Can't tell anyone, paid the mortgage off today!

We don't really talk about finances to friends or family so it would seem a bit odd to tell anyone but I feel like I want to celebrate!
After years of overpaying on our mortgage, we paid it off today! It feels a bit of an anticlimax so far because it will take a little while to get the deeds etc (if we even get sent a copy now, maybe it's all digital). But it's a really big event!

Congratulations, champaigne then dinner out is called for! You must celebrate the end of the marathon.

I did tell people when we paid off our old mortage (10 years early) and got very mixed responses, some good some negative/envious.

Then we decided to move and now we have a mortgage again but will be overpaying it to get out early again.

@Levithian

Congratulations! I did this last year and I felt exactly the same. I'd left XH a few years earlier and am single parent who is self-employed... Both XH and my father said I'd always struggle financially, so this felt like a big deal. But I didn't feel like I could tell either of them I'd paid it off, so I got myself a nice bar of chocolate and sat there, looked around my lovely house and had a little happy cry.
Oh that's lovely. Bloody well done! And well done to you too, OP.

We have 24 years left on ours and although we're making some overpayments I think we'll be waiting a while to join you in mortgage-free bliss!

Cissyandflora · 02/02/2022 15:18

Congratulations! Housing is just so difficult and worrying and expensive. That’s a huge weight gone I’m sure.

Bramshott · 02/02/2022 15:20

Well done OP! We paid ours off in the summer too. Unfortunately DD1 then started Uni in Sept and her rent (which we pay) is pretty much exactly what our mortgage payments were Shock! Still, at least we're not having to pay both I suppose...

gogohm · 02/02/2022 15:23

Congratulations. By November I will be in the same position, it's huge and be proud that you prioritised overpayments rather than stuff. (I know not everyone has that option but plenty do and choose not to overpay)

SeasonFinale · 02/02/2022 15:28

Congratulations. Enjoy!!

EatSleepRantRepeat · 02/02/2022 15:31

Yay, well done you, that's brilliant! Gives hope to the rest of us that it will be possible, one day Grin

UnaOfStormhold · 02/02/2022 15:34

Congratulations OP! This will hopefully be us in October, and I am sure it will be a great feeling - have done it before and it is satisfying if low key. Don't forget to do lots of surveys and savour ticking that you own your property outright!

OfstedOffred · 02/02/2022 15:36

I would definitely be breaking out the champagne whoop! And planning what to spend next months mortgage payment on Grin

1cloud · 02/02/2022 15:40

now time to go find a bigger house Grin

1cloud · 02/02/2022 15:41

I'm so far in the hole I cant see it ever being paid off

User135792468 · 02/02/2022 15:41

Congratulations! How many years early did you pay it off?

ThoseFestiveLights · 02/02/2022 15:43

We paid ours off two years ago and have still not told a soul!! Feels like it could land badly. But it’s a great feeling!

EmmaH2022 · 02/02/2022 15:43

Congratulations OP, that is brilliant!🍾🥳💐🥂

sandgrown · 02/02/2022 15:47

So jealous . My house would have been paid off in 2011 but had to remortgage due to a change in circs and will be paying for years . Go and celebrate. It must feel amazing .

WonderfulYou · 02/02/2022 15:47

That’s fantastic!!
Well done!!

FFSjustLTB · 02/02/2022 15:48

Woo hoo! Well done. It takes so long to get there and when it's finally paid off, I think you expect something big to happen Smile. I remember just getting a small envelope from the mortgage co with final statement and a blurry, faint copy of some paperwork. Still, it feels good!

MrsClatterbuck · 02/02/2022 15:49

Congratulations. It's a great feeling. We paid ours off during the mid nineties after 10 years. was only allowed to take it out over 10 years cos I was female and loan was through work we then proceeded to do some changes to the house and when that loan was paid off after 5 years took a home improvement loan for a loft conversion plus some other improvements. If I had pushed for the 25 year period that the men got we probably wouldn't have been able to do all that we did do.

powershowerforanhour · 02/02/2022 15:51

Congratulations, I'm years away from it but happy for you!

ILoveWillSmith · 02/02/2022 15:55

Congratulations! We paid ours off last year and we had paper copies of everything that was held on the house and the land. Right back to when the land was first registered, it's really interesting.

Gonnagetgoing · 02/02/2022 15:56

I probably won't do this for ages (and have a small mortgage anyway) but recall when my single parent mum did this at about 40. She was rightly so, really proud of herself. No more panicking about mortgage payments. She had a significant inheritance at the same time but didn't use much of that on the mortgage.

She let rooms when we were kids and there was a small self contained flat upstairs in family home. Any extra money she got - e.g. from earnings as a book author went straight to paying off mortgage.

The only help her very wealthy DM offered her was paying for electricity meters when she was younger and forced to let rooms or would lose the house after she divorced DF

Christinatherabbit · 02/02/2022 15:57

Amazing 🍾 congratulations. Enjoy your fizz and planning your holiday!

Gonnagetgoing · 02/02/2022 15:57

Oh and congratulations - celebrate with meal out/champagne whatever!

Twospaniels · 02/02/2022 15:58

Congratulations 🥳

You may not get any deeds as it’s all digital now. However if you have an old property there may be some old stuff somewhere that will be sent to you. It’s not necessary to keep these safe as they have been over ridden by the new digital format, but they are nice to keep if your house is older.

Gonnagetgoing · 02/02/2022 16:00

@ILoveWillSmith

@ILoveWillSmith - my ex boss was a solicitor and once we had a rare conveyance when land was first registered which went back to turn of century (early 1900s) - he was so excited about the document and spent ages poring over it and marvelling about it's age. reminded me of Ebenezer Scrooge and Dickensian times...

I couldn't get the excitement Grin!
