Summer Low Carb Mini Bootcamp - week 2

Oneborneverydecade · 09/08/2021 07:46

Morning and welcome to week 2

I'll link to the spreadsheet in a comment below

Fingers crossed everyone's had a great week weight wise and that week 2 brings a break from the rain for most of us!

Please remember when you get on the scales this morning/tomorrow morning, that some people lose weight much quicker than others.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, chances are that you will lose it quicker than if you are closer to your target. Some people will lose a shed load in week one, but then nothing in week two - whereas others will lose more modestly, but consistently, week after week. The only thing that matters is what is happening to you.

If you haven't lost much, please don't be disappointed. Make sure that you are genuinely following the rules - are you drinking enough water? Are you eating high fat? That one glass or wine, or that small piece of cake - they all add up.

And even if you have genuinely followed the rules - if you haven't seen the scales move by much - have you measured?

We are all different, and rates of loss will be different too. Just think about the food that you have been eating, and consider how this WOE compares with low calorie or low fat diets.

Changing to a low carb way of eating as compared to a low fat or low calorie diet is not an easy transition, and it is to be expected that there will be snags along the way. Hopefully the Bootcamp threads will give you the help and guidance that you need - and I hope that when you get on the scales next, your hard work will be rewarded!

(thank you for the motivational words @biwi Smile )

Very pleased with the first week loss of 7lb. Just need to not expect this again!

Me doing this has also, as a side effect, helped my hubby's blood sugars... he's jumping in on most of my meals!

bugcat · 09/08/2021 09:52

4lb off this week 🎉 but I have really struggled. I have loads to loose, over 100lbs and it seems so unreachable. Well done all losers.

I have 25lbs to lose (have lost 12) and would be very happy with a pound off a week - same proportion! You are doing great
ditavonteesed · 09/08/2021 10:41

I'm 1.5 down which I'm really pleased with.
Well done everyone. And remember even little losses add up quickly, the t8me will pass anyway so you may as well be achieving something no matter how long it takes.

prettybird · 09/08/2021 10:45

@bugcat - on the last thread I posted this, which might help you if you're seeing your goal as too daunting:

Or another way of looking at it (as one Boot Camper's boss had once pointed out to her - I always forget who it was Blush ) is that even if it [whatever your goal is] is going to take a long time, in a year's [insert time period of your choice] time, the time will have passed anyway, so why not be a little further along the path that you want

Another way of dealing with it is to break it down into a series of mini targets - either on the scales (the next half stone, the next zero or five in the kgs) or in measurements or in an item of clothing that you want to get into or the next notch in a belt. Or a combination of all of them Grin

prettybird · 09/08/2021 10:50

I lost 3 stone in the first 6 months of Boot Camp (the first time I committed to it properly Wink): I'd got to 14st 13lb so had probably got to over 15st but didn't weigh myself at my "worst" Blush

Since then I've occasionally gone up a bit and have also got down to nearly 11st but have generally fluctuated between 11.5st and 12.5st - with each time the fluctuations being at a lower "base". I'm hoping by Christmas to get under 10st 10lb, which for me would be into a normal BMI Smile

bugcat · 09/08/2021 11:15

@prettybird makes sense 😀 i think my 1st goal will be under 300lb Blush and go from there.

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 09/08/2021 11:15

Well done everyone on your losses. I fell off the wagon last night. Felt nauseous all day and caved in to carbs to see if it helped. It did but now I have awful stomach cramps. Really cross with myself! I'm making a nice slow cooked roast gammon dinner in cider gravy so going to enjoy that tonight and start again tomorrow.

You are all doing amazing! Smile

Nobloat21 · 09/08/2021 11:20

@Jollyholibobs ahh thanks for the support! It's certainly a new world to me. My diet is so carb reliant I know I'm living on rubbish. I've also developed a pepsi max addiction, but last week really enjoyed sparkling water instead. Pepsi max is definitely a gateway drug Grin.

recreationalcalpol · 09/08/2021 11:26

Posted this on the old thread like a rookie Blush :

Lost 0.5lb this week. All good. I’m trying to shift my last stone now, so I guess it’s going to be slower going than when I had 3 stone to lose!

Daveggie1 · 09/08/2021 11:27

@Nobloat21 I’m vegan and found watching some vegan keto YouTube videos helpful for ideas. I’m doing boot camp lite as it would be virtually impossible not to include nuts etc.
This morning I had unsweetened soya yogurt with a dribble of soya cream mixed in to up the fat content with a few berries, nuts, seeds.
Other breakfasts have been tofu scramble with mushrooms cooked in butter/ tinned tomatoes and vegan keto porridge with a few berries and nuts.
Lunches have been salads with vegan mayo, olive oil and a bit of salt with quorn ham and a bit of violite cheese, stir fries with tofu, broccoli soup made with soya cream.
Teas have been vegan sausages with butter mashed swede, cauliflower cheese made with soya cream and vegan cheese, veggie curry made with coconut cream and cauliflower rice, veggie burger with applewood cheese melted on it and celeriac chips.
I don’t know if that helps with ideas? It’s definitely not as low carb as when I was a meat eater but hopefully low enough to make a difference 🤞
This week I was going to try to make bolognaise with walnuts and mushrooms instead of meat and then use that base for a chilli and lasagne using courgette slices instead of pasta. Worth a try! X

recreationalcalpol · 09/08/2021 11:29

B: berries, Greek yog and keto granola
L: leftover meatballs and cauliflower rice.
D: might do roast chicken if I get time in between dealing with toddler / 3 month old / dog Wink

Nobloat21 · 09/08/2021 11:54

@Daveggie1 wow! So much tasty food! I need to take note. I'm basically eating vegetables and halloumi Grin. No wonder I went a bit mad!

Rshard · 09/08/2021 12:03

Thanks for the new thread, 4lbs off here which I’m very pleased with. Well done to all those that have lost and everyone who is koko!

I agree with prettybird, bugcat mini goals are definitely a good idea, break it down into chunks rather than focussing on the end point.

Good luck for week 2

TidyDancer · 09/08/2021 12:04

Hi @bugcat, I'm in a similar boat to you I think! I started the year on 299lbs, lost a bit through calorie counting and then fell off the wagon. This feels more doable for me because I'm not getting hungry really and I don't need to deprive myself of all the things I like.

If you're anything like me, it's the small wins along the way that will keep you motivated!

ouchmyfeet · 09/08/2021 13:13

Afternoon all,

The battery has finally gone in my scales so I'll buy some today and weigh in tomorrow.

@bugcat I completely understand where you are and the overwhelming nature of it all. I started at 315lbs in January. My first target was 300 then I managed to get down to 280 by the end of my first bootcamp. Still hovering there 3 months later as I got a bit out of the zone and moved house which was really stressful. The best thing about bootcamp is that it taught me that every little bit of carbs that you refuse/avoid makes a difference. Even with almost 3 months off piste I have maintained my loss so far. I want to shift another stone this bootcamp and am hopeful that I can work around the holiday snacking etc to do that. It gets easier after a week or two and once you start to see results that's addictive and drives you on.

Selfishly I'm really glad there are a couple of other people here my size Blush. We can do it together.

ouchmyfeet · 09/08/2021 13:14

Agree with @TidyDancer , not feeling too hungry is really key

I think having a range of sizes/weights is helpful to everyone. It used to intimidate me when I'd see threads where people were a lot smaller than I am/was but I don't feel like that now. It's good to see where people have got to and we all have to start somewhere!
GrasswillbeGreener · 09/08/2021 13:34

Thanks all for this. 7 lb down for me which is a great start. I've had several abortive attempts to "get back on" bootcamp over the last couple of years, just not had the will to do it properly. I think I may have found the right balance for me, for now, more bootcamp lite with small bits of fruit (not every day) and a daily square of dark chocolate (85%) - without pushing me over into the stupid eating that's spoiled attempts before.

I've put weight on over the last 18 months which has led to a "summer wardrobe crisis". This morning I put a skirt on that I've had to wear with the zip partly undone. Today I could do the button up without difficulty! Yay!

Next week I'll weigh in a day early, because I'm going to a residential music course for the week. Haven't made a definite plan how I'll eat there. I think I will just enjoy not having to cook, and try to keep listening to my body better about what I actually feel like having. Green vegetables and butter may do one meal nicely, if I eat a good breakfast and have whatever's reasonable at the other meal.

BlueLilyLilyBlue · 09/08/2021 13:35

Checking into the new thread! My baby went to nursery for the first time today so I am in floods 😭

Considering last week I was on holiday I somehow have lost 4 pounds Shock no idea how. I was very careful though, but I'm always worried about hidden carbs when you're out on dressings and things. The couple of weeks beforehand I had no weight loss so it was a little whoosh. I'm 12st 7lb now and need to get down to at least pre pregnancy weight of 11 stone, preferably 10st 7 to give myself a little half stone leeway. So still some way to go and then I really struggle with maintaining so that will be a challenge.

B - nuts and Greek yoghurt
L- beef slices cucumber and mustard on SLC bread with salad bits
D - chicken baked with pesto and Mozzarella with some green veg in butter
S - some 90% chocolate

pinknsparkly · 09/08/2021 13:50

I've lost 2.4lb this week so I'm very happy! Especially as it didn't feel like a proper diet and I definitely didn't drink enough water....

Stuntnun posted a great explanation on the last thread about why cheese isn't recommended (or to be used with caution only) but can I ask why nuts aren't allowed? I've got a few snack sized bags in the cupboard with a carb count of 6.9g/100g (1.7g per bag). They're such an easy and transportable snack that it seems a shame not to be able to eat them Grin

prettybird · 09/08/2021 14:25

Down 3.25lb on last week to 11st 6.25lb Smile - so reached my first target of getting back below 11.5 stone Grin

Next target is to get below 11st 2.25lb as that's where I got to last Christmas. Xmas Smile

Did my Ripped DVD and was then about to go for a c4km run when I got a phone call from the optician saying that ds (down from Aberdeen to help coach at some rugby camps this week) could get a cancellation at midday (he's not had his eyes tested in nearly 4 years Shock) so cue a lot of rejigging plans and the usage of the car so that everyone including dh could be at the rugby pitch in time to register people coming along, get ds to the optician and get back in time for the rugby camp.

My run didn't matter too much as I've got my own rugby training tonight.

venusandmars · 09/08/2021 15:48

@pinknsparkly if people are new to bootcamp (or are returning after a long break) then the first 2 weeks are strict as we get into the groove of burning fat as a primary source of fuel. After that most people find that their feelings of hunger have changed and they don't need any snacks between meals. That is a fine time to re-introduce small portions of nuts.

The challenge is that nuts are high in fat and calorific (even though we don't count calories nuts are always something to be cautious with). Your bags of pre-portioned nuts sound great, but many people will find that they open a big bag of nuts and find (out of habit, NOT need or hunger), that they are continually dipping their hand into the packet...

Also, different nuts have widely differing carb contents compare brazil nuts at 4g with cashews at 22g

Also it helps to think of this, not as a 'diet' but as an alternative way of eating.

oscarandelliesdad · 09/08/2021 16:07

Checking in to say we'll done everyone. 3lbs for me which was a surprise and not that well deserved as I fell into a glass of white wine a couple of times last week.
B- coffee and cream
L- weird combination of fridge findings while the dc ate cheese rolls.. Cheese, coleslaw, cucumber, an elderly tomato, wee bit of chorizo and some kimchi I found lurking on the bottom shelf. I don't think cheese and kimchi are natural bedfellows....
D- sausages, mashed celeriac, mushrooms, leeks and edemame beans. Think my gut is starting to forgive me for the alarming combination at lunch now.

Dellabob123 · 09/08/2021 16:39

I’m currently sitting in the car avoiding the fish and chip shop at the beach. I can not cave now.

I’m trying to overcome the urge with olives and almonds...that’s all I have!
