Thanks Sponge, she does need to become more independent, hopefully it will be OK and she will feel good about it when she has done it by herself iyswim. One of the reasons I have said no is because I hate driving in motorway and city traffic at rush hour. Bit of a phobia on my part rather than I cannot be bothered.

Def needs to go on her own. My friends all run round after their kids so much, and I feel that doing it yourself is very very important for growing up.

Seriously though - I was getting a train every day to college from the age of 16, and I see mates dropping their 17/18yr olds off 5 mins up the road daily!! I used to get myself to different cities for concerts, I did one uni open day by myself. They were all v important experiences imo.

I think I was overly indulged tbh, which makes me much more determined that the DSs are able to do stuff on their own. For ex, I've allowed DS1 to go to local shopping centre (10 mins by bus) with his mates since age of 11.

Conversely I wasn't allowed to go anywhere - other than school - til I was 15/16

tbh i think it's down to where you live and your situ
i know where adams' lives so can appreciate her circs
i was fortunate enough to go out all day with my friends and return for dinner,my/our parents didn't worry,why should they?
i take this same view with mine, tho sadly they don't live in the same neighbourhood as i did at their ages and don't have kids their own age to play/hang out with

We were overprotected too, i've made a real effort not to do that with DS and he has more freedom than I did at his age. I don't have a car, so he has to be more independent.

I was a bit like you, hate, anywhere outside school that I wanted to go my parents took me and picked me up. I think it was so they could check up on me... it backfired though, I went off the rails as soon as I left home and never completely got back on them again!

She got off OK, I did get up to see her off. Tried to get back to sleep but have birds nesting outside my bedroom window. What a racket, so need a builder to come and stop them.

I don't mind driving her places if I can and she is getting used to buses and taxis. Even went to London with a mate her age at 15 but this was a daunting trip on her own onto the unknown.

Decided to fizzle it out with EV. He is very nice and I tried to change type but on reflection should stick to type or forget the whole of the male species until someone knocks on my door. Now whatever happened to the sexy salesman.

dd1 is 19 today!

her father didnt even send a card, he called when i was out with ds2 having a wheelchair review, and said he would get her something when he has money

ds2 is still waiting for the elusive birthday gift since feb, as his father keeps telling him he had to spend his money on other stuff

i have also asked him to remove himself from dd2's fb as she is uncomfortable with some of his updates (she asked me to broach the topic), as she doesnt want to see him talking about young girls with firm caramel skin

anyway i made dd1 the biggest ever cake, if you are on my fb you can see it there

i have promised to pay for that and a few lessons to see if she likes it, then somehow i will have to find the cash to make it happen

funny how i am also struggling with money but i am able to budget for things like their birthdays, it isnt like he didnt know it was coming ffs

i am taking the route of telling him he can say what he likes if the kids cant see it, as it isnt my business, and it is a good example of why you shouldnt have your kids on fb
