Absolutely shocking attack at the Heaton Park Synagogue in Crumpsall North Manchester. My heart goes out to all those hurt and affected by this terrible atrocity.

You still haven’t posted any links. All you keep saying is ‘they said’. Who is they?

As I’ve repeatedly said, it may well turn out to be an Islamist attack, but for people to say they have seen it confirmed in the media and then admit it was just an assumption is just wrong.

Look what happened at Southport.

Wait for confirmation from the police, it shouldn’t be long. Looks like the police investigation is going to be very thorough.

Anyway, this is the third time you’ve posted to me, the thread will fill up quickly at this rate.

@nomasIt’s more than an assumption. It’s a simple inference anyone would make from the picture of the suspect, the MO (bombs, car ramming) the likelihood of who would do this combined with the reporting use of the word terrorism and the ethnicity/religion of the victims.

Wait for confirmation by all means, but don’t use your pedantry to derail from the conversation on the very real problem of Islamist terrorism.

That's lovely. I was listening to LBC earlier and one of the callers said she was Jewish and that she felt really alone

To any Jewish Mumsnetter reading this, there are plenty of us thinking of you and your community aswell today

I did earlier, too. And I've just made my donation to CST: https://cst.org.uk

CST – Protecting Our Jewish Community

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/10/2025 20:40

I hope that everyone gets behind the Jewish communities because they will be terrified today. They need our assurances that they will be protected

Very much with you on the sentiment, @Livelovebehappy, but it seems a bit cruel to offer assurances in the full knowledge that the words are empty

Were it otherwise the various marches - today of all days - would never have been allowed to go ahead

Tortielady · 02/10/2025 20:38

It might be further, but it isn't very long, compared with some Black Bristolians who can trace their family's history back to the 18thc, or white Londoners who can go back to the Huguenots. Lots of children meet their great-grandparents; there is no way someone from the 16th-18th centuries could hang around for that long!

I have a Jewish friend who can trace her family's history in what is now Germany, back to the 1500s.
Needless to say, that came to an end in the 1930s.

I am just incredulous. Sometimes, with misplaced optimism, I look for placards calling for the release of the hostages, or some such peaceful statement. I look in vain.

Thank you, that's a great idea. I feel the need to do something, but didn't know how I could help. I'll send a donation.

People in the West certainly knew ahead of time. Look how quickly groups mobilised against Israel. Then within days of the war starting the genocide rhetoric started up. It was orchestrated. And marches usually take place on a Saturday. Maybe the march was planned today because people knew of an attack ahead of time or because it is Yom Kippur?

Other marches have been planned to deliberately inconvenience Jews, such as planning their route to go straight past a synagogue just as worshippers are leaving, like in Hove

Yes I think people are extraordinarily naive if they don’t realise that these marches have not been organised with the purpose of saving children but they’ve been organised by people who think dead children are acceptable collateral damage to stir up enough hatred of Jews and Israel to make them fearful. The marches are orchestrated to intimidate Jews and stir up anti semitism.

So much history lost to hatred and death cultists - and it was just one family. What happened to them was repeated all over Germany, Poland and elsewhere in Europe. 💔

My family's tenure in Britain only goes back to the late 19th century and my Russian great-grandparents. My DM, who vaguely remembers her DGM says the old lady couldn't speak a word of English. Like many Anglo-Jewish people, I don't take my roots in Britain for granted and it's just as well. We could very easily become outsiders again.

This is pretty much my family history too, well on my father's side. It seems to be coded into DNA to be watchful.

Not the time or place for any political point scoring or opinions

No, no it’s not. It’s a shame most of the thread seems to now consist of this.

Yes dear jews, please cry neatly and shove off after your allocated two minutes. You cannot discuss politics here.

nomas · 02/10/2025 20:48

miraxxx · 02/10/2025 20:36

Whitewashing. That's the trouble with jews :too white, too clever, too rich, too democratic, too western. Not exotic enough with quaint customs like in Afghanistan where a rat has more freedom than a female.
You are doing sterling service on this thread @Nomas Not spitting mad like the rest of your gang, more clinical. It is a choice to be on this thread isnt it? Policing it in case whitewashing occurs.

I don’t think this is the thread to discuss the Israel / Palestine situation.

But it also doesn’t mean people should be silenced with only one view allowed on the subject.

You’ve done what people have always said not to do, which is conflating Israel with all Jews.

Jujujudo · 02/10/2025 20:48

nomas · 02/10/2025 20:26

I don’t think this is the thread for this, but not sure white washing Israel helps. The situation in Israel is discrete.

I don’t care about your opinion thanks. I know your intention and it certainly isn’t compassion and solidarity for the Jews.

I gave up hoping for that kind of thing long ago, @MrsEmmelineLucas Sad

As mentioned upthread I completely accept that some attend these things out of honest and decent principle, either unable or unwilling to understand they're being used as useful idiots for a malign cause, but I did have a brief hope that they'd be prevented today of all days

Of course I have sympathy and compassion for what happened today.

I’m not the one who made this about Israel, that was you.

Oh come on nomas, just give it a rest for a few hours.

This is not the time for this.

Anyone marching in London or Manchester, today of all days, is a fucking scumbag.

The british people are not stupid and will draw their own conclusions from what they see on the streets.

There are fireworks going off here tonight. There were also fireworks here on October 7th 2023. It's so utterly depressing.

That’s disgusting. I despair 🤦‍♀️

Time for MN to pull this thread.

Innocent British citizens were murdered in cold blood today. People who were visiting their place of worship and welcoming the Jewish New Year.

It's so sad that Palestine supporters would want use this space for their political agenda.

What are you replying to the right one.

This is not the time for this.

I ignored one poster until they tagged me 3 times due to no response from me.

I think you should tell everyone to give it a rest and not derail.

Anyway, another depressing day in the UK. I hope there are no more days like this.
