Week 9 - Low Carb Bootcamp - The End is Nigh!

BIWI · 10/03/2014 07:41

Morning all!

Here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And don't forget the Weight Tracker

As we get to the end of this Bootcamp, I'd like you all to think about how MNHQ can make our space even better for the next time around.

The original plan was to move to the Weight Tracker and drop the Spreadsheet, which would mean Willie wouldn't have to tend it all the time - but we seem to have kept it going for this Bootcamp. If we were to lose it next time, what do you think you would miss the most?

For me, I think definitely the information in the tabs needs to be transferred over somehow - but is there anything else you'd like to see?

Anyway, a busy week for me as I'm off to Lille Tuesday/Wednesday, up at 5.00 am tomorrow and not getting back home till around 10.00 pm on Wednesday. All I will see will the inside of a taxi, a French supermarket, an office block and another taxi - no time even to go out for dinner on Tuesday night!

And I have no idea what's going to happen on the food front as it's all out of my control But then, that's what this WOE is all about - making the best choices we can at the time.

So - good luck to you all, hope that the fine weather helps you have a great week Flowers

Blush

Thanks all.

But my excess weight went on very quickly, so should also come off quickly

I was pregnant Aug-Dec and ballooned, and Dh was also fighting cancer, so had a pretty traumatic few months.

I need to be 140lb to be 'comfortable'. Just seems a long way off at the moment.

Well done everyone else Flowers

WhooshFuckerFairy · 11/03/2014 17:04

I'm fat too - but lurvely ... ( silly mood ) in fact - am 'pfatt'... How do you say it ? .... The young person term that means really cool ... trashy - you will know - don't let me down ... !

WhooshFuckerFairy · 11/03/2014 17:14

Too impatient ... Talking to myself ! Found it on urban dictionary :-)

Pfaff
(făf)

  1. a cool or awesome person.

That , ladies , is us - cool and awesome

monkeyfacegrace · 11/03/2014 17:17

I have never heard the word.

Im 26.

Seriously uncool.

Oh, oh, oh, can we be 'sick' though, I know that one!

SayraT · 11/03/2014 17:55

Crabby People know not to take my pens etc because I like my lab book to be written in the same type of pen throughout. Also, I went to the effort of going to stores to get my pen. If they want a new pen then they can go and buy one!!! It was funny though and I knew I was being unreasonable, my good friend who swore she didn't have it found it on her desk and tried to blame it on the wee quiet student we have.

Snowie I'm hoping that it is just the WOE as I don't want my periods to go back to being like this Sad

Monkey you are doing really well and I agree with what LMD says are you using fat as a negative term or just as an accurate description? You are doing something about being "fat" and doing really well Grin

LMD No I am onto my 3rd implant, this one is due out/renewed in October this year. I've been fine until this period and maybe the last one as well where I was being unreasonable. I just feel sorry for my work colleagues having to listen to me rant! Today I was really pissed off at my lab coat, it kept popping open Angry so I stormed off to stores and got a new lab coat..I went a bit far and I now have a lab coat which is 3 sizes too big Blush

Again, sorry for just talking about myself. When I feel better I'll do a superpost.

Going to have a nice warm bath and early night tonight and hope I am less irrational in the morning Grin

SayraT · 11/03/2014 17:56

Oh look Monkey you are doing so well I had to tell you twice Grin

Notsoskinnyminny · 11/03/2014 18:26

whoosh you've just made me spit tea all over the keyboard Grin I hope you don't smell like great aunt wotshername who we visited every Sunday who sat on a newspaper and always had the alluring smell of eau de pee and wanted to give us the coconut bits of bounty bars after she'd eaten the chocolate

sayra I feel your pain - I'm on HRT but had 2 heavy periods in 2 weeks with a week between them and my cyst has flared up again.

trash I love that you're so proud of your son, I wish I could be so glowing can't think of another word about mine but there are times when he sounds like his DF and he's got his mannerisms even though he hasn't seen the bastard for years. I'm going to battle through the 4-way temporary traffic lights and pick him up from the station.

Catch ya later losers mwah

GatoradeMeBitch · 11/03/2014 18:39

Hey everyone! Smile I just had pork shoulder and a lettuce wedge salad for dinner. So nice! I made a mistake a few days ago, and at the last minute added a small tin of beans and sausages to my fry-up. I thought the carb count would be low - turns out it was MASSIVE. Something like 29g carbs in the one tiny tin. And I spent the next morning reliving childbirth on the toilet... Sorry if TMI!

I've decided to up my game and go on ubercamp Thursday to Saturday, I need to tempt the whoosh fairy. I've finished the double cream at lunchtime which is convenient. Can I do ubercamp and keep the Total? Would it make much difference really? I always look forward to it at the end of the day now!

captainmummy · 11/03/2014 19:55

Whooosh - do you mean Phatt? I believe the yoof use it to mean good....

WhooshFuckerFairy · 11/03/2014 20:01

Yes - that's the one captain - that's perfect ! We're none of us fat .... we're Phatt Grin

WhooshFuckerFairy · 11/03/2014 20:19

skinny .... I got away with the first meeting after the 'event' ..... But had to excuse myself from the second and 'work from home ' !

StuntNun · 11/03/2014 20:23

Gatorade it depends on whether dairy stalls you or not. Ubercamp has two purposes: to eliminate dairy and to be very low carb. If you're fine with dairy then Total will be okay so long as you keep your carb count low, about 20g per day. I use MFP on ubercamp days to keep track of calories and carb counts but I don't usually bother with it the rest of the time.

Piscivorus · 11/03/2014 21:17

Well I had an interesting and pleasantly surprising day. Our local council is clearly pushing public health forward on the agenda and following on from our alcohol awareness course last week we were asked to attend an obesity meeting today.

I went expecting to hear the usual low fat, high carb guff and was really surprised to find the service has been contracted out and the company doing it are really much more pragmatic than the NHS dieticians. I mentioned cutting back on carbs just to gauge the reaction and, rather than throwing her hands up in horror, she said good idea as long as still eating veg and not cutting them out completely.

They are aiming for a healthy way of eating rather than any particular fixed diet, are advising avoiding processed and low fat foods as you will feel hungry again soon after and echoed a lot of the advice we see on here.
They run 12 week, 6 month or 2 year programmes of food and exercise advice according to age, BMI, etc and have found the bigger patients who are referred pre-bariatric surgery often do well enough that they opt to continue the programme and decline the surgery.

I feel really conflicted now as I bloody hate the idea of privatising the NHS and it is all happening through the back door (we have several Virgin Health contracts locally) but this was so much better than any diet or exercise stuff we have seen before.

EvaTheOptimist · 11/03/2014 21:19

Gatorade... well to be perfectly honest, although it is not what you want to hear, if you are doing ubercamp I would not have the Total while you are on ubercamp. My personal experience is that dairy treats at the end of the day is a good way to stay-the-same; and the whole reason you're doing ubercamp is to get a downwards nudge or kickstart. But test it out for yourself?

EvaTheOptimist · 11/03/2014 21:40

Encouraging messages Pisci

Well, tonight, I gave a speech at the planning committee meeting to save our field (the issue I organised a protest about 2 weeks ago) AND the councillors refused the development, 10 to 1. HOO. RAY!

Although it is all wrong to use food as a reward, yada yada... I have celebrated with green and blacks dark chocolate. Which I did find very sweet indeed, so taste-buds have changed.

So I've proved I can do this public speaking lark as long as I've been able to practise the speech approx 3000 times beforehand!

There will be an appeal but tonight is for being relieved and savouring the chocolate victory.

MrsHerculePoirot · 11/03/2014 22:14

crabby I just wanted to share my low GI experience with you if you don't mind. As you know I am diabetic and therefore very insulin resistant. I tried low GI for about a year with very little success and I know that many diabetics from the forums I am on also found the same. For me, I found that any carbs or sugar spiked my blood sugars way too high and my blood results didn't improve in have slightest in that time - white rice vs brown rice for example both just spiked me really high. It may well be for someone who isn't insulin resistant it works, but using low GI for me wasn't any good and overall carb count was much more effective. I know that some diabetics use low GL rather than GI slightly more effectively, but for me it involved so much weighing and counting it was too much like calorie counting again and I felt deprived and hungry a lot of the time, so didn't stick to it!!!

BIWI · 11/03/2014 22:36

Evening all. Just checking in quickly before I collapse into bed. A long, long day today and not very successful on the food front.

Food on the Eurostar was carbtastic. I ended up having an egg and cress sandwich on wholemeal. Lunchtime, I found a cafe in the hypermarket complex and had a pot of 'fromage blanc' - a bit like Total, but no idea how carby - clearly full fat which was lovely, and a pot of rocket, mozzarella, pesto and cherry tomatoes.

But then at the research facility we weren't fed until almost 8 o'clock, and I was starving, so a couple of pieces of chocolate and two biscuits did pass my lips. When my supper arrived, I had asked for a salad, and it was chicken on a bed of lettuce, with a humungous pile of grated carrot and balsamic vinaigrette.

A small glass of wine when we got back to the hotel rounded off the day.

Not horrendous, I suppose, but not really that great. And no idea what tomorrow will bring.

Piscivorus · 11/03/2014 23:52

BIWI Aujourd'hui j'ai échoué, pourtant, est demain un autre jour comme ils disent. (with the aid of O level French and Google translate!)

WhooshFuckerFairy · 12/03/2014 05:45

Quick check in ... Up at 5am to catch a train to a 'troubled families' conference in London .

Well done eva on the triumph !! That's fantastic - hugely well done - everyone must be delighted .
biwi - well done on navigating the catering - sounds like you are wise - I will need to cope with conference sandwiches today , so have a briefcase full of babybels and almonds ...!!
Have a good day all- long day for me, home again at 10pm so will try not to do any - so tired / deserve lots of food trick !

Seri77 · 12/03/2014 06:25

0.4lb off for me despite far too much cheese and cappuccinos/cups of tea with milk and some motorway services burgers (minus the bun). Have a horrible sore throat now so no doubt will end up having more tea than ideal. I might try to übercamp to make up for it. I don't like fruit teas though I could be brave and have tea without milk.

BIWI, it's so tricky when away especially for work where you don't want to look too strange I suppose. And in another country too, I'd be clueless.

Pisci that is really interesting as so much official advice seems to push artificial food

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/03/2014 06:41

Aujourd'hui, je ne vais pas être une twat de les carbs.

Have une bonne day toutes

Brew
BIWI · 12/03/2014 06:45

Eh bien. Un autre jour un autre dollar, n'est-ce pas?

Je croix que je will have to be une twat des carbs aussi. Mais il n' y a rien I can do about it.

Bonne journée mes petits choux-fleurs!

Twat des carbs: Grin

Kefybaby · 12/03/2014 07:48

Crabby, thanks for the info on low GI. I am looking into the south beach diet which is low GI and developed by a cardiologist. I have added some more nuts and fruit to my diet and cut down on dairy and fatty meat, until I catch up with the reading and decide which way to go. I have to say, the hunger has come straight back! Sad It is true that carbs make you crave more carbs. Someone needs to hide the almond butter jar for me!!
