Scottish Picnic: Summer 2006

Picking up on Gomez' suggestion, maybe it would be nice to organise a Scottish Picnic somewhere.

Not sure about where or when - maybe McMudda, who lives near Loch Lomond or some of the Stirling/Perth people could suggest somewhere.

Do we want it during the school holidays - when people might be away on holiday, or a weekend in June, before the holidays start?

Would also suggest that we have it somewhere where an "inside" version is also an option, given the vagaries of the Scottish weather!

Do we want it with partners or not? If it is picnic and the little ones would be running around, it might be useful to have extra pairs of hands! Grin

I'm off the first 2 weeks in June but am working on 3rd and away from the 16th till the 19th. For 2 weekends after that, I'm not working. Happy to go where-ever.

prettybird · 28/04/2006 15:33

... come to think of it, first two weekends in June are no-gos for me - first weekend my aunt is coming over from SOuth Africa and second weekend (10th/11th) we are taking ds down to London for a surprise. (He's obessed with Dr Who and is depsrate to see Big Ben and the London Eye in real life.) :)

Hiya I am interested too.

I am off work w/c 12th june for the week

Aimsmum · 28/04/2006 16:34

I would be up for it, should be good, as long as the weather is!! Grin

I don't care either way if partners are included, not really having one!! Wink

I can't do 11th june (edinburgh marathon), 24th June(concert in loch ness) and i will be away on holiday for 2 seperate week during the school holidays, but no sure which yet.....perhaps the first week and fair week!

Apart for that, I'm fine Grin

sweetkitty · 28/04/2006 16:46

I would be up for it too don't have any school age children so anytime is fine for me really. I think I will only bring one of them with me though!

gomez · 30/04/2006 18:53

Helloo - sounds a grand plan!

Couple of ideas:

Stirling Uni Grounds - nice spot with the back-up of the McRobert Centre if weather not tip-top.

Callander Park, Falkirk - never been but supposed to be nice. No idea how close to train station thou'.

Botanic Gardens - either Edinburgh or Glasgow I suppose?

Dalkeith Country Park is quite nice and perhaps a bit handier for those coming up from the Borders?

Anyway we can come whenever/where ever pretty much.

Toodle-pip

Sorry Prettybird I didn't answer your questions

Partners - DH would I feel rather sit in a cold bath and chew tinfoil! He wouldn't admit that thou'and would trot along happily if asked!

Dates - I would think June would be easier before holidays start.

prettybird · 01/05/2006 09:04

What's Stirling Uni like to get to on public trnasport? Just thinking for thos ewho don't necessarily have cars? Like the sound of it because of the back up of the MCrobert Centre.

It must be nearly 25 years since I was last at Sitrling Uni! Blush

Aimsmum, are you running the Edinburgh Marathon?! Also, if you are at a concert in Loch Ness on 24th, would you be back for a picnin on the 25th?

Hey! I'm reasonably flexible about dates, locations etc - suggestion of Stirling Uni sounds good, McRobert is great as a back up been there with Ja9 and Tassis and it's really nice and child friendly. Not really familiar with other locations so can't comment.

mcmudda · 01/05/2006 21:40

I'm up for this!

Although 3/4 Saturdays in June are already booked up for me.

DD is one (Shock) on the 12th so we're having a family do the Saturday before. Then we have friends staying, then we're visiting friends in Edinburgh. Get me! Quite the social buterfly.

The Botanics in Glasgow aren't open atm, but possibly v soon?

But Stirling is probably best to give as many people as possible a chance to come.

purplethistle · 01/05/2006 21:42

Hi, I'm interested too. Never been to a meet up before. Anytime is good! Smile
If it's at stirling Uni, there's a bus that takes you straight there I believe and the bus station right next to train station.

Aimsmum · 02/05/2006 10:09

The thought of me running in the Edinburgh Marathon has made me snigger!!Grin

No my friend is, so we are going along to cheer him on!

I wouldn't be back on the Sunday, but if this is the day that suits everyone else best, just go ahead Smile

Eulalia · 02/05/2006 10:24

Just spotted this - anywhere is OK for me - probably further north though, ie Perth/Stirling as I am near Aberdeen but prepared to travel.

prettybird · 02/05/2006 11:24

Eulalia - we might actually get to meet you! Shock:)

Stirling Uni is looking like the best option - right in the middle of the country.

Not sure about dates yet, although of course, we are never going to get a date which suits everyone. What about 1/2 July?

Aimsmum - somehow I didn't think of you as a marathon runner, hence my suprise! Wink

gomez · 02/05/2006 14:00

Hello All - Uni has a fairly good bus service from Stirling. Or you can get the train to BoFA and walk along, maybe about 20 mins (if you don't have a grumbling toddler with you of course.)

First weekend in July okay for me - Saturday or Sunday? What time?

Quite looking forward to this now Smile.

Twiga · 02/05/2006 16:32

Eulalia, hi! Would be great if you made it, could see you guys with out trailing all the way home. Speaking of which due up again soon, will let you know dates once I'm organised. Did my email come through ok?

Eulalia · 02/05/2006 17:00

Gosh am I really that famous [flattered emotiocn]

Hi Twiga. Yes got your emails fine. Will reply soon promise! And would be lovely to see you again.

mawbroon · 02/05/2006 17:30

I'll try to come to this one if I can. I'm free most weekends. Smile

prettybird · 02/05/2006 17:42

Eulalia - yours were the first posts I remember reading on Mumsnet , way back in about about July/August 2001. They were about breast feeding and I remember being really impressed by how knowledgable you were! :)

Hi girls, sorry to gatecrash but thought you might like a bit of info. Stirling Uni graduations take place on Thurs 29th and Friday 30th June with a huge graduation ball held on campus on the night of 30th.
Although most of celebrations/aftermath will be over by lunchtime on the Saturday the car parks might still be a bit full. Sunday 2nd might be a better bet but public transport not as good.

Eulalia · 03/05/2006 10:07

prettybird - so you are an older timer as well? I think I'd only been on since about June of 01. I wonder how many of us there are around that have been on this long? Yes would be interesting to see 'real' people. I am rather shy in RL though.

schneebly · 03/05/2006 10:13

I might come too! Stirling good for me. Smile

prettybird · 03/05/2006 10:15

West3 - thanks for that! Looks like SUnday would be a better bet, if we go for that weekend.

Eulalia - my old name was Jan Z, but I changed it when there were some issues caused by a link I did to a family member's web site (done with the best of intentions - to promote his business).

Hi everyone! I unfortunately won't be able to make it on the 2nd of July, a friend and I are taking our wee ones to see the Fimbles Live in Edinburgh on that day Grin
Would depend on what time it was at though, show doesn't start till 4.30pm.

Eulalia · 04/05/2006 10:51

Oh yes I know you now prettybird :)
