Had cauliflower cheese, roast chicken breast and asparagus griddled in butter... How is this diet food?! I'm so full and satisfied! And DH is jumping for joy Wink

Today's weight- 10st 8lbs 29% body fat!!

Whoop whoop

BIWI · 09/01/2016 12:10

Well done!

milkmilklemonade12 · 09/01/2016 12:49

feekerry that's amazing!! Well done you!

I didn't actually weigh myself at the start of this. I'm on day 4 now and wondering whether I made a mistake... But also, I kind of want to do this because I know how good it makes me feel rather than focussing too much on the scales. Because I find I get obsessed with it, and when the weight doesn't keep falling off in such amazing increments 2 or 3 months down the line, I'm prone to giving it up.

I'm trying it this way round, without scales for a little while. Time will tell I guess!

FelicityFunknickle · 09/01/2016 13:18

Well done milkmilk

feekerry · 09/01/2016 13:29

Tbh milkmilk it's not so much about the weight it's more how it looks and feels so after a couple of weeks I will prob just not bother with weighing as its hopefully going to become a way of life rather than a weight thing!

milkmilklemonade12 · 09/01/2016 13:40

feekerry that came out sounding like a criticism when it absolutely wasn't. I love reading about other people's weight loss. I'm an over empathiser, so reading about people's happiness and success rubs off on me and makes me feel happy too Smile

It's me who has the problem with scales and taking it seriously, and then not having the willpower to keep going without seeing massive losses Confused

I'm obviously going no - alcohol for this two weeks, I've also ditched caffeine, diet coke and milk, and I've not touched nuts either.

After this two weeks; how to proceed? Obviously I'm going to still have alcohol, I'm not a tee totaller and enjoying one or two glasses of wine two or three times a week either in my own home, or out with friends has been a way of life. Is wine something I can still consume? (Used to have about a bottle a week), or should I focus more on the G&T? Soda water is out for me. I've tried, tried, tried but I just couldn't. I like sugar free tonic water though. I googled wine and it said 2.6g of carbs per 100g, but as I've seen from messages on here, Google is far from the best source for nutrition facts.

Nuts... Which kind are best? They would be super handy to keep in a little pot in my bag, rather than toting crudités round the whole time!

Milk... Can I have a splash in tea? I like my tea brick red anyway, so I really do mean a splash!

Diet drinks... Sometimes or never again? Just gives me an alternative to tap water in the pub if I'm driving.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can provide advice Smile Flowers

Weight 4.1.16 81.2kg, this morning 78.8kg. Not bad, but I'm trying so hard. Interested to see the answers to the diet coke and alcohol questions too.

feekerry · 09/01/2016 16:38

Oh god no milkmilk not taking it like that!!
Re alcohol.. Hmm. I was a big big wine drinker. I am doing dry January and hope that it pushes me to a more sensible level of wine comumption after. If I could stick to 1.5 to 2 bottles of wine over the week after January I wil be okay with that but trying not to take that as a given. Hoping I have some revelation and don't drink again but not sure yet. Personally I would stick with small amounts of wine

BIWI · 09/01/2016 17:06

milkmilk - after the first two weeks of Bootcamp you can move on to Bootcamp Light. You should find Bootcamp Light rules here

milkmilklemonade12 · 09/01/2016 17:29

Thanks BIWI, I've saved that link to my phone now as well so I'll have it for the future Flowers

So essentially, wine is fine if restricted to the weekends. I can live with that. And I can take or leave beer/lager/cider anyway, certainly not had cider for many years.

Just checked though and I'm drinking 2L of water at my desk a day, when it should be 3L. I'm not accounting for the herbal tea I drink, or the glass of water I down in the mornings, but these can vary anyway. I had thought things were a little, erm, slow moving in the back door department Grin

feekerry I will be going back to wine, but also embracing my enjoyment of gin; it's very refreshing with a light tonic and really is thirst quenching in the summer. Know what you mean though; I am missing wine this evening.

FelicityFunknickle · 09/01/2016 20:30

So, this "carb flu"
What's it like? Because I wonder if that is what I have today.
Lethargy, headache, lack of appetite Shock
Am also struggling to sleep even though v tired.
Hey ho. Hoping to feel better tomorrow as I'd like to have a run.

FelicityFunknickle · 09/01/2016 20:31

Oh I cant get close to 2litres of water.

StuntNun · 09/01/2016 20:44

If anyone fancies a more structured approach to weight loss then my company, Ways of Eating has a 12-week Low Carb program starting from £79. The first week is free so if you fancy giving it a try then you can sign up here.

milkmilklemonade12 · 09/01/2016 21:35

felicity yes that would be it wink it's your body using up the last of your glycogen stores (or so DH says) and apparently, it's behaving the same way it would to withdrawal to drugs, or any other substance. Obviously still not on the same scale, but if it's true (and DH is quite clued up in nutrition), then that's quite shocking.

milkmilklemonade12 · 09/01/2016 21:36

Oh fgs I can't even Wink emoji properly any more. Anyhoo, it's 9:35, it's Saturday night... So I'm off... To bed!

FelicityFunknickle · 10/01/2016 07:09

milkmilk thanks. It was/is a bit like a withdrawal sort of thing. (So I've read Hmm)
I had to go to bed by 9pm Grin
Hoping to feel lots better. Must drink more.
Really missing wine

BIWI · 10/01/2016 08:08

Felicity - yep, that's carb flu! Make sure that you drink plenty of water - that's really important generally when you're low carbing - but also keep your fat levels up.

You also need to make sure your electrolyte intake is up/maintained, which means sodium, magnesium and potassium.

Sodium is key - so cook with salt, and add it to your food. If you're really suffering, then try a hot drink made with Oxo or Bovril or Marmite.

Eat plenty of salmon, avocado, spinach and natural (full fat) yoghurt for the others. For potassium you could also try using Lo-Salt as well as/instead of ordinary salt.

Just be aware that until you're properly fat adapted, which can take 2-4 weeks, exercise can feel harder. But don't panic - things will soon return to normal. You may even feel that you're performing better!

There's a really good couple of books by Drs Phinny and Volek, called The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living/The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance. They do their own original research into low carbing, and have focused in the latter book on elite athletes and how low carbing works for them.

BIWI · 10/01/2016 08:09

I'd like to second StuntNun's suggestion as well, by the way. Those of you who have Bootcamped before (or even just lurked on the threads!) will know just how knowledgeable she is about the science behind low carbing. Although you have to pay for the programme, it's really good value, IMVHO.

StuntNun · 10/01/2016 08:16

Thanks BIWI, Ways of Eating have had some really great results from our Low Carb program. If anyone wants any more info just give me a shout.

FelicityFunknickle · 10/01/2016 08:20

Thank you BIWI
I am making a real effort with fluids

milkmilklemonade12 · 10/01/2016 10:24

I have a mass play date tomorrow at my house.. about 10 children coming (with mums in tow, thank goodness!)

Luckily, I've messaged everyone and they're all on dry January and on diets, so no one wants wine or crisps. So I've bought heaps of bottled water and I'm doing crudités on a platter with hummus (not for me, and tbh I don't like it anyway) and a sour cream dip. I'm hoping that they'll appreciate the gesture that I'm trying to not ruin their new sobriety or diet, rather than secretly hoping I'd break out the wine and crisps Wink

BIWI · 10/01/2016 12:58

Parmesan crisps would be a good alternative (for anyone low carbing that is - for the low cal/low fat dieters they're a nightmare!)

Coarsely grate some Parmesan and drop it in heaps on a baking tray (non-stick, or on baking parchment) and bake at a high heat until the cheese melts and starts to brown. Leave them to cool before you take them off the tray, and they will have hardened up and gone crispy.

For extra bite you could sprinkle some cayenne or black pepper on top of them before you bake them.
