Civil unrest, what's really going on?

1000 replies

Sadworld23 · 03/08/2025 17:02

My DH keeps chirping up with, there's riots here, protests there, immigrants have done assaults in xxx etc. He sees me as a bit of a do-gooder..

All UK places, but when I look at my regular news, there's very little reporting of it.

My DH has some MH issues currently and to confront him with 'what the heck are you reading?' isn't worth it right now.
I make comments such as, ooh that sounds grim and doesn't sound good, and that's very worrying, but I'd really like to know if it's really happening and where he's getting this info.

Prison spare capacity in 2023 and 24 dropped to just 100 place, a COBRA meeting called by the Tories on what to do if the prison/justice system broke down during the General Election....

Now we know why they called the election when they did.....

Deport to where? Many countries will not accept returns or its not safe to fly there & should we return to say Afghanistan or Iran and then find the migrant was thrown off a building?

All these so called easy answers, are nothing of the sort.

The Rwanda scheme can be dusted down. It’s currently being considered by several European countries including Germany. Anyone not wishing to return to their home country can be flown to Rwanda.

We are building new prison estates now. I expect them to be finished in some areas quite soon. Capacity did peak. It is easing slightly in some areas, but we are still having to move defendants up and down the country more often than we should.

There are easy answers if you have the courage and the motivation.

What is the alternative? See the country go up in flames?

Plus if we remove all people from other countries from our schools/health service it would collapse. Plus you won’t be getting your take aways/amazon deliveries.

Why do you think the Govt didn't crack down very hard on illegal work in the food delivery industry, operating out of hotels etc....

Don't want to wreck the food industries business model or deny the pop. their take a ways!!

Ah, so it’s mostly Pakistan and Iran deporting them. I wonder if they will now be called racist and Islamophobic as well?

Yes it's interesting isn't it. Iran and Pakistan are predominantly Sunni muslim so possibly that's a reason behind not liking the mainly Shia muslim Afghans. I don't know, just a guess.

They are, plus the US is looking at it too. We voted it out, they’ll benefit.

One of the sickest crimes I’ve read about was a white male emigrating to the Philippines - and abusing children there. It’s not just one culture who commit appalling crimes.

Just because white males are capable of committing appalling crimes is that an argument to allow large numbers of unvetted fighting age men from countries with different cultural attitudes to women and girls? I don’t understand the logic in your argument here.

If the NHS is illegally employing migrants without visas to the extent that it collapses then we have even more problems than we think.

No one on this thread is talking about immigrants who have visas and contribute to society.

Here's more on the forced deportation of Afghans out of Pakistan. This includes women, too.

The fact I would happily accept women, particularly from Afghanistan, is going to uncomfortable for the ‘you’re so racist’ accusers among us.

Iran take most asylum seekers globally already. 3.8 million. So if we want to object, do they not have the right to?

FractionalKrispie · 05/08/2025 10:00

sorry I misread nesting birds post as stop all immigration

The US deal is for a max of 250 migrants only, the initial number is 10.....

Wowzers!!

The US can of course tell any country refusing to take migrants that they'll be hit with super high tariffs.....

‘Wowsers’ indeed. We’re seeing other countries act on this whilst we vote against.

...yeah yeah but they aren't, you're just making stuff up....

No European country has "acted" to send migrants to Rwanda, let alone has sent them.

Wowzers!!

I'm interested to see IF the scheme to send back to France will work, a similar scheme between Greece and Turkey in 2016 worked.

I see the Tories are slagging off this 50 per week deal but their own Rwanda scheme was only 300 per year yet would have been a deterrent!!!

Denmark and Poland are getting stricter so you’re incorrect. And Greece is feeling overwhelmed and stopped claims.

Countries are getting more hardline.

All these… !! won’t change that.

No because it’s not about numbers, it’s just racism, remember? Keep up.

PS - Iran has a population density of 57 per sq km. We have 279. And that includes the Highlands of Scotland etc.

Yes they are, as is the UK, BUT thats not Rwanda is it.

Immigration under the Tories - 1m per year, under Labour 400k per year.....

Nice try still some …. though. And visa rules changed pre GE.

On the ‘as is the U.K.’ it’s that why channel crossings are up under Labour?

Where is this? It absolutely should be publicised. Utterly scandalous not to report this in the media. This cowardly government really doesn’t care a lot about their prime responsibility which is the security of their citizens.

You can download them on any smart phone, and I also listen on a DAB2 Roberts radio. Talk TV is on live on any Smart TV. I listen to a wide variety of of news outlets (apart from ITV and BBC as they are both biased); I find Al Jazeera is best for world news, and Mike Graham from 6.30am-10am on Talk Radio/TV, highlights all the shameful things our Gvt hide from us, he gives no shits. Excellent broadcaster and very, very funny at times.

FractionalKrispie · 05/08/2025 11:11

@JamesMacGill

Poverty in Iran is 3 times that of UK - so should that be taken into account when looking at the impact of taking on the world’s highest number of asylum seekers?

FractionalKrispie · 05/08/2025 12:09

The hypocrisy in saying I don’t watch ITV/BBC as it’s biased - yet lauding Mike Graham as having no bias???

Nchangeo · 05/08/2025 12:17

MsAmerica · 05/08/2025 03:16

I just don't understand this, although I know that in America it's a problem for right-wingers sucked into dubious news sources.

I have no problem distinguishing between good sources and bad, and to me it shouldn't be that hard for any rational person. In America, my main sources are the New York Times, and public media TV and radio. I don't know if the London Times is still a good paper, but there is The Economist, the BBC, The Independent, Reuters, etc., all of which seem to be reliable.

I think you are missing the point. This is not just an abstract national news story where people can contribute their opinion pieces.

This is happening in local areas TO local people. At that stage it’s not about good source / bad source. They are there. They are the source. And there’s good representation of it and bad.

Yep, this is happening right across Europe. It can't all be 'dubious news'.

Nestingbirds · 05/08/2025 09:20

Are you struggling with comprehension? I said short visas will still be given to essential staff and students.

But of the 900k people who came in 600k were students (and dependents such as partners and children). If they are studying for Masters, it could be as little as one year but PhD could take a fair number of years. So, how short is the visa?

Essential staff - again how short is the visa?

And no need to be rude - this type of "are you an idiot" rubbish just perpetuates polarised narratives and groups.

Highest yearly crossings were in 2022/23.... 46k, we are at 25k... so no, migrants crossings aren't highest ever.

Not a single European country is sending or has a deal to send migrants to Rwanda, only the US has an agreement for this, 10 initially.....

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 05/08/2025 12:58

Student visa rules have been changed, they can no longer bring dependents with them. I think labour brought this rule in but not sure. It’s has a massive impact on overseas students numbers at universities who are now struggling financially.

Ok if that’s Labour’s line go with it, relying on this won’t do much, so stick with that. Most recognise the numbers are indeed up.
