RE: the list above, there's at least one 'mexican' who posts sometimes, methinks possibly due to have a baby any moment. i haven't been on 'mainland' mn threads for a long time, but I think she posts on the 'only child' thread a bit, and sometimes here. Don't want to leave her, or any other out, so I hope no-one feels excluded if they're not listed.

We had a nice day. Went to my parent's house on the lake for swimming and kayaking then had bbq, twinkie cake (an annual tradition) and a nap.

Weirdly they did fireworks on Friday and I think there are more tomorrow but no big official display today

yeah, our fireworks were on fri, so we had a happy 3rd! dh got let out of work early, about 12.30. the big park that had fireworks had a band playing, huge bouncy castle things for kids, a climbing wall, all sorts going on. we met with friends & sat round drinking, chatting, listening to music. a bit like a festival. sadly, teh toilets were also a bit like a festival!

yanks call ALL sparkling wine 'champagne' they are the ONLY country I have come across which doesn't adhere to the international agreement, that only the champagne region can create champagne. not quite sure why.

you can get french champagne, but it's vv expensive.

I remember a very patrinising 'friend' when I first arrived in the US who would speak to me very s l o w l y and LOUDLY to make sure I understood him. He said, "Now, this is a kind of cheese. CHEESE. We call it C H E D D A R. Do you know what Cheddar is?" I didn't like to tell him that, not only am I familiar with the cheese but also with the town from which it originates. Bless him!

Did you know that Stilton isn't from Stilton? It was, apparently, made in Leicestershire & sold at the Bell in Stilton, which it then got it name from. If ever you're near it, THAT's agood pub to go to!

is this the new thread for those who have moved to the states??? hope so. have just moved from london to austin texas. i'm originally a yankee but have lived in london for so long that i'm totally a fish out of water.

there doesn't seem to be any mumsnet equivalent over here. are there any good online communities? promise i'm not a total sad-o, do have a few real friends. maybe one or two;-) just missing mumsnet but also don't really feel too connected now that i'm in the states.

Really enjoyed the fireworks over San Diego last night - and Craig Ferguson doing the CBS show afterwards from Boston. Does anyone else have a bit of a giggle that they have 'Ere we go, ere we go, ere we go' as a 'patriotic song' here?

carmensandiego - the national anthem is the same tune as 'god save the queen'....

I heard it was also the tune of a British drinking song.

Oh, that's 'My country tis of thee' - I stared in horror when I first saw all these Americans singing it misty-eyed.

I think the national anthem is The Star Spangled Banner though. Which to my ear sounds a bit like 'We wish you a merry Christmas' at the end.
