We can only hope it's the owners as victims and not random people who never signed upto being around those beasts.

This is the UKs version of gun control. We won't have it. It will cause riots if you try to regulate it. In fact, speaking of guns you have more chance of liberalising the gun laws to allow people to pack to defend against these beasts than you have of meaningful action.

(That's hyperbole, by the way).

My family in law in an Eastern European country just got a medium sized bully. I’m terrified of it. It’s well raised and they have it under control but it doesn’t like men and kept snaring at DH. It was very well behaved towards DC’s but that was even worse as they thought it was really cute and kept wanting to play with it and touch it. I honestly don’t know what to do next year when we go back, I don’t want DC’s around it at all. It’s one second of things going wrong and they could be disfigured for life.

the worst thing is that the couple who owns it (late twenties) are now trying for a baby! I’m so worried about that dog and a baby in the house. I just don’t get why on earth they’ve got themselves that dog. It’s such a stress factor, wherever they go they have to keep it on the leash and they had to install a camera to monitor their flat ad the dog chews up the carpet etc if left alone for too long. There’s lots of strays in the country and whenever they’re out and about with the dog they have to keep an eye on status not coming near it, and using this device that emits a high pitched sound only dogs can hear to scare of strays if the come
too close. Why would you willingly introduce so much trouble in your life? Why not just get a normal dog?

DingDongDell70 · 22/08/2024 10:57

A jrt killed a very small baby near me a few years ago. All dogs are capable of killing, however, breeding, temperament and training minimise the risk.

Idiot dog owners buying unsuitable breeds from puppy farms and backyard breeders who don’t train their dogs are just asking for trouble.

Carouselfish · 22/08/2024 11:02

Staffies I have known have all been very anti-other dogs. Ones that would bolt from their home to attack any passing dog. Ours included. I hid ours behind me and made myself big and scary to stop it chasing us on a narrow path. Luckily it stopped and finally listened to its frantic owner.
Also anecdotally heard of a two jack russells and a new labrador pup. Owner returned home to find all that was left of labrador was its fur. Also, two jack russells used to go crazy along their fence when I passed with our airedale. The only time I've ever seen him scared.
Re. XLs. Yes, you'd have to be a total moron to want one. The man in OPs story was asked to look after a friend's dog without him knowing what it was. He agreed as he was reportedly very kind and didn't like saying no.

magicstar1 · 22/08/2024 11:09

I have a German Shepherd who is 30kg. If she tries to run or pulls on the lead, I can certainly hold her back as I'm a lot stronger than she is. There's an XL bully who's taken for walks in a local park and he is 74 kg! He's not even fully grown yet, and there is no way his owner could ever keep him under control if he's tries to run.

I admit, they terrify me. I keep well away with my dog as neither of us would stand a chance with one.

It wasn't actually his dog despite what the report says, he was looking after it for a friend 😥 very sad.

Where have you read this?

I honestly don't know why people come out with this type of comment. Obviously most/all breeds could kill a tiny helpless baby, given sufficient opportunity. No-one denies that.

The issue is the dogs that can, and are, killing fully grown adults - and it is overwhelmingly the badly-bred bull breeds.

I've read the same comment 1000 times on Facebook lol... I've a friend in America where pitbulls are completely legal he had one for 11 years and was woken one day to being mauled... not always an owner issue the dog had simply gone crazy!

Sarvanga24 · 22/08/2024 11:40

Even the bad owners thing doesn't wash though. There are, sadlly, millions of dogs across the UK and America living with cruel and neglectful owners. They're not all maiming/killing them though.

lololulu · 22/08/2024 12:01

@Evenstar
Thanks.

Strange no other paper had mentioned this.

BlackShuck3 · 22/08/2024 12:10

@Jezabelle85
I have the next door app and I occasionally read the comments. The exchange that you describe is unsurprising; all the people on there appear to have shit for brains- just like all the people on Facebook😶

This is very very true where I lived previously local had an outdoor rottweiler skinny as anything! Out in ALL weather abused ( yes we reported he's conditions ) he often escaped and never harmed anyway. I believe the xl bully was breed to be what it is a huge aggressive beast purchased to protect the homes of stress pharmacists and as a fashion accessory for simpletons who want to look tough

BlackShuck3 · 22/08/2024 12:12

Oh this is awful, he was a decent kind man, makes me think of poor Ian Price🙏😞

BlackShuck3 · 22/08/2024 12:25

Cane Corsos. Another awful breed. I saw one with cropped ears heading to a local common this week. The woman walking it could hardly control it even with all the strappings and contraptions it had on. These things make a walk in the park seem very stressful and hard work. What is the appeal?
@Nevergoodenoughforthem
I think the appeal is status. To them the dog is impressive and majestic, they want and expect onlookers to admire them, to be impressed by the dog and the fact that they are in control (in their mind only) of this powerful creature.
I agree with you about the cane corso. I now divide dogs into two groups ones, that I could easily fight off and ones I couldn't. The latter group I steer well clear of.

The corso will be banned next that will be the next chav dog of choice.

He even looks a bit like Ian Price. He does not look the typical type of owner.

STILL, you'd have to have been living under a rock to not know the risk posed by this breed. I am sorry for the horrendous death he would have suffered.

My guess is that the person who was killed was a very polite person and the owner of the dog had more dominant personality. The former felt unable to challenge the latter ☹️

lololulu · 22/08/2024 13:41

It looks like he wasn't looking after it that it was given to him permanently.

"Yes the police report says 'owner killed' however it wasn’t his dog. He wanted a recscue dog, he wanted to give some of his love to something else because he had a lot of love to give everyone. He got asked if he could look after the dog instead of getting a rescue dog. My dad didn’t know the word no."

Uglyandgrumpy · 22/08/2024 13:46

Another just on BBC now in Birmingham. How many more.

MortimerBeQuiet · 22/08/2024 13:49

Cane corsos are already banned under XL bully legislation.
