Can't tell anyone, paid the mortgage off today!

We don't really talk about finances to friends or family so it would seem a bit odd to tell anyone but I feel like I want to celebrate!
After years of overpaying on our mortgage, we paid it off today! It feels a bit of an anticlimax so far because it will take a little while to get the deeds etc (if we even get sent a copy now, maybe it's all digital). But it's a really big event!

Great step Wine well done!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/02/2022 16:08

Oh well done! We have 14 years left if we push the overpayment, 19 if we don't. And we've had a mortgage for the last 13 years. It just feels relentless. Can't wait!

Whatwillbetheendofus · 02/02/2022 16:11

Well done, will hopefully be in the same position in a couple of years. Enjoy your bubbly

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 02/02/2022 16:13

That's fabulous! Well done! 🎉🎉🎉

caringcarer · 02/02/2022 16:16

Oh that is a momentus moment for you. Definitely celebrate. We pay ours off, after also massively overpaying, in 25 months. We can't wait.

Terfydactyl · 02/02/2022 16:20

Well done. Celebrate any way you like.
I'm not far off paying mine in full (for the second time and hopefully last time)
I never told a soul, some will be happy for you, some wont. And I agree it should ge a fanfare. I'll have spent 20 years of my life paying off this mortgage and I would love some kind of ticker-tapeparade-- event marking the occasion.

TollgateDebs · 02/02/2022 16:22

Well done, isn't it a lovely feeling when it happens! We overpaid for years and it was well worth doing that and seeing the zero balance. Enjoy.

Creditcardshame · 02/02/2022 16:24

Congratulations OP! Can you share how you did it? Timelines etc? Do you mind if I ask how old you are?
We sold and bought last year and although we had saved extra so we didn't need to borrow more we increased the term of the mortgage and fixed at a lower rate so the monthly payment is lower.

We promised ourselves that we would keep our higher payments but of course, we haven't! We changed the DD back up to our old payment now as we really would like to keep to the original term - otherwise we will be in our 60's and still paying it off.

Oh and definitely have the fizz! Enjoy!

Benjispruce5 · 02/02/2022 16:26

Congratulations OP! We repaid ours a few years ago and it was such a great feeling. We didn’t tell anyone either.

ABitOfAShitShow · 02/02/2022 16:27

Brilliant! Well done, you! (And the husband.)

I wish I was as sensible as you. Alas, twas not to be…I’d have to magic up some impulse-control.

Definitely splurge on some celebrations. 🙂

slug · 02/02/2022 16:27

Congratulations. For us it was the single most freeing thing we had evr done. From that point onwards, the threat of redundancy or losing our jobs ceased to be such a worry. It meant we could live on one income. It meant DH could quit the job that was destryoing his mental health and become a SAHD. It meant I could do another degree and change career direction.

Benjispruce5 · 02/02/2022 16:29

Our deeds were sent to us by our solicitor when the building society stopped storing them.

Toanewstart22 · 02/02/2022 16:29

What a shame to think that you think no one beyond your DH who’s be happy for you

I’d be over the moon if it was one of my close friends or family

ChicCroissant · 02/02/2022 16:30

Yay, congratulations! It's a fabulous feeling Flowers Hope you celebrate tonight.

Shufflebumnessie · 02/02/2022 16:34

Congratulations! That's a fantastic achievement.
Enjoy your fizz tonight whilst searching for the perfect holiday destination!

ILoveWillSmith · 02/02/2022 16:36

@Gonnagetgoing Grin I'll spend ages reading stuff like that, then go down a rabbit hole searching the net for more info. My DH doesn't get it either!

Staffy1 · 02/02/2022 16:42

You lucky thing! What a nice feeling that must be.

Blossomtoes · 02/02/2022 16:47

Brilliant. We were absolutely ecstatic when we paid ours off.

theworldsgonefeckingmad · 02/02/2022 16:48

Well done 🥳 so jealous you should definitely pop a bottle of something fizzy

vixeyann · 02/02/2022 16:49

Congrats - so envious! Enjoy that feeling :)

CurlyMango · 02/02/2022 16:52

Congratulations, it’s excellent. Well done to you both.

thefourgp · 02/02/2022 16:54

Congratulations- that’s something to celebrate. You should do something special with the money you would normally spend on the mortgage next month.

HelenaJustina · 02/02/2022 16:57

Congratulations! We’re currently overpaying on ours and it feels so good to see it ticking down.

mumda · 02/02/2022 16:57

Well done.

Put the same amount of money into savings account every month.

MyBottleOfRibena · 02/02/2022 17:04

Congratulations! We paid our off after 13 years late last year, I agree it’s a bit of an anticlimax 😂
