This Morning - No mention of Little Arthur

The horrendous case of Arthur is at the forefront of all our minds this week, and all other live TV shows seem to be discussing the case, however Phil and Holly have not so much as uttered a word about him this week. They are so smiley and happy and I just find it really disrespectful and surprising that they haven't even acknowledged him. AIBU??
@PAFMO it gets worse. There’s a thread where a poster is talking about how they’d have advocated for the capital punishment of James Bulger’s ten year olds killers back when they were convicted. They’re one step away from suggesting how nice it would have been to see if as a public event, with some jousting and cock-fighting, Tudor-style.
Yes, I do get the impression, from the views of some posters, that if public hangings were reintroduced they'd be elbowing their way to the front of viewers; even better, if the offenders were being drawn and quartered as well.

Absolutely, horrifying.

lollipoprainbow · 07/12/2021 14:28

What do you expect?! Phil and little miss 'perfect and blessed' aren't likely to give a monkeys about anything that isn't light and fluffy and innuendo inducing are they ?!

Branleuse · 07/12/2021 14:30

62 children a year are killed by abuse and neglect in the UK. This is a particularly horrible case but it does make me wonder why some cases are replayed again and again and cause an outpouring of collective grief and yet others barely register.
Im upset by the case, but no im not in tatters or expecting Holly and Phil to cover it.

Or....maybe they just understand that there are more appropriate places to discuss the murder of a child by his caregivers than a weekday morning entertainment show?
lollipoprainbow · 07/12/2021 14:33

It was bad enough seeing Susanna Reid weeping on breakfast tv this morning trying to show how empathetic she is!

anungratefulwretch · 07/12/2021 14:35

My DP was watching football last night and they all had a moment to 'remember' him and had his picture displayed. In my opinion it's disrespectful to those that actually knew him and are trying to deal with what happened.

Couldn't agree more. Things like that are surely irrelevant to the family and friends who are genuinely grieving. I can't imagine how on earth it helps. Pure performance.

lollipoprainbow · 07/12/2021 14:35

@Branleuse no I just can't stand the talentless smug woman. She needs a swift dose of reality.

Or maybe she was genuinely upset. Have you considered that?

@Medievalist

*Child abuse is everyone's business and we all have a role to play in stopping it

Grief theatre is another matter*

Well put.

Yes indeed. So many comments here saying they don't want to know about this case. We need to be able to recognise evil doing and prevent it as best we can.

I don't want Holly and Phil to discuss this subject. They're despicable hypocrites.

Totally disagree. I applaud the football fans.
YourenutsmiLord · 07/12/2021 14:46

Can't believe people are insensitive to this death. Critical of those who are upset by it.
It's a horrific story, the worst I've come across in the UK.

But there are 1-2 deaths of children per week.

No doubt we'll have a few social workers or doctors sacked or struck off, their lives ruined because some pompous MP wants to be seen to care (thanks to screaming headlines and the baying public) and wants to be seen to 'Do something about it' - - - - - deaths happen every week - stop pretending you can do something about it by blaming a few overworked under-resourced public servants.
You need services for the new mothers, preschool children to improve - actually do that and it might make a difference.
And stop making the jobs of social workers etc tick box exercises - let them show initiative, follow hunches.
I still hate Ed Balls for sacking the woman who was head of services involved with Baby P case, sacking her publicly in the House of Commons wihtout prior warning - oooh, he fairly fixed the problem - NOT - the doctor involved had a break down and returned to ?Iraq where she'd come from.

HunkyPunk · 07/12/2021 14:48

As another thread has noted brilliantly, the obsessive and tasteless navel gazing going on is from the same people who wouldn't have wanted their own children playing with "the likes of" Arthur Labinjo-Hughes and would probably have complained to the school were their own made to sit next to him.

I haven’t seen the thread you refer to, but why would that be said?

Sofiegiraffe · 07/12/2021 14:50

@SallyWD

I think some posters are being too harsh with their comments about "grief wanking", "competitive grieving", "grief vultures" etc. I suppose I am one of the people you're referring to because I have been very upset and I have mentioned on these posts that I've been crying and it's affected my sleep. I am certainly not trying to make it all about ME -far from it, it's 100% about Arthur and all the other children that are still being abused. I'm not raking over news stories - I do everything I can to avoid them. I'm not trying to show what a wonderful person I am because I was very upset. It's not kind to refer to people who are struggling with these stories as some kind of exhibitionists. I have only mentioned how upsetting I find it because it's help to get your feelings down in writing. I have spent a lot of time in tears and I have had my sleep disturbed. Therefore, when something preys on my mind I find it helps to express it and I can do so here on this anonymous forum. I WISH I didn't have this reaction to the news but do. Other people post on Mumsnet saying they're in tears over mundane things and that's fine. If some people are very disturbed by this story why can't they express it in a post without people calling them names, saying they're putting it on for show or are trying to prove how compassionate they are. We're all different. Some people are haunted by things they read. Other people are more easily able to move on from things. I don't judge them or think they're heartless. of course they're not. They're just wired differently. I envy them.
Well said
HeartsAndClubs · 07/12/2021 14:54

Yes, I do get the impression, from the views of some posters, that if public hangings were reintroduced they'd be elbowing their way to the front of viewers; even better, if the offenders were being drawn and quartered as well. on the thread about whether people would want to bring back capital punishment there is actually a poster who said that if capital punishment means a few innocent people are wrongly executed then it’s a small price to pay. Hmm

Toddlerteaplease · 07/12/2021 14:58

The whole nation is 'not in tatters'. Outside of mumsnet and the news. I've not heard anyone mention it.

HeartsAndClubs · 07/12/2021 14:58

It's a horrific story, the worst I've come across in the UK. really? It was only a few weeks ago when people were posting about the death of another child at the hands of her caregivers, which people were saying was “the worst story they’d ever seen.” And then there was baby P of course, the child who had lived with his grandparents for a year and was then returned to his parents only to be murdered shortly after (I can’t remember their name,)

There are usually several cases a year which come to the public’s attention, and every time it happens there are a slew of threads talking about how people are crying, and how it’s the worst case they’ve ever seen. Those words are like a template. Totally meaningless because they’re trotted out routinely now.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/12/2021 14:59

@Hobnobswantshernameback

Dear god is there no end to the grief wanking.
This.
Welshmaenad · 07/12/2021 15:01

"What can be done to improve the system"

Fund social services properly. Stop voting Tory. It's a short list.

Darkpheonix · 07/12/2021 16:11

I don't understand why they haven't invited charity workers on to these shows educate the general public more and to raise funds

Raise funds for what?

Educate who?

And why does it have to be this morning when every other daytime ITV programme has covered it.

And again, what support regarding raising do you want?

PAFMO · 07/12/2021 16:37

I haven’t seen the thread you refer to, but why would that be said?

Because it's the truth. You only have to read MN for long enough to see how NIMB it really is. That kid that smells? That you don't want next to yours? That kid that has nits constantly? That you don't want next to yours? That kid that uses bad language at the age of 6? That you don't want next to yours?

They're all potentially Arthur Labinjo-Hughes. But you didn't want him next to yours.

And I'm willing to bet that the Phil and Holly have a damn sight more empathy and sympathy towards abused children than many of the frankly hysterical posters we've got on here.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 07/12/2021 16:49

I've just seen someone online trying to organise a nationwide doorstep clap for Arthur tomorrow night.

This is beginning to remind me of Charlie Gard and the self proclaimed 'army', some people do just jump from tragedy to tragedy and make it about themselves.

lollipoprainbow · 07/12/2021 16:52

@ABCeasyasdohrayme they'll be campaigning for a state funeral next and what's the betting people will try and find out where's he buried so they can leave teddies etc. all a bit undignified.

The way people insert themselves and their wants into someone elses tragedy is horrific.

I will bet not one of these people collecting attention and likes online will do anything constructive about preventing future tragedies.

smileanddance · 07/12/2021 17:05

Genuinely shocked by the anger some people have towards people who are upset about this story. Surely this is what forums like this are here for? To discuss what's on our mind?

I agree that This Morning is probably the wrong platform, however if ITV decided to show the nation those vile videos, they should now hold some responsibility in dealing with the affect they have had on many viewers (seemingly few on this thread!)
