Frankie Boyle on Down Syndrome - horrific

interesting blog post from a mother of a DS daughter who was blasted by a 5-10 minute diatribe containing all the old stereotypes about people with DS at a Frakie Boyle show. I'm turning off any TV show he's on in future.

blog here

Grauniad article on it here

loved his humour, how dry he is, how nasty he is, how clever he is

So it's good that he is nasty until its about something that has affected her DC is it?

She's not intelligent or articulate at all. She went to see a show that she knew would be offensive then complained that she was offended, yes, that's really intelligent.

Frankie Boyle dealt with this situation badly and I don't find making fun of children with Downs Syndrome funny at all. He was absolutely out of order but this woman is just plain daft and a hypocrite.

LadyBlaBlah · 08/04/2010 19:50

I find all this Carr/Boyle humour voyeurism rubber necking like humour - we are all very shocked by it, but have to keep watching and can't turn away but really it adds nothing to our lives, and nothing would be lost by never seeing it.

As someone on the blog has commented - his jokes about cancer, paedophilia, race etc are equally as offensive to many many people.

I have very little sympathy for someone paying to go and see bigots like Boyle. I am not sure he is clever, rather he is oblivious of social norms and has no empathy (which makes him somewhere on the psychopath scale !)

RunawayWife · 08/04/2010 20:04

Reading Alan Carrs biography at the moment and he comes across as a real bitch

nickytwotimes · 08/04/2010 20:05

I'm not sure how I feel about this tbh.
I think purpleprincess has a point wrt offensive is fine so long as it isn't offensive to me, etc.
The mother handled herself very well and FB didn't by this account, but he does sound like he is aware he made a complete cunt of himself.

NonnoMum · 08/04/2010 20:11

He is perhaps the least funny comedian around today. And offensive. And seemingly completely unlikeable.
70s blokey humour at its worst.

tethersend · 08/04/2010 20:11

Frankie Boyle is the poor man's Jerry Sadowitz anyway.

Littlepurpleprincess is right, it's all funny until the humour affects something close to your heart.

That's why Jerry Sadowitz is funnier- he offends everybody. It's just fairer that way.

tethersend · 08/04/2010 20:15

Good god, though; let's be reasonable here- whatever Frankie has said and done, there's no need to turn to Michael cunting MacIntyre.

Paint drying is also not offensive, and a damn site funnier than he is- I would rather watch that any day.

nickschick · 08/04/2010 20:16

I think any comedian who has to rely on sick jokes like this are really scraping the barrel.

I went right off Ricky Gervais after his M.E jokes despite previously really 'getting' his humour.

That's probably all Jimmy Carr can say in his own defence - he's equally offensive to all. It's the scattergun approach to offensive comedy.

tethersend · 08/04/2010 20:19

No, not Jimmy Carr- Jerry Sadowitz.

Jimmy Carr steals his jokes and waters them down too.

pagwatch · 08/04/2010 20:19

Good humour can be edgy - it can make you challenge your own views, shine a light on stuff society doesn't want to talk about, laugh at your own weaknesses - it can be offensive and great at the same time.

But laughing at how a person with Down syndrome may speak just makes you a cunt.

I had to switch off the comedy marathon that was on the other night for Great Ormand Street...

Great cause - but by God the jokes were ALL THE SAME - sexist, male comics nobbing up to each other harhar - even Jo Brand did a joke about being a WIFE is Washing, Ironing etc. It's like feminism never happened.

Battle of the sexes - YAWN.

And this is much worse...
And good on her for saying something....

MinaTannenbaum · 08/04/2010 20:24

I hate Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr. I found Sharon's blog interesting and her dd is beautiful, but like purpleprincess I find the whole scenario a bit hypocritical. If people keep paying for tickets to Frankie Boyle, it validates his views on people with disabilities. Why go and see such a bigoted ignoramus in the first place?

cuddlysoutheastastra · 08/04/2010 20:24

of course you can, vic and bob and harry hill!

i really can't stand comedians atm and especially the countless quiz shows they seem to endlessly make.

bog off the lot of you and make me laugh again

i still think comedy is being hi-jacked by middle class boys who should get a proper job and stop trying to be 'controversial'

tethersend · 08/04/2010 20:25

You can, Riven. But you can also be funny and be offensive.

As long as it's not me you're offending, of course

notnowbernard · 08/04/2010 20:27

I've never found him remotely entertaining tbh. And hate MTW for that reason. Full of male tosspots full of their own self-importance (though the young Bristolian is alright)

Hate Jimmy Carr with equal passion and his laugh makes me want to boil my own head

DuelingFanjo · 08/04/2010 20:33

What MrsForHowLong said.

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/04/2010 20:34

Oh he fucked up big time there, didn't he?

Why did his agent say he had no comment?

He should have apologised unreservedly.

Twat.

TotalChaos · 08/04/2010 20:41

frankie boyle, for example, is a twat.

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/04/2010 20:56

Not funny at all. He is an obnoxious twat isn't he.

However, the Guardian articel quotes the mother: " I'm a comedy fan, so is my husband, we see a lot of stand-up. I was even ready for some jokes about disability, and decided I'd try to ignore them."

Bit of an odd statement I think. So she would let any pisstake of any other disabilities or syndromes slide.

That comedy marathon the other night was complete crap.

PortBlacksandDweller · 08/04/2010 21:03

It was wasn't it Getorf - i nearly started a thread about it then couldn't be arsed...

claig · 08/04/2010 21:05

Boyle is scum. He is lauded and feted and put on TV, that is why people fall for the obnoxious twat, follow the crowd and think he is funny. Cruel jokes like that show what an insensitive, arrogant, heartless, poisonous snake he is.

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/04/2010 21:05

Oh good Port glad it wasn't just me.

Thought there would be an onslaught of people saying that I had got it all wrong etc.
