Summer Low Carb Mini Bootcamp - week 2

Morning and welcome to week 2

I'll link to the spreadsheet in a comment below

Fingers crossed everyone's had a great week weight wise and that week 2 brings a break from the rain for most of us!

Please remember when you get on the scales this morning/tomorrow morning, that some people lose weight much quicker than others.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, chances are that you will lose it quicker than if you are closer to your target. Some people will lose a shed load in week one, but then nothing in week two - whereas others will lose more modestly, but consistently, week after week. The only thing that matters is what is happening to you.

If you haven't lost much, please don't be disappointed. Make sure that you are genuinely following the rules - are you drinking enough water? Are you eating high fat? That one glass or wine, or that small piece of cake - they all add up.

And even if you have genuinely followed the rules - if you haven't seen the scales move by much - have you measured?

We are all different, and rates of loss will be different too. Just think about the food that you have been eating, and consider how this WOE compares with low calorie or low fat diets.

Changing to a low carb way of eating as compared to a low fat or low calorie diet is not an easy transition, and it is to be expected that there will be snags along the way. Hopefully the Bootcamp threads will give you the help and guidance that you need - and I hope that when you get on the scales next, your hard work will be rewarded!

(thank you for the motivational words @biwi Smile )

@Rayna37 I am doing boot camp lite.
I have made a ‘vegan keto porridge’ a few times with coconut flour, ground almonds, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, a bit of desiccated coconut, water, cinnamon and coconut or soya milk. I added a few blueberries too. It reminded me of semolina that we had as kids.
It’s really filling and makes a change from tofu scramble which I have most days. I made double the amount and had it a few days later too. It might be higher in calories but it’s super nutritious!

Rayna37 · 13/08/2021 12:45

Wildly overeaten out for lunch! Had planned Leon but decided to try Mowgli as it's new here. Had 3 dishes- paneer, house chicken curry and the tangled cabbage in place of rice. If was all delicious. Lower carb but I imagine plenty of hidden carbs in the sauces.

@pinknsparkly I always end up packing for my baby with nothing for me to eat Blush you did well not to eat there though!

I've just been clothes shopping for the first time since before I was pregnant (must be at least a year and a half) and bought some clothes for work starting Monday. Bought a couple of aspirational dresses too that almost fit but not quite! I'll leave the bulk of new clothes buying until I reach my goal though.

B - nuts Greek yoghurt
L - some deli chicken from m&s (yum)
D - no clue yet - whatever meat needs to be eaten in the fridge!!

recreationalcalpol · 13/08/2021 13:19

Hello boot camp! I had no time for breakfast this morning - the baby slept in until 8am and then my cleaner came at 8:45 and I didn’t really want to get in her way by cooking eggs or anything. So by lunchtime I was absolutely ravenous and ate the contents of my fridge Blush all low carb though.

B: nada
L: three bacon rashers, 2 scrambled eggs, 4 cherry tomatoes, a cheese string, berries and nuts, 85% chocolate bar (FOR SHAME)
D: leftover chicken coconut curry with cauliflower rice

pinknsparkly · 13/08/2021 15:11

Thanks @BlueLilyLilyBlue - I was pretty pleased with myself too!

And congrats on the shopping. I've also not been clothes shopping in about 2 years (pre pregnancy) and desperately need new clothes but can't face the thought of clothes shopping in my current squishy state! I'm looking forward to a big clothes shop soon though!

pinknsparkly · 13/08/2021 15:18

Today I am having an obscenely hungry day. Am I doing something wrong to be hungry all day this far into boot camp?

I had coffee with a good amount of cream for breakfast, cherry tomatoes and cheese as a morning snack/second breakfast, feta, avocado and mayonnaise salad for lunch. I'd eaten it all by 11.45 and had to have some fresh coconut for a mid afternoon snack (it was the best option I could find in a very limited store, is coconut allowed or does it count as a nut?)

Bryonyshcmyony · 13/08/2021 16:25

On a long long car journey - dh and I are going away for the weekend

Had nothing to eat until 3 wjen we stopped at an m and S food and I bought a pot of prawns and mayo dip.
Out to a pub tonight so possibly won't stay on plan. I won't report back!!

venusandmars · 13/08/2021 17:19

@BlueLilyLilyBlue ^B - nuts Greek yoghurt
L - some deli chicken from m&s (yum)
D - no clue yet - whatever meat needs to be eaten in the fridge!!^ plus some veg, I presume Wink

@pinknsparkly some people find that too much dairy (not counting butter) can trigger an insulin response - that would make you feel hungry. You had cream for breakfast, a cheese snack and feta with your lunch. Are you vegetarian or could you have meat / eggs mashed with butter / mayo earlier in the day? or avocado with olive oil and tomato for breakfast? or fresh coconut for your morning snack? I find that if I have higher fat and protein earlier on then I don't feel hungry later.

I think coconut is about 3.5g carb per 100g which seems OK but a portion has about 340 calories. I know we don't count cals but you wouldn't want to eat too much of it...

venusandmars · 13/08/2021 17:26

Have a good weekend @Bryonyshcmyony. You might be surprised by some of the eating out options and may be able to stay closer to plan than expected...

Stayed overnight in hotel following a lovely wedding (daughter of family friends). Then took lunch to frail PILs. Tonight dh returns from almost 2 weeks sailing - he wants real meat!
B - eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomato
L - poached salmon, salad, mayonnaise (buttered potatoes for PILs) then chocolate cake, strawberries, cream - without chocolate pud for me
D - steak, potatoes (for dh), green beans, broccoli, cabbage with lots of butter.

It's all low carb, but I'm only 2 meals in and don't feel any need for dinner - will have a small portion. I've got 2 weeks before going on holiday and I'm looking forward to 16:8 intermittent fasting (which I'll probably continue for most of the holiday).

BestIsWest · 13/08/2021 17:32

Was looking forward to a barbecue with family I hadn’t seen in over a year this evening but got home to find (adult) DS quite poorly - possibly a hangover as he was out last night but it seems a bit more than that to me. I’ve packed him off to bed, phoned his boss as he was due to work and I’ll get him to test later. I really don’t want to leave him alone (possibly overkill but still). I had to tell DM I couldn’t give her a lift to the barbecue only to get a full on melt down from her.
I’d only provisionally offered her a lift anyway as DH had a hospital appointment this afternoon so wasn’t 100% sure we could make it anyway. Apparently I’d promised to take her and what was she supposed to do now. I put the phone down.

No idea what to have for tea now.

Kerplunkk · 13/08/2021 17:48

Skipped breakfast, just had a cup of tea as thr workmen were here & didn’t have time to cook.
L - scrambled eggs, avocado, spinach & mushrooms.
D - Salmon & broccoli.
Snacks - babybel - I feel like cheese will be my downfall, I love it, especially Philadelphia!

pinknsparkly · 13/08/2021 17:49

Thanks @venusandmars. No, I'm not veggie, just a bit of a cheese addict Grin I have about 20 eggs in the fridge that I meant to batch hard boil during the week and kept forgetting so I'll make sure I have a load on hand for next week. I'll try those breakfast options. I find dinners fairly easy to plan, but do rely quite heavily on cheese for snacks and lunches. While any weightless would definitely be welcome (and I do need to lose some), my main reason for joining this bootcamp was to get into low carb eating long term for blood sugar control! I've got my first annual hb1Ac test in August after my gestational diabetes pregnancy and that's what gave me the kick up the arse to start doing something about it. I've tested my blood sugar a few times in the past year and while my fasting level is always fine (and was during pregnancy), my after meal readings can be quite high

venusandmars · 13/08/2021 17:55

Change of plan for tonight, dh had a big lunch, so dinner will be veg soup. Steak will be good for tomorrow.

BlueLilyLilyBlue · 13/08/2021 18:01

@venusandmars of course Grin again whatever is in the fridge! One of my colleagues does keto but he is zero carb and doesn't eat any veg 😱 so his diet is mostly cheese and meat. I just do not think that is healthy, but each to their own.

@pinknsparkly I thought the same about clothes shopping but it actually made me feel a bit more motivated!

HarrietDVane · 13/08/2021 18:05

Hello everyone.
B - coffee
L - scrambled eggs on a bed of spinach
D - Philly cheese steak stuffed peppers with green salad

I've also had 2 squares of no-added-sugar plain chocolate to kill a craving.

PastramiNoRye · 13/08/2021 18:33

Driving on holiday today so:

B: scrambled eggs, avocado, mushrooms

L: bit disastrous due to heavy traffic and three hungry kids. The place we managed to stop in only had a chippy with limited options ie nothing non-battered. Picked the batter off some fish and managed to avoid the chips so a win for the self-control.

Snack: ham with Mayo as I was starving!

Dinner: beef, mushroom and shallot casserole with broccoli

Dellabob123 · 13/08/2021 19:51

Odd day here in Devon - weather weird!
B - boiled egg with butter
L- steak salad - but not enough salad as ran out
D - big burger with cheese and ended up having 2 extra sausages as we had to get disposable bbqs which had the same heat as a hairdryer and didn’t cook my veg. So basically meat and cheese.

I’m guessing I’ve put on a few pounds but I have tried extremely hard whilst away. Am not expecting miracles but I know I’ll be back on track in 2 days time.

It will be interesting posting the weight changes !!

StuntNun · 13/08/2021 20:08

I tried a new meal tonight: Philly cheesesteak on a Seriously Low Carb roll. It's thinly-sliced ribeye steak fried up with onions, mushrooms and peppers then with cheese melted over.

MsAwesomeDragon · 13/08/2021 20:27

I've been a bit thwarted by a severe lack of veg in my house today (shopping is being delivered tomorrow). Not helped by being in the middle of a bathroom refit, so going to the toilet is limited during the day while the workmen are here, so I'm a bit scared of drinking enough as it makes me pee.
B: Greek yogurt
L: breakfast muffins with pepper and mushrooms
D: lemon and herb chicken and roast peppers, mushrooms and courgette (leftovers from yesterday, still quite good)

I need to get a few more good recipes under my belt as all my normal "day before the shopping arrives" dinners involve pasta/rice/freezer food. Has anyone got a good recipe for low carb lasagne? Or enchiladas?

Onelittlepiglet · 14/08/2021 08:08

Hello all

Have had a good few days keeping on track.

Yesterday was:
B - a creamy coffee
L - roasted spinach, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, feta and an egg
D - sea bass fillets in a lemon cream sauce (homemade) with roasted fennel, broccoli and a couple of berry tomatoes. Delicious!

Today will be
B - Greek yoghurt, teaspoon on double cream and three raspberries
L - going out so not sure but maybe chicken or halloumi salad
D - roasted chicken breast with a huge pile of green veg.

FusionChefGeoff · 14/08/2021 10:02

Wow this is such a good reset reading how well everyone is doing and your lovely meals.

@MsAwesomeDragon I find courgettes and sweetheart cabbage last aaaaaaages if kept in the fridge - as does Romaine or little gem lettuce as long as bag isn't opened - so I've usually got a few of those kicking around. Then a freezer / fridge pasta and sauce with FLGV or tex mex stuff with little gem instead of wraps.

Frozen peppers are good to add to basic pasta sauces. Sour cream also lasts very well to make a quick store cupboard sauce.

Disastrous last few food days of the holiday (actual holiday was ace!) - no excuse apart from my own greed.

I hope you don't mind me sharing this - but it's the sort of thing I really value about these threads. But as a short aside I was sad to see a 'deprivation' / 'binge' mentality appear. Despite what I say / feel when eating well on this woe, subconsciously I have obviously marked it as 'deprivation' so when I went off plan I overate ridiculous amounts of awful food.

I would LOVE to be one of these people who can just have a few chips / chocolate / crisps but once I start some weird compulsion kicks in and I Hoover up everything (and more) in sight instead. Sigh.

Anyway - drove back late last night so I'm starting my BC properly today!! I did brave the scales - it was bad - but I'm positive and confident about losing it quickly and whilst eating delicious food. Expecting to be pretty hungry today and don't know if carb flu likely to be an issue after a week or not??

Desperately need to shop and meal plan but a quick peek outside suggests my garden veggies might just do me a meal!!

venusandmars · 14/08/2021 10:13

@FusionChefGeoff I find that if I've been fat adapted, then a week off doesn't cause a recurrence of carb flu. Fingers crossed for you, but also make sure you have whatever remedies usually help, on hand - electrolyte tablets, salt and lemon juice in water, foods with lots of magnesium and potassium...

I'm doing 16/8 fasting now so no breakfast.
Early lunch - poached salmon, mayonnaise, avocado, salad
D - steak with cream and mushroom sauce, and veg in butter

ZiggZagg · 14/08/2021 12:18

Happy Saturday everyone!!

Have been so busy at work so have just read but not updated!

Apart from one hour where I ate all the biscuits, this week has been really good! I did an inadvertent fast yesterday as travelled out of city and left my packed lunch (SLCR with cheese and onion sandwich filler) on the kitchen counter, so I drank all the water and the coffee.

Fasting again today with beanless chilli and cauliflower rice for dinner when I get home from my busy day! Carrying around 2 boiled eggs just in case!

Have a fab day everyone!

ZiggZagg · 14/08/2021 12:19

I ate the sandwich for dinner last night and it really filled me Smile

TidyDancer · 14/08/2021 12:22

Hi all. I weighed in early (impatient) and have reached an 11lb loss since the start. I'm prepared for a stall for the next couple of weeks and I'm completely aware it's only as much as 11lbs because I have a lot to lose but I'm still pleased to see it going in the right direction!

Going to start trying to be a bit more adventurous with my food next week as I've not had much time so stuck to easily prepared stuff so far!
