Can't tell anyone, paid the mortgage off today!

We don't really talk about finances to friends or family so it would seem a bit odd to tell anyone but I feel like I want to celebrate!
After years of overpaying on our mortgage, we paid it off today! It feels a bit of an anticlimax so far because it will take a little while to get the deeds etc (if we even get sent a copy now, maybe it's all digital). But it's a really big event!

Congratulations! That’s excellent news. Are you going to celebrate? 🥳

Shmithecat2 · 02/02/2022 13:41

That's amazing!

Thatsplentyjack · 02/02/2022 13:41

You should celebrate. Go for dinner, or do something nice.

Gladioli23 · 02/02/2022 13:41

Congratulations! Hope you have a bottle of something nice to pop tonight in celebration!

Eileen101 · 02/02/2022 13:43

Wahey! Living the dream! (Well mine anyway 😂)

Congratulations! What are you doing to celebrate?

puddlesofmothers · 02/02/2022 13:45

It's a really big deal, really brilliant! Xx

Madcats · 02/02/2022 13:45

I remember the joy we felt when we did this. It makes life a lot less stressful if one of you has a precarious job or wants to switch careers.

Congratulations!

MovinOnUp · 02/02/2022 13:46

That's fantastic, You should go out and celebrate!

Akite · 02/02/2022 13:48

Thank you! I might pop a bottle of fizz in the fridge for later, Dh doesn't drink so it'd be just for me. He can have a glass of kombucha Grin
The main celebration will be going on a big holiday this summer, we haven't yet found the right place but we are looking

Many congrats OP. I felt the same when I paid mine off in 2014. I haven't looked back. There are always bills to pay in life but knowing that your home is yours outright is a great feeling. Celebrate, and feel proud Flowers Cake

megletthesecond · 02/02/2022 13:50

Oh bless. I understand. Congrats.
Mine is gone in December and while I'll be dead excited I can't really shout about it.
Then it goes on gcse tutors and driving lessons.

rhij86 · 02/02/2022 13:52

Fantastic news, well done you!!
I'm not at all jealous Grin

Seriously though, well done :)

TheDogsMother · 02/02/2022 13:54

Congratulations that's great news. All your efforts have paid off.

If you can try and get a photo of the zero balance on your mortgage account. I managed to get mine just before it disappeared off the Santander app.

SocialConnection · 02/02/2022 13:55

I am so jealous!!!!!

Congratulations!

DoorMatCat · 02/02/2022 13:56

Congratulations. It's a wonderful achievement.

I completely understand what you said about the anticlimactic feelings though. We went through this last year. We paid ours off as a bit of a birthday present to both of us.

I would say the only time it resonates with me is when people talk about "equity" especially in percentage terms. You now have 100% equity! Again, congratulations!

Now, more exciting (or boring) what are you going to use the "spare" £££ for?

Aposterhasnoname · 02/02/2022 13:56

Congratulations, we did this last year, and it does feel a bit anti climatic because nothing really happens. Wait till next month though when you have that extra cash!!

Deeds are digital now. Log on to the land registry and you can download a copy of the entry.

itwasntaparty · 02/02/2022 13:56

Drink the fizz and book a holiday! Congratulations 🎉

Aposterhasnoname · 02/02/2022 13:57

Oh yes. Do this, but be quick, we managed to get ours but the accounts vanished within a day or so.
JLQ1020 · 02/02/2022 13:59

Congratulations!

Re the Deeds you will be sent them but depending where in the UK you live you might not get them sent directly. In NI they must be sent to a solictor.
Also highly recommend you think about where you will keep the Deeds, seek out a solictor to hold these or a safety deposit box rather than at home. Reason not to keep at home is due to fire, theft, flood etc.

Defender90 · 02/02/2022 13:59

Congratulations, we were lucky enough to pay ours off in 2019 and it's the best feeling ever!

Enjoy that fizz and enjoy that holiday when you find the one you want Wine

HappyEm81 · 02/02/2022 14:00

Congratulations 🥳 That's fantastic news. Enjoy celebrating!

This is something me and my husband talk about quite a bit. Last year we increased our monthly payments and we are also overpaying; hoping for it to be paid off in 4-5 years, can't wait!

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 02/02/2022 14:01

seek out a solictor to hold these or a safety deposit box rather than at home. Reason not to keep at home is due to fire, theft, flood etc.

The house we bought (probate property) had no deeds as the solicitor’s office flooded and they lost all the deeds they held. So make sure they store them up high!

Iggyplop · 02/02/2022 14:03

Wow! Congratulations such a massive achievement, you must be chuffed to bits.

Akite · 02/02/2022 14:05

Ah good point about screenshot! I still have one of our bank balance when we sold the last place - our intended purchase fell through so we took the equity and rented for a few months.
Money is just going to go on university fund for the kids and house repairs. We bought an old money pit. 🤦🏻‍♀️

🥳🍾Congratulations 🥂🍸🤩

I was going to suggest to save the amount of money you used to pay for 6 months then go on a big mortgage-free, post-Covid holiday but I see you've got a holiday booked already😎
