The victim actually looks typical of an xl owner

Just like with the NW case, these weren't his dogs, he was dogsitting.

He'll of know it's illegal for them to change hands!

LilBowWow · 28/08/2024 17:54

Dog sitting isn’t a change of hands. That would be selling or giving the dog away.

veritasverity · 28/08/2024 19:34

I just don't understand why anyone would volunteer or agree to dog sit this type of dog.

You have to have insurance to even pet sit them!

Where did you read that?

LilBowWow · 28/08/2024 21:50

It was in the government legislations at all times insurance needs to be in place and that doesn't extend to a dog sitter. Also what's the bet that these latest dogs are not Insured!?

LilBowWow · 28/08/2024 21:58

I’d love to see that legislation.

StMarieforme · 28/08/2024 22:09

Please spare a thought for the paramedics who would have had to cope with this. Just awful. 😞

Mls1984btc · 28/08/2024 22:35

Seriously does anyone know what should I do in the event of an unfortunate encounter with one of these creatures? Should I protect my face with my arms?

Wishitwasstraightforward · 28/08/2024 23:01

For context I am a dog walker, and also offer sitting. My insurance company has been very clear that one of the exemptions is for XL Bullies. So I would not be covered to do any work with one.

That's quite a hard question to answer @Mls1984btc as much would depend on the specifics of the situation.

In all honesty fighting a dog of this size and weight off could be impossible if it is determined to do you harm.

People may suggest various actions to try to stall the dog but these are based on causing the dog fear, pain, or discomfort and are just as likely to inflame the situation further.

Anything you can do to protect your face, neck, chest would be wise. Getting away is obviously also wise- but running can trigger a chase response in the dog.

LilBowWow · 28/08/2024 23:23

Right, I was thinking more of a pet sitting favour for a friend rather than paid work.

Realistically the only thing would be to taser it, but since carrying a taser is illegal you're pretty much screwed, that's the whole problem with these dogs, they are very powerful, very big dogs which can weigh up to 60kg, that weight is largely made up of muscle. They are the perfect killing machine, it why they have been banned.
The genius bloke on the ch4 documentary "death row dogs" did an epic piece to camera to show you how to tackle a dog attacking you...it's worth a watch, just make sure if you're ever being attacked you have a spare person with something resembling a cheese wire to semi garrotte the dog, then you'll be fine!

Well I got no chance then.

veritasverity · 28/08/2024 23:54

Well I suppose you could carry a bit of steak around with you, waft it under its nose lob the steak as far away from you as possible and climb a tree.

Mls1984btc · 28/08/2024 23:57

i do carry pepper spray. hopefully that will help!

What's frightening is the people who love axle have now moved onto other monstrous breeds. Cane corso attacks will be on the news, mark my words

ValsCupcakes · 29/08/2024 09:43

The person who lived next door to us before the current neighbour had a cane corso puppy. He was renting the house and shouldn't have an animal anyway. He allowed it out to c**p all over the decking and blocked the toilet with it when another neighbour pointed out the mess on the back, flies circling and so on. Eventually the landlord found out and kicked him out along with the dog but it could have been a nightmare waiting to happen.

Question for any police adjacent commenters here: Are firearms officers trained specifically on the best (most humane and effective) way to deal with an XL? It seems such a regular occurrence now, I’d like to think there is focussed training.

I can't believe tax money would have to be spent on something like this.

Our neighbours have a yappy Jack Russell.
When DH was walking past it shot from under their hedge and had hold of his ankle, it's a vicious little thing. If they were any bigger they'd be on the banned list.

Any dog that attacks any human should be put down. Could be a child's face next.

Having seen enough pictures of late (most recent being when a dog was saved from a Birmingham canal) I can only say as far as these eyes are concerned these dogs are the stuff of nightmares. "Devil dogs" would be the most appropriate description.

This was years ago, they reinforced their fences since. It's getting on a bit now. But still barks!
