I think it's doing better than it did 2 years ago, but that's not saying much.

The trouble is, I suppose, that a chat forum wants to reflect the views of all its members. I am still reeling from the fact that almost half of respondents disagreed with my AIBU that the "pro-Pal" protests yesterday should have been stopped.

On the plus side, I am no longer being hounded and bullied across forums and threads by posters who scare the fucking shit out of me, and intelligent voices are not immediately silenced the way they once were.

Edited

Do you think some of them voted against not stopping protests because on principal they disagree with banning protests? But still realise that it was beyond hateful to march yesterday and think people should have had the decency to not march?

I’m glad you’re not being hounded any more. Crazy that it was allowed to happen at all

Yes, there was an element of "but freedom of speech" etc, there always is.

However, there was a substantial proportion spouting the usual.

Pastelpoppy · 08/10/2025 23:18

Thank you @EllaDisenchanted

I do feel a slight shift after the horrors of the Manchester attack. I just hope it’s not temporary. There was support after October 7th but it completely disappeared. The protestors showed themselves up yesterday and I think more people are seeing through it.

@Beachtastic well done on that thread 👏 so sorry you have been hounded.

Reporting for duty. Thanks for the new thread, @EllaDisenchanted.

Not that it’s comparable to the harassment others have received, but I’ve been called a warmonger after posting on those threads.

Reposting from the antisemitism thread.

Also to add from the news thread
negotiators have been told there are 20 hostages alive. Hamas have confirmed that 7-15 bodies have been lost during the conflict and they are unlikely to be found. They are asking for more time.

BeretInParis · 08/10/2025 23:25

Those poor, poor people. They’re going to need so much support. And their families too.

stomachamelon · 08/10/2025 23:28

They have agreed to release all living hostages in one go.(eve with Simchat Torah) This will be officially announced on Friday to coincide with Nobel Peace Prize. Trump, Rubio have been asked to attend in Egypt.

EllaDisenchanted · 08/10/2025 23:35

I got laid into for talking about examples of antisemitism on the thread about starmer and Palestine. I said it’s been downplayed and minimised, and I had the usual criticising Israel is not antisemitism line thrown at me. Tried to explain my point that this line is being used to dismiss very real and dangerous antisemitism but it was totally misunderstood (willfully?) and then the whole thing is just repeated ad nauseum. I’m so unbelievably sick of the misrepresentation of antisemitism as just being criticism of Israel. It’s so damaging.

Ive noticed it seems to be ratcheting up on other threads too. downplaying antisemitism by basically insinuating that Jews consider all criticism of Israel to be antisemitism, therefore I assume we are to infer that the high number of antisemitic abuse we are reporting is really actually inflated bc a lot of that is just criticism of Israel… so the marches aren’t really doing harm, the Jews are crying wolf… and anyway somehow of course it’s Israel/Netanyahu’s fault…

Hamas can off 🤬

eve of simchat torah?!? So exactly two years to the day. They could release them NOW.

Thank you @EllaDisenchanted for the new thread. I'm starting on this one with new hope, I've got so many things crossed for the release of the hostages and a peace deal I resemble a pretzel.

But then they wouldn't have enough time to feed them lots of rice between now and then so they look bloated and well-fed rather than emaciated. That's presumably why they've been dragging their feet all week.

Here’s a fabulous opinion piece in the WSJ tonight from a Palestinian who opposes Hamas and welcomes Trump’s peace plan.

Thank you so much for posting. I went to bed just as the news was trickling through last night hardly daring to hope. The cruel agony of waiting till next week though.

Local chat updates are saying the agreement should be signed by 12 today, then Israeli government need to vote on it, and then home in 48 hrs. *Not MSM and not a confirmed source but usually fairly accurate.

Yes, its looking good. Lets dare to hope!

Just woken up to news of the deal.

Please let it be so!

It rained in Israel this morning, the first rain of the year, which is considered to be a blessing. Let us hope that all the talk of an agreement actually happens and the hostages are returned to their families as soon as possible. We have neighbours whose son was confirmed killed as a hostage and they are desperate for his body to be returned so they can have a funeral

How agonising for them. My heart goes out to them and all the families of the hostages not coming home alive.

stomachamelon's post says* *

'Hamas have confirmed that 7-15 bodies have been lost during the conflict and they are unlikely to be found.
They are asking for more time.'

bollocks is putting it politely.

Nobody looses something so special that has been held onto for that length of time, and to not give a precise number - bollocks again.

On a more positive note, I look forward to their release I so hope it happens sooner rather than later.

PurpleThistle7 · 09/10/2025 08:05

I have no idea why but after years of ignoring or rising above I have spent way, way too long arguing with strangers on the internet this week. I think I’ve hit my limit with it and I’m too tired to pretend anymore.

I am staring at the news waiting for noon.

The absolute cruelty of losing ‘7-15’ bodies is freezing me in place a bit. Surely they know if it’s 7 or 10 or 15. Those poor families. We are having friends round this weekend to build our sukkah (we live in Scotland so can’t have it up for a week or it would blow to bits!) and I’m struggling to find the joy in it all.
