Awful 😢 but rather an owner (who chose to take the risk) than a child in the home or a random person who had no choice.

Indeed. Of course it's sad but if you purposely get a dog like that then thats the risk you take I'm afraid.

There was a case a little while ago of a woman loudly declaring on social media that XL bullies are just misunderstood and it was the owner's fault not the dog.

She was soon after killed by her dog.

Are you referring to Nicole Morey?

I cant remember her name, possibly? but I remember it being in the news and it was shocking

Torn apart by her Staffordshire Bull Terrier and her XL Bully, coming home on her birthday after a night out?

Absolutely. Darwinism at work.

Agree

They generally are Staffordshire bull terriers, which are basically just small pitbulls - they all have pit dna, meaning prone to aggression. Even if they are mutts with pit dna, they are enough pit to have this in-bred aggression. If it looks like a pit, be it a small staffordshire, or a larger one, they are more likely to be aggressive. And we can all identify which types they are. Most often with the attacks, photos show they are indeed SBTs or mixes thereof.

Backyard breeding and inbreeding is a massive issue. A pedigree Staffordshire raised appropriately isn't the same as something a chav paid £100 for and added a spikey chain.

I haven't a grain of sympathy for her. I'd quite like a doberman but I have a 10 year old if I couldn't remove it off my child if the worst happened I've no business in owing one! So a cat or a jack Russel basically lol.

A year ago:

"Keir Starmer said his party would likely support a ban. He said: "I think there is a clear case for a ban. Obviously we will see what the Home Secretary comes up with, but people will have seen the footage over the weekend and I don't think anybody can look at that and say everything is fine. He added: "I am in the camp of saying there is a good case for a ban and say to the government, put your proposals on the table and we can probably make progress."

So, Keir, now you got the job, get on with it and do it now.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 22/08/2024 09:53

I definitely think the ban should be updated to include them not being allowed in homes with children.

How can you rationally have a law that (correctly imo) says they should be muzzled in public, but it's totally fine to have them unmuzzled in a house with a child. If they're a danger out in public, they're a danger in the home as well, and a child has no choice in the matter.

(Really I think they should just all be put down, but I'm aware that probably isn't practical, and would provoke an awful lot of whining)

I would consider a true sized staffy as my next dog, generally lovely natured little creatures, but would only consider one now as my children are adult sized, not keen on mixing small people and any dog with terrier added to its name, but that's just me and my experience of terriers of all shapes and sizes, great dogs in the right environment, very loyal, but don't suffer fools gladly and most children will be foolish at some point !

Not half as foolish as their parents

Er, Jack Russells aren't lap dogs! They don't know they're only little - they think they're Staffies! Our one had a very strong jaw and teeth like a shark. Bred for killing rats. There were two Akitas at the other end of our village and he would always want to take them on. Fantastic dogs though, JRTs. Very loyal. We were heartbroken when ours died - he had a huge personality.

I can't understand inviting a creature build like a leopard to live with a child knowing you'd be absolutely powerless if it attacked absolutely insane!!

I have defended myself against a jack Russel so I know that's my limit lol.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 22/08/2024 10:03

@Marseillaise believe it or not social services are involved for other reasons (of course they are) they don't seem concerned about the dog though. I really hate judgemental people but for me that would be one thing I would judge someone on

Cantgetausername87 · 22/08/2024 10:07

I know my HV and midwife asked about dogs before I took my baby home. But banned should mean banned. Put to sleep, as many as they can find. I also believe all dogs should be muzzled in public.
I can't imagine the whining it would cause, dog owners in my local FB group cannot FATHOM why dogs are banned from a children's park, but something needs to be done about Xls and dogs in general IMO...

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 22/08/2024 10:09

I saw a post the other day on one of the articles about an attack from a mother who had young children and three XL Bullies, but that was fine because 'she never left them alone together'. You just can't educate these people that it will make no difference whether they're alone or half the family are there, no-one will be stopping them if they do turn on the children until it's too late.

It's just thick. She must be aware that fully grown men have been brutally killed by these dogs, but she thinks that by being in the same room she could save her child?

Our neighbours have a yappy Jack Russell.
When DH was walking past it shot from under their hedge and had hold of his ankle, it's a vicious little thing. If they were any bigger they'd be on the banned list.

It sounds like that statement was made before the current ban? (I use the word ban loosely, but I think that's what it's called despite not looking much like an actual ban)

Unfortunately, I don't think any politicians are raising the idea of changing the existing ban.

It's likely different for me because I've been into kick boxing and marital arts since my teens I have quick reflexes etc. But I still wouldn't chance a bigger dog around children.

A colleague of mine has a JRT, it has bitten the postal delivery worker, badly enough to need stitches. I know they are small dogs, but they are horribly aggressive, and I don't understand their appeal at all.
Actually, I don't understand why we tolerate the risks from dogs at all.

SerendipityJane · 22/08/2024 10:28

Rinse and repeat, but nothing will happen. Or rather, if it was going to, it would have by now. This is clearly an acceptable level of death, distress and maiming.

If people bringing the country to a standstill for climate change can't affect anything, then what chance would a campaign to ban these beasts face ?

Once a politician's child is mauled by one, maybe then.

We can only hope it's the owners as victims and not random people who never signed upto being around those beasts.

It really is noticeable how ill educated the real bully fans are by their language and spelling.

It's definitely a socio economic problem. Don't think there have been any bully attacks in the likes of Chelsea, Harrogate and Cobham.

why do we tolerate a risk from dogs? Ask search and rescue teams, police, customs, farms, health care and support dogs, the list goes on and on how dogs support us humans.
