Civil unrest, what's really going on?

1000 replies

Sadworld23 · 03/08/2025 17:02

My DH keeps chirping up with, there's riots here, protests there, immigrants have done assaults in xxx etc. He sees me as a bit of a do-gooder..

All UK places, but when I look at my regular news, there's very little reporting of it.

My DH has some MH issues currently and to confront him with 'what the heck are you reading?' isn't worth it right now.
I make comments such as, ooh that sounds grim and doesn't sound good, and that's very worrying, but I'd really like to know if it's really happening and where he's getting this info.

Ok if that’s Labour’s line go with it, relying on this won’t do much, so stick with that. Most recognise the numbers are indeed up.

The numbers aren’t up. Net migration has halved since its peak in 2023. What was the government doing about it then? Oh, I remember, spending 750 million paying Rwanda for an illegal scheme that didn’t deport a single person.

Figures aren't yet in for the year... because the year hasn't concluded... its not a difficult concept...

Lets see how the UK / French deal works.

Funny hearing Badenoch "This deal wont work, its only 50 per week.... Our deterrent was 300 per year....."

EasternStandard · 05/08/2025 13:12

If they’re higher at this point people will see that and articles will cover it. Labour won’t like that but so what

They’re not higher. Biggest decline on record.

Figures are always based on a per year amount.... now obviously you want to pick a moment in time and run with that but you re being disingenuous.

Net migration down from 1m per year under Sunak to 400k under Labour.... Good news yes???

....or is your schooner still half empty??

It’ll be a cold day in hell before that particular poster ever says anything a Labour government does is good news!

Ik you likely avoid any non Labour stuff but if you have an issue with headlines on figures write to the journos.

Nope again, you posted it, i'm taking issue with you distorting the figures for your own political view.... but no surprise there, as said, you can never bring yourself to praise Labour nor can you ever criticise the Tories.

Most posters can see good and bad in both, i can be critical of Labour and can praise the Tories too.

Is the Migration Observatory Labour? I’m sure it would be news to them.

Fine if you really do just stay on mn and avoid the press here’s a chart for you showing where we are now with numbers.

Wow... so numbers lower than in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024

What were the Tories doing?

EasternStandard · 05/08/2025 13:33

People really do stick to Labour threads on mn.

On that note I hope Labour keep going as they are. It’s great and causing no issues.

Compare numbers over a 12 month period, as per your chart you helpfully posted.

Student visa rules have been changed, they can no longer bring dependents with them. I think labour brought this rule in but not sure. It’s has a massive impact on overseas students numbers at universities who are now struggling financially.

Tories brought in those rules. Kept by labour as they are working to reduce numbers.

Has 25K crossing been reached at the earliest point in the year since records began in 2018?

Its just a point in time, thats all, we will know if numbers exceed previous crossings at the year end... as per the pp graph.

Lets hope Labours french deal slash crossings and we get a lower overall total.... for ALL of 2025...

I feel sure you'll start a new thread praising Labour .....

Just as well HMRC don't base tax bills on what is earn 't in the first 6 months of the year isn't it?

You probably have to be this loyal to Labour to not notice tbf.

I think it’s great if Labour advisors are saying similar though, don’t worry it’s not year end we’re fine.

It’s immaterial. The numbers in 2023 according to that chart were relatively low, yet net immigration was at its peak and double the current level. It will be interesting to see where they are in five months time.

25K at the earliest point in the year on record is a fact.
You can deny it all you like, its still a fact.

Farage on what he sould do to stop small boat crossing yesterday

"Within two weeks you won't see a single migrant boat, they won't come,"

Mind, he doesn't explain how.

Remind you of something, someone?

You can only say this is the worst year at the end of it. You’re assuming the rise in numbers will stay on the same trajectory for the next five months - at least two of which are winter months with bad weather.
