Can't tell anyone, paid the mortgage off today!

We don't really talk about finances to friends or family so it would seem a bit odd to tell anyone but I feel like I want to celebrate!
After years of overpaying on our mortgage, we paid it off today! It feels a bit of an anticlimax so far because it will take a little while to get the deeds etc (if we even get sent a copy now, maybe it's all digital). But it's a really big event!

Congratulations!! It's such a feeling of relief, isn't it?

I wrote a blog post about it when we paid ours off. Grin Anyone who would have cared read about it there (or was told by someone who did). That was back when blogs were a bigger thing, of course. These days, I'd probably post about it on FB (and have people hating me for it)! Wink

Xenia · 02/02/2022 17:13

Well done. We did it on our third house in about 1996 (but then took on a massive mortgage and moved house!) and then I did it again when i was 52 and hopefully will do it again in a year or two.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 02/02/2022 17:13

Congratulations, the best day ever. For me it made me feel secure in my home.

coldfeetmama · 02/02/2022 17:13

Congrats , such a great feeling
I celebrated with a spa weekend when I paid mine
Had an extra treatment while I was there

Daenerys77 · 02/02/2022 17:19

Congratulations! I did the same thing not long ago, and it gives me deep satisfaction and reassurance to know that even if I give up work I will have a roof over my head which is paid for.

Elphame · 02/02/2022 17:26

@caddyshackGirl

It's all digital now so very unlikely you will get the Deeds

I was lucky to pay mine off a little while back. I live in a very old house and was absolutely gutted to hear my Deeds had been destroyed Sad

Yes I was too - my house is 250 years old and I'd have loved to have had the original deeds and seen the history. Now it's just a land registry entry.
godmum56 · 02/02/2022 17:28

Totally wonderful, I can still remember the feeling :) You can check online on the Land registry website to make sure that the mortgage company has removed their charge from the entry. I had to chase our bank to do this.

EngTech · 02/02/2022 17:29

Well done and I know that feeling 👍👍👍👍

When you get the original deeds, might be worth investing in a fire proof safe to store them in 👍

Mine is a small one behind the sofa 👍👍

SwishSwishBisch · 02/02/2022 17:32

Congratulations OP! It’s a wonderful feeling isn’t it, even if a little anticlimactic in terms of the process! I made my final payment as a lump sum at the bank - if it had been up to me there would have been champagne and party poppers but instead it was just me and a dour bank worker who was in a bit of a rush! Grin
Payed it off all by myself at 36. If I achieve nothing else in life, I’ll be proud of myself for that!

Knittingnanny2 · 02/02/2022 17:33

Well done, it’s an amazing feeling. I overpaid mine every single penny I could when I bought a teeny tiny house after divorce and adult children leaving home. I was able to give up full time teaching just before my 58 th birthday as I didn’t have a big mortgage payment any more and go on supply instead so it was a double celebration.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 02/02/2022 17:35

many congratulations, OP. It is a very BIG deal, well done!

Yes, screenshot - I've looked at that a fair few times. We sold and bought cheaper house, so paid off mortgage and bought cash. We chose to set up to invest that same amount we had paid in mortgage, and it is really beefing up our retirement funds. It has grown to 200k in 4 years! That's a chunk and what you never had, you never saw.

peterpaulpat · 02/02/2022 17:35

Congratulations, I remember paying off ours. Like you we had been overpaying bit by bit, little by little. Then had a small legacy out of the blue. Added to every spare £ we could raise without using Credit Cards to clear it.
Enjoy fixing the money pit, because it's your m-p!

1haudyerwheesht · 02/02/2022 17:38

Congratulations!

Mine got paid off when I got diagnosed with MS. It was nice to have a silver lining to a dark time. The feeling of financial security is bliss. Enjoy it.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 02/02/2022 17:40

Forgive me if this is inappropriate but would you mind sharing how old you are OP?

LadyLindaT · 02/02/2022 17:43

I must admit that I sent myself a "Congratulations" card when I finally did it. I had to fight tooth and claw to get my home back after being left homeless during the divorce from Hell, and then had to deal with a fiasco with Legal Aid trying to suddenly back-charge me for over 20 years interest, without warning, out of nowhere. Receiving those Deeds was hard earned! They are actually quite fascinating.

Akite · 02/02/2022 17:48

@User135792468

Congratulations! How many years early did you pay it off?
It was a 25 year mortgage and we've paid it off in 10 years. We overpaid the max every year (10%) and have paid a final lump sum in. We're extraordinarily fortunate to have been able to do this.

We had just got two puppies so DH went to the bank alone to do it. The house was in both our names but the final payment came off his retirement lump sum. The bloke at the bank said "Does your wife know you are doing this and does she agree to it?" DH said he thought I would be fine with it!
BlackboardMonitorVimes · 02/02/2022 17:56

Congratulations 👏🏼 that's amazing news! I would love to do the same one day.

...however I have paid off my student loan this week, that felt like a huge release too!

catwomando · 02/02/2022 17:56

Smashing. We are almost there. I've had a mortgage for 40years so can't wait!

Dreamstate · 02/02/2022 18:00

Congratulations i can only imagine the sense of financial freedom it gives!

One of my investments might enable me to pay mine off this yr...daring to dream it will and fingers crossed it happens

TiredMummyZZZ · 02/02/2022 18:12

Land registry do a free email service alerts on homes. Not even just the home you own. I've got my mothers house on mine too. Up to 10 houses per account. If any movement happens on the houses on your list, they email you. Be aware even if nothing happens every six months you get an email saying nothing has happened.
