Need to name and shame kid friendly restaurants without single sex toilets

I've come across 2 'kid friendly' restaurants with toilets that open out onto communal sink areas. I have unfortunately found this out while out with my 8 year old daughter after we had booked and ordered food. We need to try and pressure restaurants that market themselves as child friendly to display their toliet policies on the website so we can make the choice to book or not. I would love to have a list of those that don't have single sex toliets as policy. I know Giraffe don't guarantee single sex and Bills Restaurants have a chain policy of 'communal' toliets in all of them. Can anybody add to this ?

Shame? Why?

MrsFaustus · 21/04/2025 16:24

Am I missing something? I prefer the cubicles opening from a communal and visible area. My oldest gc now wants to use the men’s’ loos and I feel it’s safer for him on his own with both men and women going in and out.

IdaGlossop · 21/04/2025 16:25

What exactly is the issue?

AmateurNoun · 21/04/2025 16:27

I think OP means "without"

Mumsntfan1 · 21/04/2025 16:27

What's the issue? Doesn't it make it easier for a Dad to take his young daughter to the toilet? If your talking about children young enough to need a 'Kid Friendly' restaurant a parent will be taking them to the toilet.

I missed out the word 'don't' as in 'don't have single sex toliets' trying to work out how to delete!

What exactly do you want, OP?

Family restaurants… far easier if dad can take DD to toilets too

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 21/04/2025 16:29

Oh, you want single sex toilets.

OK.

How does this help a ten year old girl who is eating at a restaurant with her dad?

You can report your original post and ask for the title to be amended

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 21/04/2025 16:31

Thats quite the typo! Maybe ask to delete this thread and start again?

Naam · 21/04/2025 16:31

For kid friendly restaurants this seems the perfect set up for most people? If it’s a huge problem for your family, this feels like a ring and check situation before booking?

No. If a man is with a daughter who is too young to wipe her own bottom he uses the baby changing room. If she's older he does what was the norm 15 years ago and let's her go in alone or asks a women to keep an eye on her.

You can’t delete on mn yourself. You need to report your thread and they will delete/or you can ask them to change the typo

My 8 year old can wipe her own bum but is scared of locking the door and going in toilets on her own. He doesn’t need to go in a cubical with her but does need to stand outside it. You are over simplifying to meet your own narrative.

Same here.
We have never encountered an issue.

Also pretty frequently the baby change is only in female toilets! Or they have a baby change but not a toilet.

drspouse · 21/04/2025 16:36

Report your OP and MN will change the title.

I don't like wash hand basins that are unisex, there is no point in having single sex cubicles in that case. In a restaurant you might be better having self contained cubicles (I know there are arguments against these but restaurants have a high turnover so usually someone would report a cubicle that's been occupied for ages).

yeesh · 21/04/2025 16:37

how dramatic 🤣

This wouldn't bother me at all. Just been abroad and nearly all the restaurants have this arrangement. Seems far more practical. So no, I won't add restaurants to your list of shame.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 21/04/2025 16:38

But it’s better like this surely! My husband hates taking daughter in the men’s when they are out! It’s always pretty grim! These kind of toilets are way better.

And my sons? Should I be ok with them going into the men’s toilets, with urinals, without me? Or are younger boys in a toilet space with older men they don’t know ok in your eyes?

ScaryM0nster · 21/04/2025 16:38

So are you pro or anti the ones that have quality cubicles and open area sinks?

And are you pro or anti ones that have individual rooms that can be used by anyone?

To me, those are both the ideal for family friendly type venues. The traditional separate men’s / women’s are a challenge as it’s difficult to manage the mum/son or dad / daughter combo without jamming up the disabled / baby change or taking a child into the one they’d rather not use.
