Week 2 - May Low Carb Bootcamp - our first official weigh-in!

Morning all!

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And don't forget the the Weight Tracker (I hope that link works but apologies if it doesn't!)

So we come to our first weigh-in. I know from last week's thread that results are going to be a bit mixed - but I hope that most of you will see a good loss.

If you haven't, don't panic! Sometimes it can take a bit of time for your body to trust you, especially if you're a bit of a serial dieter.

If you think you've been doing everything according to the rules, but still haven't seen a loss, then list out for me your meals over the last 3 or 4 days and let me see if I can spot anything obvious.

But whatever the results are today, please remember it's not a competition!

We all lose weight at different rates. And someone who sees a big loss in one week isn't going to see that every week.

And remember - it's not all about what the scales tell you. You'll find that your body shape can change even if the scales remain unchanged!

Good luck to you all.

best I'm trying to make my own coyo using a yoghurt making bacteria I bought online. So far I haven't killed it (I hope) but neither have I fed it proper stuff. Although I am currently trying it on a bit of blue dragon cocnut cream mixed with water.

blessed I think 50g would be considered lc. I seem to remember Atkins very strict bit is 20g and that's seriously low. I may have muddled your cream/carb worry with another poster... pepper? But have you been bc for longer than two weeeks? If no, you should still be on three meals a day. No don't worry about calories. We have about the same amount to lose, so I can hold hands. I concentrated very hard on learning to listen to my stomach. I discovered I could still overeat on this woe, and I have drastically reduced my portion size. I did this by making sure before a meal I had a very big drink of water, then ate the meal, which I roughly halved, and then had another large drink. I found that halving my food made me feel panicked and nearly cry. I was so emotionally invested in a big plateful. I was so so used to over eating at every meal. I still have a pang of sadness when I serve up tasty food and have a stomach sized portion. I think I might find out exactly what size a stomach is, and crochet one to examine.

digger how annoying for you! Speaking from very recent experience I have to say it becomes easier with practise. If I'm somewhere that's table service, I say I'd like to order last, and smile coyly and say it's because I have some questions, or that 'I need to be awkward/difficult/special' It usually works as a bit of forewarning for the server, and an icebreaker. Then I always speak quite quietly, so they lean in, and I question them thoroughly on the ingredients of each of my choices. It feels so alien at first, but after a few times, you don't even think.

lex we have been to see fury road again tonight Blush (different cinema, free tickets)

tetley you deserve a medal woman!

patapof we do mashed swede with mashed celeriac plus butter, pepper and cream (in the days of dairy) and it's tremendous. I've used the leftover to make fishcakes with. Have also heard people making chips with it and some dirty beggars eating it raw spread with butter Grin. I imagine dicing it up small and frying it with lardons and cheese would work, or thin slicing it and doing a gratin might be nice, but I haven't tried that myself.

So as a daily weigher I am up a pound today again. Have been supermindful of veg portions, and caffeine intake.

Todays food
B Green salad with smoked mackerel
L Cold meat/olives/mayo (stopped eating half way through as dp had served me and it was too much)
D Chicken (with skin, natch) garlic mayo, small salad and a very small spoonful of aubergine and tomato sauce.

3 + litres water
2 cups lady grey with almond milk
1 cup choco chilli with almond milk

Hi,

5 weeks in and have lost 10lbs so far - but haven't lost anything this week, nothing has changed in how I eat. Is this normal?

Dumdedumdedum · 24/05/2015 07:14

Hello, everyone - hope all is good back in Blighty this Bank Holiday week-end. (Does Eire have a holiday tomorrow as well, I wonder?!)

I'm feeling a bit defeated by this. Back up to my starting point again this morning. So, yesterday I reduced my coffee intake, but I think my water intake wasn't as high as usual. Otherwise:

B: Eggs scrambled in butter with double cream, chives cut in, dry fried chorizo.
L: Tarragon chicken and cauliflower mash a la IPD, spinach with butter and cream.
D: Left over chicken and mash, Swiss chard with butter and cream.
Ah - followed by possibly too much Reblochon cheese?

I don't know what to eat today, am feeling tired and demoralised. (Fair enough, RL is getting me down, in any case.) Am cutting coffee down further today and attempting to up my water intake.

Dumdedumdedum · 24/05/2015 07:43

Wise Women of the LCBC - help, please!

I have calculated (roughly, as I didn't measure anything) my nutrition breakdown for yesterday.

Calories (kcal) 1871
Protein (g) 93.4
Carbohydrate (g) 20.0
Fat (g) 156.4
Fibre (g) 8.3
Fruit & Veg 5.8

Both calories and fat look too high for my metabolism, as I know it, to lose weight. And actually, if it's possible, carbs look too low - I've heard people say that you need some carbs from sources other than vegetables to keep your metabolism going, and I'm wondering if mine might be like that?

Dumdedumdedum · 24/05/2015 07:46

Gosh, I forgot the cheese above and that adds to calories and fat in quite a big way!
Sorry, should all this be on the questions thread?

StuntNun · 24/05/2015 07:54

Dumde I don't know how much difference the cheese makes but those amounts look perfect. That's what I would have aimed for when I was trying to get the last five pounds off to reach nine stone.

StuntNun · 24/05/2015 07:57

The way Bootcamp is designed you don't need to count calories or watch your macros. Some people are more analytical than others or have come from a calorie-counting diet but in general I would recommend following the Bootcamp rules and letting the calories and macros take care of themselves. If you have an extended stall or are very close to goal it can be useful to log food for a day or two to get a better idea of what you are eating but no one should need to do it routinely.

blessedenough · 24/05/2015 08:21

Thanks STUNT - its reassuring that i dont have to worry about cals - my 1400 cal day didnt feel like a lot of food.

I will reduce caffeine, reduce dairy and up water to see if that helps things move in the right direction again. I might introduce an afternoon BPC.

Dumdedumdedum · 24/05/2015 08:23

Stunt, I have more than 6 stone to shift and nothing is happening. Hence my dismay.

Tetley650 · 24/05/2015 08:25

Reading through these this morning I think I have not really been eating enough - in honesty it's a trust thing - my brain is trying in still the old Pavlovian response lose weight drop the calories.
Hopefully the penny has finally dropped

Romeyroo · 24/05/2015 08:31

hang, I can't really write much at the moment as DS has taken my laptop to watch train cartoons on YouTube so am on phone; and it is only a matter of time before DC start bickering. I can also PM you if you would rather. I actually think identifying the problem (secret binge eating) and being able to write it down is a massively important step. if you don't name the problem, you can't begin to solve it.
There were and are a lot of complex factors around my relationship with food, some of which I splurged on the in between BC BC thread, and I think addressing these is a long process.

However, thinking on what has been helpful in the short term, last summer I did eight weeks of CBT (the reasons were not related to weight, but my unhappiness with weight gain came up). A big part of this is understanding and challenging your thought processes and learning how to change them - they are not automatic.

Within that, the therapist taught me mindfulness techniques, on the basis that daily practice of these teaches your brain to break the automatic thought processes. This helped me when I started BC last October to be mindful of what I was eating and why.

I stopped doing the mindfulness a few weeks ago as I have PTSD and it brought up unresolved issues. I am working these through but I wanted to put that health warning on, so to speak. Some issues you can address yourself, others you may decide need professional support. I started the mindfulness within a therapy setting. I am not saying you need therapy, but it might be a good idea to see what RL support is available. You and your health are worth this Flowers

But even being mindful of what you are putting in your mouth, when and why is a good start in identifying unhealthy patterns of eating and trying to address them

Dumde, my main thought on reading your menu was too much dairy - I only have hard cheeses for allergy reasons but even then, I notice the effect on the scales.

day one of new coffee plan...

ditavonteesed · 24/05/2015 08:38

stunt nun thank, is it really detrimental to weight loss to eat fewer calories on this woe? If I can get that in y head I might be able to increase, I ate 1800 yesterday and am down half a pound this morning. It is just so programmed isn't it.

I have checked my macros over the .last 3 weeks and I have been eating about 65-70 fat, 8% carbs and 25-30%protein, does that sound about right?

My carbs are always under 30g.

ewanhoozami · 24/05/2015 09:14

We want our bodies to be fat-adapted. To run on & burn stored and dietary fat, not dietary carbs.

Fat is our fuel to lose weight. The fact that fat is more calorie-dense is neither here nor there because all calories are not equal.

A couple of major studies (Benoit and Keswick, I think, I'll try and find a link) concluded that subjects burned more body fat when their calorie intake came from fats than subjects whose intake came from the exactly same amount of calories from carbs.

conclusion - get the fat down you

ewanhoozami · 24/05/2015 09:21

Discovered that DH has used the last of the eggs for one of his protein shake monstrosities. Breakfast disaster for me.

So on discovering two egg whites left over from mayo-making and a ripe avocado I have made a very jolly avocado souffle omelette by whizzing them up with a hand-blender.

ditavonteesed · 24/05/2015 09:24

wow that sounds liek a rather posh breakfast, pretend it was planned and you are that sophisticated.

ditavonteesed · 24/05/2015 09:27

I am going to a food festical today with loads of street food stalls, no idea what I am going to eat (if anything), they had brockwerst stalls last year would a big german sausage be ok? I will not be sabotaging this close to weigh in that is for sure.

ewanhoozami · 24/05/2015 09:54

From what I remember (from perusing the nutritional info on sausage packets in Lidl) the german sausages like bratwurst are usually lower in carbs as they're less bulked up with filler. So sausage yourself up matey Grin

ewanhoozami · 24/05/2015 09:55

I'm going to a soft play today so I'm probably fucked unless I smuggle some cold meats in up me jumper.

Yes, I am insane going to soft play on a rainy bank holiday Sunday.

ewanhoozami · 24/05/2015 10:06

PS sorry it's Kekwick who did the calorie vs. calorie study,

here's a summary and critique of it by Bill Lagakos who writes really well on low carb nutrition

Dumdedumdedum · 24/05/2015 10:28

Romey - Pleeeease don't tell me too much dairy, it's the cream and butter which make this diet palatable for me! I can cut out cheese OK. Probably. Hangdog Grin

Romeyroo · 24/05/2015 10:52

I am not telling you too much dairy, I am telling you MY issues with dairySmile and that other people have also suggested dairy can impede weight loss

Would you be open to considering alternatives?

I just packed a picnic for me and DC and left out the cheese cubes, so I do feel your pain.

Heffalumps · 24/05/2015 10:59

Good morning
