Civil unrest, what's really going on?

Sadworld23 · 03/08/2025 17:02

My DH keeps chirping up with, there's riots here, protests there, immigrants have done assaults in xxx etc. He sees me as a bit of a do-gooder..

All UK places, but when I look at my regular news, there's very little reporting of it.

My DH has some MH issues currently and to confront him with 'what the heck are you reading?' isn't worth it right now.
I make comments such as, ooh that sounds grim and doesn't sound good, and that's very worrying, but I'd really like to know if it's really happening and where he's getting this info.

Who? Don’t be shy now.

Brexit, Trump

Don't worry, I don't think you would believe his nonsense

It’s immaterial. The numbers in 2023 according to that chart were relatively low, yet net immigration was at its peak and double the current level. It will be interesting to see where they are in five months time.

I dont agree that it's immaterial, but I understand why someone who fiercely advocated for this government would want to deflect away from what's actually happening on their watch.

I also think these numbers are affecting Labour's rhetoric on immigration. Starmer is becoming more right-wing by the day in his messaging.

25K at the earliest point in the year on record is a fact.
You can deny it all you like, its still a fact.

It is. Does it really matter what is glossed over on mn anyway. The reality for Labour is in the polls and streets.

Do you deny that net migration under Labour is less than half what it was under the Tories & Sunak?

Would you like to explain why it has fallen? Happy to do it for you (again) if you like?

Its not about being pro Lab, its about how stats are calculated, on immigration, ts done per year, always has been always will be.

If numbers by year end are the highest recording then fine, we can all have a go but atm we simply cannot say.

If you followed MN at all, you'd know that both myself and Blossomes do not advocate for Labour, both highly critical.

Its a pity you and the pp cannot be more balance too.

So its fallen, thats all that matters..... bit like you cherry picking a stat in mid year and running with it.... goose and gander.....

Well done Labour!!

EasternStandard · 05/08/2025 14:22

It’s fine, if Labour posters want to say it’s all going well on immigration issues then go for it.

Maybe the Labour party feel similarly.

DuncinToffee · 05/08/2025 14:23

The current asylum system is a Tory legacy, it can't be fixed instantly. Not by Labour, not by the Tories and definitely not by Reform

What with the badgering? You’re doing well and still it’s not enough. Enjoy, everything’s fine.

True.... not reported on widely by our MSM

Business confidence edged up by 1 point to 52% in July, marking the third consecutive monthly increase and the highest level since November 2015. This continued upward trend reflects a growing sense of optimism across the UK economy, underpinned by improved trading prospects and a rebound in broader economic sentiment. Economic optimism, in particular, rose to an eleven-month high, recovering from April’s decline which had been driven by concerns over global trade tariffs

Lloyds Business confidence survey July 2025.

TheNuthatch · 05/08/2025 14:36

In previous conversations, you have conceded that the policies to reduce dependents were introduced by Sunak/Cleverly. You know that is true, and you went on to question the efficacy of reducing dependents. You didn't think it was necessarily a good thing.
Why the change of stance? I am happy to credit Labour again for keeping those policies.
I know that you are not happy with how Labour have performed, but it is true that you were one of many posters on MN who were fiercely advocating for Starmer and co to take power.

Poor Labour, maybe they have a comms spot going.

Yes we couldn't carry on with the destruction of the country under the Tories...

The latest to come out is the state of the prisons system, close to total collapse in 23/24.... a COBRA meeting held.

Stabilised under Labour.

Whatever ones political views, no one can say the last 14 years have been in anyway a success.

Maybe try being more optimistic? can lead to a longer and happier life.

That was to blossomtoes.
If you're about to launch into another massive anti-tory rant, I'll leave you to it.
I'd rather discuss the actual government currently in power.

I’m fine thanks.

You do a good job posting for them, maybe better comms would help.

Oh i thought you liked to talk about what Sunak and Cleverly did.....

Sorry my bad!!!

I bet you would, considering the mess they left the country in.

FTSE record highs...again.... under the present Govt.....

That makes me laugh:

'Despite the sharp decline, net migration remained well above pre-Brexit peak of roughly 300,000.'

Wasn't Brexit supposed to save us all from 'the foreigners'?

By the looks of it much of the 'sharp decline' is due to students (and their dependents) emigrating or not coming here to study at all - leaving our universities right in the shit.

Our governments are just fantastic at shooting us in the foot aren't they. I wonder how many millions they can pay out to the French to do fuck all.

At least it gives all our violent thugs something to smash, loot and burn our towns and cities over though. So all good really.

BIossomtoes · 05/08/2025 17:17

I certainly was because I wanted the previous government gone. I’m disappointed with this one but I’d take it over its predecessor any day of the week.

Uni's shouldn't be reliant on international students.

Why can't we fund this sector properly? its vital for future growth of the UK, other countries manage it and with almost zero Tuition fees.

Of course Brexit would mean higher migration, we swapped a single person coming here to work, for a family from a developing country, who will stay.

So would I. I don’t want Reform. But that’s what we’re going to get because this issue simply isn’t being dealt with.
