Can't tell anyone, paid the mortgage off today!

We don't really talk about finances to friends or family so it would seem a bit odd to tell anyone but I feel like I want to celebrate!
After years of overpaying on our mortgage, we paid it off today! It feels a bit of an anticlimax so far because it will take a little while to get the deeds etc (if we even get sent a copy now, maybe it's all digital). But it's a really big event!

Congratulations! That must feel awesome.
I'm looking forward to that day when it comes. Well done.

dipdye · 02/02/2022 14:46

Wowser! Good stuff

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 02/02/2022 14:46

Many congratulations.

FMSucks · 02/02/2022 14:47

Huge congrats OP, I'm not at all jealous, I swear!

FrownedUpon · 02/02/2022 14:47

Congratulations! I can’t wait until we’ve done the same. Enjoy your celebrations.

Levithian · 02/02/2022 14:48

Congratulations! I did this last year and I felt exactly the same. I'd left XH a few years earlier and am single parent who is self-employed... Both XH and my father said I'd always struggle financially, so this felt like a big deal. But I didn't feel like I could tell either of them I'd paid it off, so I got myself a nice bar of chocolate and sat there, looked around my lovely house and had a little happy cry.

burnoutbabe · 02/02/2022 14:48

I posted on Facebook to say I'd done it.

It didn't seem a shameful thing to do (plus I am an accountant so sort of expected)

BashfulClam · 02/02/2022 14:50

You should get some paperwork called a discharge of security. This is basically the bank releasing the property to you as they no longer have any security held on it.

Utterlybutterly8 · 02/02/2022 14:51

Congratulations OP, what a wonderful achievement! I hope you're planning on doing something special to celebrate.

Why don't you have the deeds to your property out of interest? We were given ours by the previous owner when we bought our place - is that not usual?

TheresSomebodyAtTheDoorNeil · 02/02/2022 14:51

We paid ours off a few years ago.... It was only a small mortgage compared to most but it was such a relief. I was so excited the bank sent me all the original deeds although it's usually done digitally these days. If you get them have a good read through them, I loved ours. The first person to buy our house was a single woman in 1870, which was pretty unheard of back then. I found myself giving her a little cheer 😂😂😂

ExtremelyDelighted · 02/02/2022 14:52

We got the deeds for ours (its Victorian). It was a bit of an anti climax, just a letter from the bank at the end and I diverted the savings into my pension, but it is nice knowing it's done.

TheDogsMother · 02/02/2022 14:59

No deeds here but I did set up the Land Registry.

irishfarmer · 02/02/2022 15:02

Congratulations. I'm sure you will notice it when the mortgage payments aren't going out every month.

Have an amazing trip this summer. Go somewhere far flung you have always wanted to visit.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 02/02/2022 15:05

Congratulations! Amazing achievement👏👏 Definitely celebrate!

Ryderr · 02/02/2022 15:05

Congratulations!
Big steps :D
My parents paid theirs off in early 00's. We had a big family party, BBQ & homemade hog roast, paddling pool, plenty of bevvies for everyone.
I was about 13 at the time and I can remember my parents being so happy and relieved!!

I hope you find a way for you guys to celebrate this big step in your lives :) 🖤

BlowDryRat · 02/02/2022 15:06

Congratulations! My neighbours (bought at the same time as me and exH) are going to be mortgage-free in a couple of years and I am Envy I agree there should be a fanfare!

It's not that it's shameful, it's more that we are much more comfortable financially than each of our families, and probably most of our friends too. Just wouldn't feel right.

I'm truly happy for you, what a wonderful feeling that must be and you are absolutely right to celebrate!!

Do you know when the deeds are coming to you, can you book a nice day out or little mini break at that time to celebrate??

Now you mention it, I definitely did see something along those lines when we bought. The older bits were hand written in beautiful copperplate handwriting. I wonder where they went?

Banks are missing a trick here, there SHOULD be a confetti gif when you pay it off, or paying money into savings.

It would encourage us.

That is so cute about the woman in 1870 wow!
NintendoStress · 02/02/2022 15:09

Congratulations! Can't wait for this to be me. How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? Presumably you'll be staying put and no intention of moving again?

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 02/02/2022 15:09

What a great thing to celebrate! Well done, enjoy your extra income x

QuiltedHippo · 02/02/2022 15:13

Well done you!

Eggshausted · 02/02/2022 15:15

There is no need to keep deeds at a solicitors anymore. Once upon a time they were the only proof you owned a property. Nowadays they are all stored digitally, and you can look them up online. When we paid off our mortgage 5 years ago we had to make a special request to have them sent to us, or they were just going to bin them, as they had been uploaded digitally.
Tip for you OP, set up a DD for the mortgage amount to go to a savings account when you get paid or you will subconsciously get used to having the extra account and just spend it. Also did the same when I gave up smoking. Put £50 a week in , it soon mounts up!
