaurants that market themselves as child friendly to display their toliet policies on the website so we can make the choice to book or not. I would love to have a list of those that don't have single sex toliets as policy. I know Giraffe don't guarantee single sex and Bills Restaurants have a chain policy of 'communal' toliets in all of them. Can anybody add to this ?

You honestly don't understand why women and girls need safety, privacy and dignity, @Sofiewoo? Especially why rape survivors and DV survivors don't want to be retraumatised by seeing a male in what should be a safe space for females?

What has that got to do with this specific phrasing of “family friendly” suggesting mixed use sinks makes a restaurant no longer family friendly?
I don’t think it’s a common view point that washing your hands is private activity of needs to be a “safe space for women”.

Oh seriously, this is such a silly thing to say.

Please explain why.

No transman would want to use the women's bathrooms but if men werepretending to be trans to get into bathrooms beside, why wouldn't they still now?

Trans men are women and trans women are men.

It's easier for a man to pretend to be a trans woman than it is for him to pretend to be a trans man.

Oh, you want single sex toilets.

OK.

How does this help a ten year old girl who is eating at a restaurant with her dad?

A 10 year old girl can go to the toilet by herself if it’s a single sex toilet. The point the OP is making is that most of us wouldn’t feel comfortable sending our daughters into a mixed sex toilet with individual cubicles but shared sinks and dryers.

Would you want your daughter in a room, out of sight, with strange men?

I have recently started letting my daughter go to the toilet by herself in restaurants but I would have to go with her if it wasn’t single sex.

Also, men (not all, but a lot according to my husband and male friends) piss all over the toilet seat and floor and don’t wash their hands. My husband used to hate taking our daughter into the men’s toilets when she was younger. Another reason not to want mixed sex toilets.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/04/2025 08:59

I think a lot of people are rather naively assuming that Wednesday's Supreme Court ruling means that predatory males using women's toilets is a thing of the past.

I don’t think it’s a common view point that washing your hands is private activity of needs to be a “safe space for women”.

The issue is that we don’t want to send our daughters into an enclosed, out of sight room with strange men. The cubicles might be enclosed (though often don’t have floor to ceiling doors) but as soon as you leave the cubicle to wash and dry your hands you are potentially in a room with strange men. Surely you can understand why that is dangerous? As a mother of an 8 year old girl, I wouldn’t let her use these toilets alone, in the same way that I wouldn’t let her go into the men’s toilets alone.

I have come to expect that toilets are single sex and have recently started letting my daughter take herself to the toilet in restaurants by herself, but with the increasing use of mixed toilets I’m going to have to start checking the toilet situation before letting her go.

To all those saying you don’t have a problem with this, would you let your daughters go into the men’s toilets alone if they didn’t contain urinals? It’s effectively the same thing.

Sorry got derailed, my point is that the OP wants to name and shame family restaurants with individual cubicle toilets and a communal sink area so that they then have single sex toilets and no man with a young DD can come into the sink area of a women’s single sex loos.

But then she says the same man can come with his young DD into the sink area of the women’s single sex loos if he is going to use a baby change area,

I don’t see how one is any worse than the other?

Edited

Oh I agree. There’s no difference and I don’t get OP’s angst. Given the type of restaurant a communal sink area seems quite handy to me.

Trans men are women and trans women are men.

It's easier for a man to pretend to be a trans woman than it is for him to pretend to be a trans man.

Can I clarify - is the second option a man pretending to be a transman as that seems rather circular… though I would have thought it pretty easy for a man to pretend to be a transman

No, it's difficult for a man to pretend to be a trans man because trans men are female and look like women.

LittleBearPad · 22/04/2025 11:02

What about your 8 year old son? Would you send him into the men’s alone.

Plus let’s not ignore the fact that there’s no magic repeller on a ladies loo door that stops anyone with xy chromosomes from entering.

A communal sink area makes a lot of sense in family restaurants plus the sink area is likely to be busier because there are twice as many people going in and out further reducing the risk of someone assaulting anyone

User5274959 · 22/04/2025 13:32

I'm sorry OP I can't get incensed about this; there are bigger fish to fry.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 22/04/2025 06:16

The baby changing room in the women’s loos? Really? A man going in there?

If the only baby changing facility is in the ladies, that's sex discrimination so complain.

To which they can reply they are a transman using the toilet aligned with their sex.

Look at the pelvis, browbone, hands, feet, and lack of Adam's apple to gauge the truth of that assertion.

A man pretending to be transman can be excluded from a women toliet if it is believed they're a man. Unlikely to happen ,but the law is on our side . Transmen can be excluded for the same reason.

We can also legally refuse a transman if we belive they are male . The transman 'gotcha' is still covered by law.

I'm now wondering whether the real reason the Supreme Court and the EHRC have felt the need to make this point is not because they think passing trans men in the women's toilets is likely to be an issue, but because they suspect that twerps like Owen Jones might make a point of using the women's toilets and then claiming to be trans men. (Owen Jones could definitely pass as a trans man.)

Can I just confirm

If a woman has a son and he wants to go to the toilet (for a poo)

She should ask a random man to keep an eye on him?

We will do what we have always done and the boy comes into the womens with his mother if he is under a certain age. What do you think would happen ?People are behaving as if everybody has forgotten how to go use sex segregated toilets in the last 15 years
