Try UK Transcription

I’ve worked for them before and they were excellent.

Ooh I like that, thanks @applejane! I like their application form questions too and 72p per minute is very good too! What's the quality of the audio like, generally?

Southerngal5 · 07/02/2022 10:21

I'm a sahm currently trying to do surveys, would love to make some extra cash. Do you know if any of the above links are applicable to the Republic of ireland?

AppleJane · 07/02/2022 12:27

@PorpoiseWithPurpose I think @8dpwoah meant to ask you about that transcription company you've used Smile although I'd be interested in the answers too!

8dpwoah · 07/02/2022 13:41

Oh bigger, yes I did @applejane doesn't say much for my attention to detail does it 😂

PositiveHope · 07/02/2022 14:09

Hi I'm new here can I ask what you mean by earning from potatoes crisps? Xx

Redcrayons · 07/02/2022 14:38

Potatoes is a jokey name for a company called Crisp Thinking. Link is in the opening post.

AppleJane · 07/02/2022 15:18

@8dpwoah

Oh bigger, yes I did *@applejane* doesn't say much for my attention to detail does it 😂

You're cracking me up. You even spelt bugger wrong Grin I'm not sure I'm cut out for this attention to detail business neither!

8dpwoah · 07/02/2022 16:27

😂 maybe I should just retire (very) early...

I had a go at the typing speed site linked from UK translation and it turns out I can't type quickly enough anyway, I can see why they ask for you to do it but audio typing is a bit different to copying what's already on a screen, that's my defence and I'm sticking to it...

AppleJane · 07/02/2022 17:27

Totally agree @8dpwoah (about the typing speed, not the retirement 😂)

I mean, if you're paid by the audio hour and given a fair turnaround deadline then it's only your own time you're wasting typing slow! Maybe it's to put people off. Not sure I dare apply now. How about you go first?! 😂

8dpwoah · 07/02/2022 17:46

I have my own transcription technique anyway, probably quite unorthodox:

  1. Listen and type out what's said as fast as can while kids are asleep. Lots of errors but obviously typos/letters missing, words and meaning still accurate.

  2. Go back and correct obvious typos, errors etc and get ready to put the timestamps in, I can do this in bits and bobs when the kids are awake and relaxed.

  3. Settle down to listen in again (kids asleep) and check all my corrections and that what I've typed is fully accurate. Add in time stamps as I go along (WWW style is generally every half a page).

  4. Another skim read then upload and relax!

AppleJane · 07/02/2022 20:05

@8dpwoah that's a good routine 👍 I find it really hard to be disciplined not to stop every time I see I've made a mistake to correct it when I know it's much quicker your way of picking them up second time around!

AdaShelby · 07/02/2022 21:33

Anyone got anything in their tool yet? 🧸🦴🪁🪀 (random junk Grin)

bookgirl1982 · 07/02/2022 21:48

Nothing so far here!

YonderTweek · 07/02/2022 21:57

I have nothing. Sad I'm convinced they have taken me off their lists now. Boo! Well at least not buying more crap will help me de-clutter the house? Haha.

TheHumanFund · 07/02/2022 22:15

Nothing for me either

BecauseOfIndia · 08/02/2022 07:52

Question for the long term Potato peelers - do they over recruit on the shifts in the expectation that most will leave, as they do with the live system? I started shifts over a year ago but found initially that I couldn't get any on the Friday release so I gave up trying. About 3 months ago I tried again and found I easily picked up a weeks worth, and have been doing so ever since, making it my main source of income. Now, suddenly in the last 2 weeks I can't get any again and when the app pings I jump for it, but it's already taken. What's going on? Is this something that happens every few months?

Yes, this is exactly what happens. They recruit every few months and this has been happening with increasing frequency over the past year.

It has angered a lot of long term potato peelers as their work (particularly last year) significantly dried up.

Occasionally you get a brave person on Slack speaking out about it saying, “there should be a better content / workers ratio.” These comments are often ignored, or met with sarcasm by a shift manager (to be fair, I don’t think it’s them who decide how many people are hired).

You can see on slack the number of RAs at any given time. The worst I’ve seen it is close to 800 and it was AWFUL. The queues dried up to single figures for months.

@8dpwoah @AppleJane

You have to be able to type fast to make it worth while. I would invest in a foot pedal and time stamp software if I were you.

The quality of Audio is brilliant. Lots of uni, research, author notes, case study notes. Some salacious interviews with celebs! All UK based. You have to sign an NDA.

I honestly loved working there. I had to stop when I went back to work full time and they booted me off for inactivity.

Pay is far better than WWW and all the rest of the transcription services out there.

PS- you can preview audio files before accepting them. So it’s entirely your choice what files you accept. The deadlines are reasonable, too.

Work that requires a same day turnaround gets bonus pay

You're lucky you got onto shifts. I have worked for them for 2 years and have never been offered them

Same here. I get the idea, though obviously don’t know for sure, that they moved a lot of the big customers to the shifts which is why the main board is so quiet now. I only make any decent money on it when the tool breaks and it gets backed up for an hour or so.

I really enjoyed it when I first started and it definitely got me out of a financial hole, but I’m not sure how much longer I’ll carry on with it.
