Hi I am new to Mumsnet, I saw the great review in The Sunday Times, and simply had to look! I was just wondering if there are any stay at home Mums in Norfolk? I live in King's Lynn and am at home with my 17 month old son Jack. Jack and I try to get out as often as money permits, with only Richard (hubby) working, not always possible, although I do my little bit with Avon!!
Please contact me and maybe we can organise days out and meets etc.........

Hi, I went to Homestart on Tuesday just gone. I never realised that this isn't a toddler group as such, the women there told me that it is for people with troubles at home! However, they were all very nice, but found the children a bit disruptive and badly behaved......

zebra · 17/06/2004 16:25

I'm in Norwich, but moving to North Walsham end of July (we hope). If you have a car, there seems to be a decent-size South & East Norfolk contingent.

louee · 17/06/2004 18:03

hey that would be good to meet up and meet some mumsnet folk!!!!keep posting and we can all get to know each other ,at least you know about a few of us anyway!!!!!lol....

moverandshaker · 17/06/2004 19:10

hi there - good to hear from you. can i just briefly crash this thread also and ask about schools in norwich from you girls as i really don't know the area yet. our house is just off upton road which is off unthank road. we are in the catchment area for colman road first school. but if i'm honest i think i prefer avenue first school which we can get a place in. any insider gossip/ info on these schools???? thanks in advance

Bronze · 17/06/2004 20:11

I too may well be joining you lot too. We were posed to be moving to Bungay but it fell through (yeah I know thats Suffolk) and when we can sort out the sale of our house we're looking further into the north. My inlaws live in reepham. I'm currently in suffolk and desperate to move

aliensinmygarden · 18/06/2004 01:39

Hello, hello,
Well I suppose I am technically Suffolk too although I go to college in Norfolk so do I count? Why are you desperate to move t'other side of the border Bronze?? I'd like to be nearer Norwich really as the shops here are pants. Yes I have transport Louee...

Bronze · 18/06/2004 18:39

I'm desperate to move as I'm pg and we couldnt fit another baby in this house let alone all its stuff (we've been on themarket a year). the area where we live is quite expensive as people are moving out of London so we want to move north a bit plus it would be nice to be nearer some people I know, I might even get some time off then.

Mover&Shaker: if you want gossip about Norwich primary schools, I'm your gal!
Avenues 1st school is lovely and usually badly under-subscribed for reception class (maybe all classes). Both Avenues middle school and Colman middle school are badly over-subscribed, though. I vastly prefer Colman middle school -- better facilities, smaller class sizes, nicer head. The plan is to merge the first and middle schools where possible (so AVenues 1st & middle will become one, and similarly for Colman 1st/middle), and I would imagine the middle school heads will take over for the merged new schools.

I can say a lot more, if you like. I didn't actually visit Colman 1st school, but I liked the children from there I met (using the Colman middle school pool). Colman schools have a very mixed catchment (very rich and relatively poor families), and I think their attitude (middle school level, I mean) is better for it. Aimed at children as individuals... compared to Avenues, which is competitive and more results oriented by all accounts.

moverandshaker · 19/06/2004 12:30

thanks zebra - you certainly do seem to be the girl in the know. do you live around there then?

in your experience do most children move from the same first to the same middle school?? i actually didn't really like the head from colman first school who is new - he didn't seem to have a very good rapport with the teachers. On the other hand I got a really good feel for the head at avenues first. having said that i didn't visit the middle schools - maybe i should have.

what you say about the social mix is really appealling though as i am moving from london and may get a bit of a shock to my system! how feasible would it be to move from avenue first to colman road middle (especially as i am actually in catchment for colman road). i don't think they are going to have merged in time for this not to be an issue.

zebra · 21/06/2004 01:18

Hi M&S: yes, am in the area. On Lincoln St. We meant to live in Norwich which is why I looked around schools last autumn, but are moving away after all!
Anyway, AFAIK answers...

  1. I would think most kids at the first school will go the middle school next door, which means that the friends your child makes will mostly be going to the middle school associated with the 1st school. I just know that would be a problem for my DS if he didn't go with most of his friends.
  2. I didn't meet the head at Colman 1st school, so fair enough, you know more than me, there! I focused on middle schools because they're much harder to get into, and I didn't want to move house again if possible. Most of my son's playgroup (Jessop Rd.) are going to Colman 1st school, and their parents seem quite happy about it.
  3. I would think there would be no problem moving from Avenues 1st school (undersubscribed, houses in the area cost too much for young families, I reckon!) to Colman middle school (which you'd clearly be in the catchment for).
  4. Even post merger it's not clear if transfer from the 1st to middle school years will be automatic & guaranteed! Maybe not, you see..... HTH.
