This Morning - No mention of Little Arthur

The horrendous case of Arthur is at the forefront of all our minds this week, and all other live TV shows seem to be discussing the case, however Phil and Holly have not so much as uttered a word about him this week. They are so smiley and happy and I just find it really disrespectful and surprising that they haven't even acknowledged him. AIBU??

Yes, that’s exactly what upset people need- that’s pair of grinning buffoons holding back their perma-giggles for 30 seconds while they read Arthur’s name off the auto cue before telling everyone they could win a new car and £10k by texting in the answer to the question “what’s Philips first name? Is it A) Jim B) Mark or C) Phillip.”

That would help the nation immensely.

pigsDOfly · 07/12/2021 12:09

Surely it would be more disrespectful to slot in a mention of him in between all the fluff.

What exactly could they say that would add anything and how would they do it exactly?

It's a light entertainment show not a news show.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 07/12/2021 12:11

What would it achieve?
Other than to give the sobbers, shakers and wailers something else to emote over

PleasantBirthday · 07/12/2021 12:11

Surely it would be more disrespectful to slot in a mention of him in between all the fluff.

No, not at all. It'd fit right in between a features on funny potatoes that look like Kerry Katona and anal bleaching.

Darkpheonix · 07/12/2021 12:11

@smileanddance

Good points, fair enough! I just find it strange that the whole nation is in tatters over this awful story and they aren't offering any support over it. They do a lot of phone-ins where they do cover serious topics too. Loose women discussed it and they are also a light entertainment show.
Offering support to who?

Is the whole nation in tatters over it?

Really, everyone?

I think its very upsetting that it happened and was allowed to happen. But I am not in tatters over it. But my mother died unexpectedly last Thursday. So trying to support my kids and dad and cope myself has dominated my life.

I am sure thousands of people, also find it sad, but also have other things going off that they can't be in tatters over this.

x2boys · 07/12/2021 12:12

It's a horrible tragic story ,but maybe the family have had enough of it being on every programme , newspaper etc ,they need to grieve privately.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 07/12/2021 12:13

The idea of a phone in is ghoulish in the extreme. No right-minded person could fail to be upset by the case, but it shouldn't be turned into a form of morbid entertainment where we all gnaw over the details.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/12/2021 12:13

Although I am sad for him I am not in tatters and I don't expect a lot of coverage above the general news reporting. I was a child protection social worker and have seen my fair share of 'Arthurs'. It is harrowing but there are terrible people out there who perpetuate suffering on small children. All the safeguarding and reviews will not stop it happening. Getting too over emotionally involved over one case is not helpful for anyone. If there is anything needing discussed it is the woeful lack of funding for front line social workers.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/12/2021 12:13

Seriously?

smileanddance · 07/12/2021 12:16

Okay message heard loud and clear, I am
BU!
I don't think the TV execs should have ever shared those horrific videos with the general public in the first place, but now they have without any trigger warnings, they need to take responsibility and offer content with support for what they have made us witness. Not all of us are lucky enough to have real life support and I think you'd be surprised at the number of people who do rely on TV shows like these for support.

gamerchick · 07/12/2021 12:17

I'm glad. It's been bled dry, just like baby P.

No the whole nation isn't in tatters OP and no it doesn't need to be rehashed over and over again on every live program. If it's affected you badly then you need to seek personal help for that.

Grief wanking. Never heard that before but it suits.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 07/12/2021 12:17

Televisions have off buttons
So I've been told
They're an amazing invention

myrtleWilson · 07/12/2021 12:18

What type of support are you asking TV execs to provide?

gamerchick · 07/12/2021 12:18

I haven't seen any videos. I don't want to see any videos, it hasn't been hard to avoid.

Darkpheonix · 07/12/2021 12:18

Not all of us are lucky enough to have real life support and I think you'd be surprised at the number of people who do rely on TV shows like these for support..

Why do you need support about this? And do you think it must come from this morning?

If other ITV programmes have covered it, them ITV have offered this 'support' you want.

Every news programme I saw about it did have clear trigger warnings. Which ones didn't?

MatildaTheCat · 07/12/2021 12:19

According to the NSPCC there are 62 child deaths from child abuse and neglect in the U.K. each year. Arthur’s story has shocked the nation in its awfulness but after the headlines and the subsequent noise about ‘never again and enquiries’ life goes on.

Grim and shocking yes but nothing further can be usefully added by the media now.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 07/12/2021 12:19

Dear god
Have we become this infantilised.
I give up

aSofaNearYou · 07/12/2021 12:20

I think YABU tbh. It's obviously a very tragic story but I think some people are getting a bit carried away and expecting national mourning from everybody. I don't think it is at the forefronts of "all of our minds", and it isn't really of national interest, it's just captured the minds of a fair few. I don't mean that to sound unkind or at all undermine that it is a very sad situation.

But This Morning is a fluff show, it's going too far to say that all shows that AREN'T news shows need to focus on this story.

Mrsjayy · 07/12/2021 12:20

I agree with you I think there was far too much information shared about Arthur but you do have the power to switch off the television and not watch the news, genuinely what support do you think this morning could offer you.

DanceInTheKitchen · 07/12/2021 12:22

I don’t watch This Morning but I’ve seen clips on YouTube where they do cover or touch upon serious new stories so I can see why OP thought it would have been mentioned or covered in some way.

But they don't cover every single story.

And it appears op is feeling they are responsible for providing her with support. Not sure how just reporting on it would achieve that

burnoutbabe · 07/12/2021 12:27

You could have had an interview like on good more Britain with the mothers mother which didn't once mention that her child is in prison for killing someone too and that person also had a mother and so should life mean life for all killers or not?

Sirzy · 07/12/2021 12:29

I think it gets to a point where things end up way to intrusive. Everyone is appalled by what has happened and change is needed to stop it again. BUT we are at the point now where no amount of news coverage will change anything

smileanddance · 07/12/2021 12:31

The news was on in the background and then the video just started showing and I couldn't find the remote quick enough to switch the TV off. I was actively avoiding reading anything about the case at the time so had no idea it was going to show up, perhaps there was a trigger warning but I didn't hear it.
The video has completely haunted me, I think the term 'grief wanking' is vile. My main emotion is actually 'hopelessness'.

I feel like the TV shows should be discussing what can be done to improve the system, what we as the public can do to help, what charities we can all donate to, what we can do if we are concerned about any children etc. There's loads of topics they can discuss,
