Are there any potato peelers around?

Yep, peeling away

LolaMontezz · 29/04/2022 17:39

PoseyFlump · 29/04/2022 17:02

@LolaMontezz Grin I guess you need a lot of stock phrases at your disposal to reply quickly to have a good hourly rate?!

I'm thick skinned but I'm just not sure if I'd get sick of it. I'm fed up with waiting for higher paid opportunities that end up being less per hour when the works not there!

You do, however the more I did it the easier it was to have the phrases and conversation starters to hand so to speak, so it was easy enough to bash out quick responses.

The problem I found was that when I worked it you had to book shifts and sometimes there were very few messages to respond to and you are only paid per message sent, so you could book a shift, which you're obligated to be there for and earn a quid in an hour if it's quiet. Hence why it sort of fell by the wayside for me as it just wasn't reliable enough.

I can't really remember many more details as it was a while ago that I did it now and I don't know if it's changed at all. I know you had to hit a minimum number of messages sent per month, I think it was 1,000 and they removed you if you didn't managed that.

LolaMontezz · 29/04/2022 17:48

Also IIRC I think @GachaBread worked for them too for a while? They may be able to give more info or correct me if I've got bits of that wrong Grin

GachaBread · 29/04/2022 20:38

I did indeed @LolaMontezz but left on bad terms due to them withholding a payment on me. Done it for a good year I think and can mirror exactly what you said. I used to bang out 300 a msgs a day at 0.10 per message (minus PayPal and currency charges) It got me through a very hard time in my life. Some of you older members might remember a few of my breakdowns haha! The money was alright for what it was but I hear the people who run it have got that more greedier and now pay 0.05 per message so it really ain't worth it unless your really desperate. There are other companies other than clouds but I've forgotten who they are but a good google search should reveal who they are.

Just got my marching orders from Nile, only on for 9 months, gutted because it was such an easy tenner a day

howfartospar · 29/04/2022 21:03

Sorry to hear that - what is Nile, please?

peabrainer · 29/04/2022 22:47

howfartospar · 29/04/2022 21:03

Sorry to hear that - what is Nile, please?

It's a daily project on Appen that involves rating Facebook ads

LolaMontezz · 30/04/2022 06:19

Hope you're doing ok now @GachaBread - I remember you being so incredibly motivated to make as much as possible ❤️ I hope things are better for you now Flowers

Newrunner29 · 30/04/2022 08:00

Can I ask if its classed as proper work and the tax man gets involved with Appen? I'm confused when reading website? I get carers allowance so does not want to mess that up

Newrunner29 · 30/04/2022 08:02

When I say proper work I don't mean that in a rude way just trying to distinguish between what goverment class as work

GachaBread · 30/04/2022 09:15

@LolaMontezz thank you for your kind words. I'm doing really well now. In full time work, do a little mystery shopping on the side when I can fit it in too. It took three attempts to leave my ex but finally free of him now which has enabled me to build bridges with friends and family. Don't get me wrong life is still stressful especially with 5 children but it's that good normal type of stress if that makes sense. I'm happier, kids are happier. This thread literally saved my life and sanity way back then and it's nice to see many of you still active doing your thing. Sending lots of love to you MsMontez ❤️

LolaMontezz · 30/04/2022 09:53

Good to hear @GachaBread Smile well done you!! It's amazing how life changing these threads can be for people Grin they've helped me pay off debts that I'd still have now had I not started. It can be a slog at times and seem like it's pointless and you'll never make anything but every little bit really does help! I'm so glad i found these threads and started ❤️

I'm still here. It's my main sideline. I had Nile back in the day but never got a regular project since ( never passed any of their rating exams). I have prolific but that's sporadic. I would truly like another Nile!

PoseyFlump · 01/05/2022 09:08

Thank you @LolaMontezz and @GachaBread for all the info. It's the booking a shift and not getting any work that puts me off. That and wondering if I'd get 'writers block' Grin

Also lovely to hear how these threads have helped. I learned about matched betting here and it's literally saved my ass a few times!

I have a ‘proper job’ as well as this and declare everything I make via self assessment.

you are effectively self employed, so Appen have no involvement in your tax arrangements.
You are allowed to earn an amount before tax is paid, however I have zero knowledge about carers allowance/benefits so can’t advise on that.

RosaMoschata · 02/05/2022 14:14

YonderTweek · 28/04/2022 09:54

I'm not getting anything on Ap these days. I literally made like $40 last month and none this month (maybe some A**r returns hopefully).

I hope it picks up because otherwise I'm going to have to find a real job. Or maybe I could try something like Rev again. Although their website isn't working for me so they're probably not doing much either. Grin I passed the Potato test two years ago so that's not going to happen either. I've been looking at ModSquad for yonks but for some reason can't bring myself to do it. Hoping for a miracle clearly...

You never know @Yonder! I passed the test in January 2020 and got the call to put my hairnet on and start peeling last month - March 2022! I'm not earning anything yet - would genuinely be 3 times better off in an actual chippie, but I'm hanging on in there trying to get faster. Trouble is I need to look up so many words up in the Urban Dictionary Grin

ruralwanderer · 02/05/2022 16:15

@Gachabread, I'm so glad you're doing well! Your posts on these threads are what inspired me to keep going when I was struggling to find enough work to make this sideline worthwhile and now (2 years on!) I'm finding the opposite - I have too much work :D It's a nice problem to have.

I've smashed my £250 target for April, and am taking home £317.68 which I'm delighted with, especially as the kids were off school for 2 weeks over the Easter holidays so fitting work in was trickier than usual.

This was made up of:

Appen - $27.96
Crisp - £76.46
Search Sciences - £215
Prolific - £28.92
Intellizoom - $5

I'm aiming for £400 this month as I've got some good regular income strands now and a few days exam invigilating too.

@ruralwanderer awww so nice of you to say. Great totals too! I can't really match any of you these days as work and family commitments don't allow it but today I have done 10 perfect shelf missions on BeMyEye. Wanted to prove to myself that I could still do these missions and also the desire to earn money was strong lol . I have had 7 approved and 1 sent back for an error that is my fault. I have 3 more booked to do but I'm tired and don't know if I can keep going. Not sure if stores close early today either.
