Question for any police adjacent commenters here: Are firearms officers trained specifically on the best (most humane and effective) way to deal with an XL? It seems such a regular occurrence now, I’d like to think there is focussed training.

Hopefully, the more owners who are savaged to death, the more these stupid selfish people will be put off owning these killing machines. They clearly don't care about savaging other people, but if it's themselves being torn apart they might sit up and listen.

One might hope so but I doubt it.
Yhey are emotionally bonded to and loyal to the dog, unable to criticize it or speak against it, they will conclude that the person who was killed deserved it because they treated the dog badly or some such thing.

I failed to see the appeal of this breed. They are rather scary looking creature. Wouldn't like to be in the same space as them - is like a ticking timebomb waiting to explode on you.

I'm sure for some people that is the appeal.

Misthios · 21/08/2024 21:08

Shame for his wider family but play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

romdowa · 21/08/2024 21:09

These dogs are like ticking time bombs aren't they? I can't wait until legislation is introduced in Ireland. I've met so many owners here who walk them unmuzzled off lead and just let them approach my toddler. One even encouraged ds to pet her xl and was highly offended when I said no and moved my child away.
They all need to be detained and distroyed tbh.

I know of two people who have them around their tiny children/grandchildren ☹️ the father of three children, two of them babies, has pictures of them with the dog and stuff like “Don’t bully our breed” on his Facebook. He’s a very unpleasant young man in person.

I cringe every time there’s an incident in case it’s someone I know, these dogs are just ticking time bombs. They should all have been put down.

I know of someone who thinks that their absolute tank of a dog knows his place and would never hurt anyone 😬 apparently a lot of play fighting and putting the dog in a headlock is enough to show a dog who the boss is because we all know dogs are rational things and will stop midway to have a word with themselves about not attacking the person they are just about to attack won't they because they will just remember the headlock 😩 they have a toddler who is allowed to climb all over the dog too so that's a news headline waiting to happen.

Frightening!

A young woman posted a long tirade on our local Facebook group last week complaining that people were staring at her and making negative comments about her XL puppy. It doesn't wear a muzzle - apparently something to do with being too young - and people are understandably nervous when they see her approaching. Despite being a puppy, it's pretty large (photo was added to the comments for likes.) Loads of people queued up to defend her and were very very aggressive towards any poster who commented negatively about the dog. Even polite questions were fended off with obscenities. The woman mocked people who complained about the dog not having a muzzle and pointed out that it didn't matter because the dog was on a lead anyway. I hope she muzzles it in future, as a small framed female would have zero chance of holding back a fully grown XL if it was suddenly triggered by something or someone.

Awful 😢 but rather an owner (who chose to take the risk) than a child in the home or a random person who had no choice.

100000000000% rather him than he's neighbour.

The play fighting serves to give the dog a very good sense of exactly how weak & defenceless the human is.
A pet needs to be subordinate, a large powerful predator which can easily overpower & kill you is never going to be a subordinate. The human is the dog's pet/chew toy.

Half the time people with dogs, even small breeds don't train them properly, they have no idea how to read a dogs body language and humanise everything they do it'sridiculousand scary.
The key issue is that THESE dogs are simply unstoppable once things go wrong and the hardware causes fatalities at an almost exclusive degree in comparison to other breeds.

I would support a cull but how would you police that? What would be the parameters?

LouisTherouxattheorgy · 21/08/2024 21:20

Struggling to feel sorry for a bully breeder tbh.

Horrendous creatures and I say that as the owner of a bull breed.

REALLY

I love animals but I'd support it to it's got devil dog energy around it.

SensorySensai · 21/08/2024 21:30

There have been several organised group XL bully walks where I live.

There's a lovely area where I don't walk my dog anymore as the XL bully owners go there as it's quiet and walk their dogs off leash and unmuzzled. These dogs are as vile as their owners.

Gladtobeout · 21/08/2024 21:30

DogsandFlowers · 21/08/2024 21:20

REALLY

There are many different bull breeds. XL bully is just one of them.

For example, Staffys are often called nanny dogs because of their temperament.

Report it honestly now I've never reported anybody in my life but I'd make an exception for that

Do you think? It's a bit of a... low-policed area tbh. I've called police twice (once for a threat to myself, once for the safety of some very drunk lads taking a terrible risk) and they didn't come out either time.

I really really wouid send a report! Because you'd be absolutely devastated if the worst happened! They've been exempt for very good reason. I've never been scared of a dog before but I can't even look at them 🤮

Oh wow read the room dear honestly! Nobody here buys the bullshit in the slightest you are wasting your time.
Only called that by those that own them…funnily enough the owners of those that maul people don’t call them that anymore afterwards 🤔

Dymaxion · 21/08/2024 21:49

A staffy is going to weigh about 12-15kg if exercised and fed properly, an XL bully is double/triple that at least, so that is 64kg of pure muscle or ten stone of pure killing machine if you look at it the wrong way one day, when its inbreeding causes a well documented and known about malfunction !
Humans are rubbish against large predators in general because we haven't needed to be, so we have lots of lovely arteries close to the surface which powerful, teeth filled jaws will puncture easily, or even rip limbs clean off, as has occurred in at least two cases, I have seen in the news.
Looking at my saggy, baggy, elderly, largely toothless labrador cross and wondering why these people don't choose a more benign canine companion ?

MessyBinBags · 21/08/2024 21:54

Lions on a lead

BlackShuck3 · 21/08/2024 21:58

Q Why don't they choose a more benign canine companion?
A The owners are typically people of low educational attainment and low socioeconomic status. They are trapped in a cult echo chamber, unable to think for themselves, offering their throats to their dogs.
