Week 2 - May Low Carb Bootcamp - our first official weigh-in!

Morning all!

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And don't forget the the Weight Tracker (I hope that link works but apologies if it doesn't!)

So we come to our first weigh-in. I know from last week's thread that results are going to be a bit mixed - but I hope that most of you will see a good loss.

If you haven't, don't panic! Sometimes it can take a bit of time for your body to trust you, especially if you're a bit of a serial dieter.

If you think you've been doing everything according to the rules, but still haven't seen a loss, then list out for me your meals over the last 3 or 4 days and let me see if I can spot anything obvious.

But whatever the results are today, please remember it's not a competition!

We all lose weight at different rates. And someone who sees a big loss in one week isn't going to see that every week.

And remember - it's not all about what the scales tell you. You'll find that your body shape can change even if the scales remain unchanged!

Good luck to you all.

Dumde, my plan for reducing coffee starting tomorrow is not to have one first thing as I read your natural adrenaline kicks in when you wake so the best time is two and a half hours after you get up. So good quality coffee at this point, then half caff in the afternoon if I feel I need one, but trying to lose the afternoon one.

As I only came up with the plan earlier today, it starts tomorrow but I am not having a coffee in the afternoon today. I will certainly let you know how I get on.

Busy day today, so not really caught up with things, but hope everyone has a good weekend x

diggerdigsdogs · 23/05/2015 16:36

I'd like to talk about how and why I had a wobble today please. I'm fucking annoyed with myself but don't know how I should have handled it. Well, I know how I should have handled it. Hmm at self.

We went out to brunch with very good friends. I ordered as per WOE (eggs, bacon, mushrooms) but without going into details it was full of sugar and horribly sweet. The whole thing was like this so I couldn't pick out anything that I could eat.

WWYD?

Should I have checked before? I didn't actually think it was a meal I had to check ffs. I would have felt v embarrassed sending it back or not eating it, and yes they would both have asked if food was ok if I didn't eat it - I've not told anyone other than DH that I'm doing this WOE.

I'm reading IGTLW and so much is resonating with me but would love some LC thoughts on what to do when eating out and the food isn't appropriate or eating with friends and food isn't appropriate. I do feel a twat. I'm a grown up ffs, I can so no to something that I don't want!

As an aside it also wasn't actually very nice taste wise. In my thin days I would have literally pushed it away and not eaten it. I wonder what has changed and why I feel like I should put something I don't like or want into my body.

ewanhoozami · 23/05/2015 17:06

Don't kick yourself digger it's done and you can definitely handle it differently next time. You can say to the waiting staff that you can't have sugar. You don't have to say why.

I'm a caterer and honestly, I'd much much rather a customer asked in advance about how a dish was made if they were on a special diet so they could then eat and enjoy it. So would every chef I know.

I guarantee that you will never be the fussiest customer they've ever had Grin

ewanhoozami · 23/05/2015 17:17

Today:

B - 3 fried eggs and spinach
L - 2 boiled eggs and lidl mini bratwurst
D - Corned beef hash made with swede, leeks and gherkins. And another fried egg.

S - posh scratchings

BestIsWest · 23/05/2015 18:17

I'm going to a party tonight. It's one of those where you all take a dish. I'm down for dessert so I'm taking a pavlova with whipped cream and berries. At least I can have some cream. The host is providing cheese and salad so at least I will be able to eat that. It's out doors, luckily it's glorious here.

plumstone · 23/05/2015 18:36

HI all - today has been to say the least odd - TOTM started three days early with determination - I am on the pill and have one more to take this cycle, and TOTM would not usually start till Wednesday then five light to moderate days and pill starts again. IT definitely explains my tiredness which has not gone away, today crashed after lunch (2pm) and woke up at 4:50) WTAF I am normally duracell bunny like with energy and the last week is killing me. On the plus have been dairy free (still butter for cooking) as in no cheese, no cream and not hungary so that good!!

B - Fried eggs and two sausages
L - Cold Chicken with skin and cerlaric remoulade (lush)
D - Pork Belly and diced fried celariac
W - 1.5 down and 1.5 to go

Have a great evening - I may have to retire to bed as this cooking malarky has me knackered - AGAIN!!!!

sassandfaff · 23/05/2015 18:38

It's lovely here too. We've just had homemade burgers with guacamole dip, salsa. Sour cream and rocket with fried mange tout, outside on the patio. Delicious.

LexLoofah · 23/05/2015 19:10

tetley that is annoying re house viewings. Annoyed with myself I arranged two for day one 10am one 6pm so we have to keep it tidy all day. Hope Yours go ok.

LexLoofah · 23/05/2015 19:25

B - mushroom & courgette omelette, cuppa, creamy coffee
L - scallop salad with lovely pan fat drizzled over with some lemon juice & hm mayo - house now stinks though so hope it airs our before next viewing
D - DH is cooking grouper, no idea how yet but I told him to 'think fat'

Experimenting with An earl grey and coconut butter in case I decide to do no dairy next week and also trying to stick to one tea with milk a day which is harder at the weekend, wasn't bad, went sort of creamy.

mad Max Fury road was the business! like a proper action film used to be before all that cgi rubbish.

blessedenough · 23/05/2015 19:26

Lex i have just sold my house and i seriously would have taken a low offer just so i didnt have to keep show home standard for longer than necessary - luckily sold to 3rd person that saw it - moving at a snails pace now but thats a different thread! ARRGGHH.

Weather is lovely here as well and we have been swimming in a lush outdoor pool - felt like we were on holiday - fed the kids there and the temptation to eat their chips was so strong but i resisted - why are kids meals always breaded shit with chips????

Can anyone help re cornflour?? I am not in the first two weeks but dont do BC lite it only works for me on strict BC. I have several chinese recipes that call for frying beef or chicken in cornflour -its only a dusting but how bad is it??? (Goks chinese btw - amazing). On those days that i cook his food i am VERY low carb the rest of the day to compensate - please tell me its ok?? Please.

sassandfaff · 23/05/2015 20:06

blessed I don't know how bad it is. Not sure of the carb content. Gave you thought about almond flour instead? I do breaded chicken for the dcs using it. I do it for myself, dp and dd1 but I put in spices as well. Everyone loves it.

Dumdedumdedum · 23/05/2015 20:11

blessede Cornflour, average:
Per 1 Tsp/5g
Calories (kcal) 17.7
Protein (g) 0
Carbohydrate (g) 4.3
Sugars (g) 0
Fat (g) 0.1
Saturates (g) 0
Fibre (g) 0
Sodium (g) 0.0026

I think Sass's suggestion of almond flour sounds a better option!

sassandfaff · 23/05/2015 20:16

I just looked it up and per 100g it is 91g carb.

Tetley650 · 23/05/2015 20:28

Think next week going to do deep fried fish and lc chips for ds and I using almond flour and fizzy water batter.

Each viewing means getting three dogs and ds out of the house. We sat in a car park for over an hour revising Latin!
Weight still all over the place but sticking to my guns. If no whoosh next week think I will uber at the beginning of week 4. So planning to succeed and not giving in and breaking the seal.

blessedenough · 23/05/2015 20:33

Will try almond flour - i only use 2tbsps but every gram counts as i can sadly testify. Hopefully doesnt taste almondy? and gives a nice crispy coating??

Loathe to give up my chinese but will if i have to!!! Determined face!

LexLoofah · 23/05/2015 21:35

blessed congrats on selling, yes I am with you on the sell it lower to get it done, not that mine is a show home by anymeans, just decluttered and clean - DCs have decided today is the day to paint, make a fort and make a potion using toothpaste and goodness knows what else - don't want to stifle their creativity but drew the line at request to crack open their new pottery kit
tetley an hour in a car park doing Latin? Oh man, I will stop moaning now, you win, that is bad

Maybe Try coconut flour too, I do a mix of that and almond or ground hazelnuts for fish and chicken - lovely, sure it would be nice in Chinese type dishes

sassandfaff · 23/05/2015 21:49

Blessed I don't think it tastes almondy, but then again, I tend to put in spices like Cajun or jerk. I just dip in egg first and then in the almond mix. I've found it to be a bit gooey without the spices added.

Patapouf · 23/05/2015 22:18

Is almond flour the same as ground almonds?

B: coyo and flaxseed
L: leftover tuna nicoise
D: Duck breast with celeriac dauphinoise. I used SO much cheese though because I was worried I'd taste the gross celery flavour but it was delish!

Proud of myself for resisting the literal mountain of carby evilness at work today that someone had brought in for the team. I just kept reading the packets for the carb content because I had to sit and eat my lunch next to it and it was taunting me. Sod 20g carbs in a mouthful of plastic fake cake though!!

Gcalgske · 23/05/2015 23:06

Blessed I don't know if almond flour will work, depends on the dish. For breading yes it's great but when cooking Chinese in the bad old days I would marinade the meat in cornflour to 'silken' it (makes chicken etc very moist and silky). Then when you cook the meat it thickens the sauce. Unless you can get the very very finely ground almond flour it won't thicken your sauce just make it grainy. I've resigned myself to thinner sauces or very occasionally (not sure where BC stands on it??) I use xanthan gum. It doesn't mix well in fluid but is very soluble in fat. I tend to heat whatever oil I'm using and fry 1/2 a tsp then add liquid, whisking all the time. 1/2 tsp would make enough sauce for a big stir fry so you don't use a lot.

StuntNun · 23/05/2015 23:07

Blessed and Diva please don't try to restrict calories on this WOE. It can be a useful tool to see where you stand and particularly to work out your macros when you're close to goal but it isn't necessary. 1500 calories is likely to be too little for effective weight loss. When I was losing the last few pounds to reach 9 stone I was still eating a minimum of 1800 calories per day. I know it seems that less calories should be better but too few calories makes your body cling on to its fat stores whereas eating enough sends the message that food is in plentiful supply and it's 'safe' to reduce fat storage.

PeppermintFrog · 23/05/2015 23:07

My sweet tooth is proper biting me tonight but I've told it to piss right off, I've done well today and I'm determined not to frig it up now! Well done everyone who has the added stress of house selling, moving, carby offices etc, you are doing so well!

Gcalgske · 23/05/2015 23:08

Patapouf you can get almond flour which is very finely ground but it's very expensive and difficult to find (here at least). Ground almonds / almond meal work well in most almond flour recipes.

Gcalgske · 23/05/2015 23:18

Today's food;
B: BPC
L: 1 lettuce wrap with 1 slice ham, slice of cheese, mustard, Mayo, gherkin tolled up. Should have had more fat.
D: at a pub - no suitable mains so had a couple of starters.
Fried wild mushrooms with garlic and cream (yum) and a small bunch (8 stalks?) asparagus wrapped in Parma ham with a poached egg and hollandaise. Was nice but I was still hungry when I got home. The portions at the restaurant were pretty small and the others were selfishly quite reasonably wanting their own butter for their bread. Hmm
Made a plate of celeriac chips with grated mozzerella melted on top when I got in. Blooming lovely.

Patapouf · 24/05/2015 00:01

Thanks gcal not sure what I'd use it for anyway! Breaded chicken might be nice I suppose! Or maybe in stuffing? I've got some coconut flour in the cupboard and I've no idea what to do with that either!

Is there anything creative that can be done with swede? Apart from mash?

Gcalgske · 24/05/2015 00:13

Swede chips, swede curry soup, swede Boulanger, rumbledethumps (I use swede/celeriac), I've made a nice swede cake (like a hash brown), in stew, corn beef hash or smoked haddock hash. Mmmmmm
