I think TSH's approach is of course best - a strong objective response, however I think that none of us are saints and DP's emotive statements bring out people's emotions.

I think it is hard to hold people up to such high standards of objectivity when vile and personally upsetting comments are being made. We are all human.

Also the toddler part of me wants to stamp my feet and ask why you don't hold DP to the same standards? Her comments are hardly objective and can not be described as constructive or robust debate!! Is DP a 'cause' of yours?

However, as I said earlier, I agree that childishness or bullying not really the answer either (although I can see why posters resort to it).

I don't know, Lenin. daftpunk reminds me of my MIL. Xenophobic, homophobic, and justifies it all with Catholicism. I have tried and tried for years to change her mind on so many issues and have had to just accept at the end of the day, that I am banging my head off a brick wall. And dp has upset you so much time after time I don't honestly know how you have the fortitude to put up with it.

Actually, I think you are right that it shouldn't go unchallenged. I do think that part of the trouble with MIL is that her own DC's never challenged her. She can be very aggressive when challenged so I think they just wanted a quiet life! And I have to say that I do challenge MIL each and every time even though I know there is zero chance of her changing her mind and that in her opinion she is expressing Jesus' views.

I am still at aloss as to why DP reports posts/posters which are simple replies to her vile opinions.She assumes MN is full of 'liberal fascists'(she coined that phrase)so she only gets the response she expects.I hope she will get fed up and sod off to one of the right wing boards which surely exist where she can chat with like minded people

I know this is not the consensus view, but if you don't want to be offended, don't go to see Franky Boyle, or Jimmy Carr, or Chubby Brown, or Hale and Pace, or Jim Davidson, or David Cameron. Don't give them your money and don't take any thing they say seriously, they tell jokes for a living.
