Need to name and shame kid friendly restaurants without single sex toilets

I've come across 2 'kid friendly' restaurants with toilets that open out onto communal sink areas. I have unfortunately found this out while out with my 8 year old daughter after we had booked and ordered food. We need to try and pressure restaurants that market themselves as child friendly to display their toliet policies on the website so we can make the choice to book or not. I would love to have a list of those that don't have single sex toliets as policy. I know Giraffe don't guarantee single sex and Bills Restaurants have a chain policy of 'communal' toliets in all of them. Can anybody add to this ?

There are too many threads about loos! As for the person who wants to check her skirt isn’t in her pants - do that before you come out the cubicle!

"Unisex cubicals" ? What are you talking about ?

A unisex cubical means anybody can use it.

Indianajet · 21/04/2025 17:10

Some people do seem rather obsessed with toilets!

Bananafofana · 21/04/2025 17:13

i am supportive of the SC decision and loathe communal toilets as there’s usually piss all over the floor and seat BUT as the mother of 2 boys it’s much more convenient for me to have communal loos so I can keep an eye on them once they became too old to use the ladies (say around 8 yo max). I’m not going to ask a man to keep an eye on them in the gents (to switch the sex of your example of a dad asking a woman to keep an eye on his daughter in single sex ladies loos).

Seventree · 21/04/2025 17:14

If they marketed this I would actively choose restaurants that open out into a communal sink area, especially as my boys get older. I'd much rather that than worry about sending my sons into toilets on there own.

Same issue with my niece when she's out with her dad (and no, he can't just ask a random woman to take her in. That's inappropriate in a number of ways 🙄).

Not every restaurant has a separate baby change with a toilet inside for parents of the opposite sex to use with their child.

You want single sex toilets. @quietlysad 's DH's incident happened in a place with single sex toilets. If the toilets in this case had been unisex, there wouldn't have been a problem. But you don't want unisex toilets.

IdaGlossop · 21/04/2025 17:02

You are defeating your own argument, OP. Had the cubicles been unisex, @quietlysad 's DH wouldn't have had to deal with this embarrassing situation.

It was because they were unisex that it happened. Had they been single sex, thd father would be in the gents and the girls in the ladies.

batterypower · 21/04/2025 17:18

By all means compile a list but I’m not sure it’s going to ‘shame’ any restaurant chain.

It isn’t, the poster said it was a single sex toilet

Marieb19 · 21/04/2025 17:23

Family restaurants generally serve late into the evening and also serve alcohol. My sons aren't keen on shared loos as they feel some girls will be suspicious of them being in there and recognuse they could be intimidating especially when a few guys are in the loos together.

@quietlysad says quite clearly that the toilets in the Pizza Express were single sex, so the girls were using the gents and foolishly made a fuss when her DH opened the unlocked door.

quietlysad · 21/04/2025 17:24

Apologies for the confusion they were unisex toilets!! So just one set of toilets for both men and women.

All cubicals are single sex . The toilet becomes unisex when the washbasins are in a mixed area. Individual lockable toliets with their own washwasins are not cubicals.

The child who was sexually assaulted by Katie Dolatowski in the Morrisons toilets while her dad waited outside was 10.

Had Dolatowski been challenged by a bystander upon entering that women's loo, which, if we didn't have de facto self-id, he might have been, he wouldn't have been there to sexually assault that girl.

IKEA have women's multiple cubicle loos, men's multiple cubicle loos, disabled loos, and a unisex family loo big enough to take a buggy into. If a venue is meant to be family-friendly, this is an appropriate approach to take.

The problem is not the unisex toilets but the girls not locking the door. At 12, they should have known better.

I expect my 8 year old daughter to be able to go into a toilet and not have the cubical open onto a room full of men. I also don't expect her to have to take me into the loos with her until she's an adult. What did families do before unisex toliets? Stay at home?

Don’t be ridiculous.
it’s a restaurant toilet, it’s not going to be a room full of men, they’ll be women and children also. All washing their hands and then leaving.

if you’re sending her in on her own then a man who wants to assault children will be just as likely to go and hide in a single sex toilets than in unisex toilets.
the more people in there, the safer she is. Safer for the little boys with mothers and the daughters with their fathers too who can now check on their children.

There won't always be a bystander willing to challenge though.

I agree with you that the IKEA approach is ideal, but not all places have enough space for that.

Had the girls been in the ladies with the door unlocked, no harm done because a woman would have seen them, not a man.

minnienono · 21/04/2025 17:31

Can’t see the issue with unisex cubicles but I prefer handwashing inside the cubicle for hygiene reasons. A few large unisex cubicles is easier for families including those of us who have older children with sn, means that we don’t need to clog up the only disabled toilet with baby change (dsd needs help but isn’t in a wheelchair)

No harm was done anyway, the girls might have kicked up a fuss about a woman opening the door too. At 12 they were old enough to confidently lock the cubical door.

Why aren't individual lockable toilets with their own wash basins not cubicles? A cubicle is a small room. To check, you want two separate sets of toilets, a male and a female, with cubicles with a toilet in each (single sex obviously) and washbasins outside the cubicles. What you don't want are unisex toilets ie a cubicle with a toilet in it that can be used by anyone, with washbasins outside, also for anyone to use, or a cubicles with a toilet and a washbasin in it that anyone can use.

So do we put bodyguards outside all toilets? Checking the genitals of those who want to go in?

ikea is a massive store, you can’t expect a small restaurant to have that many toilet options.

TasWair · 21/04/2025 17:40

So you're not talking about unisex toilets. You're taking about the horror of having to wash your hands in the same sink as a man.
Honestly, sex inequality is rife, violence against women is on the rise and there are so, so many battles that need to be won to keep women safe. But you don't want to wash your hands in the same sink as a man.

Not every restaurant has a separate baby change with a toilet inside for parents of the opposite sex to use with their child.

Plus if they do, the baby change is often also the disabled loo, therefore decreasing access to disabled facilities by people who really need them.
