Jews being hunted on streets of Amsterdam

Horrific footage all over social media of baying mobs hunting down Jews and beating them unconscious on the streets of Amsterdam.

Never again is now. Weak fearful police forces and politicians have allowed this poison to fester all over the western world. Absolute disgraceful scenes on the streets of so called tolerant Europe.

I really have no idea what to even say.

Mlanket · 08/11/2024 05:27

It’s incredibly depressing

Netanyahu sending planes to rescue Jews from Europe. And people criticise Jews for daring to have a homeland.

BBC too busy wetting the bed about Trump to even bother reporting on this.

BBC too busy wetting the bed about Trump to even bother reporting on this.

The BBC is usually a bit slower to report things than other news because they have extra verification steps to ensure factual reporting (e.g., they didn’t report latest dog attack as XL bully until a least a day later than daily mail was quoting neighbours about the dog breed). I am sure they will report this once they have verified.

Summerhillsquare · 08/11/2024 05:47

Oh, Israeli authorities say, do they? Well it must be true then. You'd think their Leader might be too busy invading other countries and handling protests from actual Israelis against him to worry about the Dutch.

GrammarTeacher · 08/11/2024 06:06

It actually seems to have started as football related violence. With Israeli football fans tearing down Palestinian flags in the town and escalated from there.
I abhor anti-semitism and football hooliganism and ethnic cleansing. No one should be hunted through the streets of anyway but this is evidence of a Europe wide attack on Jews.

Tiker · 08/11/2024 06:07

It’s on the Dutch national news and the news agencies, Reuters etc. Israeli football supporters were attacked after the match.

The BBC has a problem with antisemitism and its reporting has a strong anti-Israel bias but they have covered this brutality in graphic detail on the World Service news, including a description of how an Israeli was held under water in the canal and forced to say ‘Free Palestine’.

Israeli football supporters were also involved with disorder before the match and chanting about 'no schools in Gaza' 'no children in Gaza'. This is in several news reports online.
This would seem to be an abhorrent example of football hooliganism on both sides. Totally unacceptable but no proof of increased anti-Semitism in Europe generally. Football hooligans have long been associated with the far right and will contain a number looking for the smallest excuse to commit violence.

boocurl · 08/11/2024 06:20

I’m absolutely against violence and think this is awful but I did see the fans were videoed chanting a genocidal chant so I’m not surprised it has turned violent and innocent people have been caught in the cross fire.

What do you mean by ‘poison spread across Europe’ OP? Do you mean football?

GrammarTeacher · 08/11/2024 06:23

Hooligans will use any excuse. I was reminded today of the ridiculous violence when England lost to Germany in the Semi Finals of Euro 96. Anyone who they assumed was German (included people from all over Europe) was a target.
Footage from Gaza over the past few days shows there is literally nothing left in Northern Gaza. Feelings are running high. And people who like violence are taking advantage of the situation.

NONE of this justifies the actions. But I don't think anyone needs to evacuate Europe.
And I would say a lot more needs to be done by a range of bodies nationally and internationally about football's violence/racism/sexism/homophobia problem AND we need to ensure we stop creating a society where schools and places of worship in this country need guards for safety.

2triangles · 08/11/2024 06:24

For anyone minimising the Amsterdam pogrom remember that what starts with Jewish people won’t end with them.

Artistbythewater · 08/11/2024 06:24

Not a single report on the bbc about this still. It has been verified now - so there is no excuse whatsoever.

The bbc relentlessly release content that supports the pro Palestine movement in various forms, with no effort to balance views. And now this!

This incident is really very serious, given the historical context. I am horrified. I hope the Dutch come down on the perpetrators like a tonne of bricks. This can not be allowed to happen.

It isn't a pogrom. It is football violence.

But schools and places of worship don’t need guards for safety. Be clear about the actual problem. Jewish schools and synagogues need guards for safety. Don’t write Jews out of this because this is about anti-semitism. If we don’t describe the problem accurately, we can’t solve it.

There are plenty of examples, and it has been well documented that anti semitism is indeed very much on the rise. Even here in London.

I deliberately didn't just say Jewish because mosques in some areas do and Catholic primary schools in Northern Ireland have experienced the same. The issue is larger than just anti-semitism.

Mlanket · 08/11/2024 06:32

it’s not a new thing. “Between 2010 and 2019 alone, more than 50 thousands Jews left France to reach Israel.” largely due to antisemitism…

GrammarTeacher · 08/11/2024 06:32

Pythag · 08/11/2024 06:29

it is football violence against Jews.

Against an Israeli team. Who also engaged in hooliganism. And as a team have supporters who have engaged in hooliganism in the past. It is no reason to suggest that all Jews should leave Europe.

GrammarTeacher · 08/11/2024 06:33

All hate crimes are on the rise (which is awful) and will continue to do so.
The violence IS unacceptable. You ignore the bit where I say this. Chanting about dead children is also unacceptable and was done to provoke exactly this response.

You don’t say Jews because you don’t want to talk about antisemitism. Which is what this pogrom is. Instead you somehow want to blame the far right. Who are not the reason why Jewish schools need guards. No other school in England needs guards. Be honest about what the actual problem is.
