So do Black lives actually matter then?

Surprised to see no conversation on one of the biggest issues in the news at present.

The one thread I have seen referencing this took the angle of the police officers dead. I did give it a quick browse, but as usual the thread was derailed and focused on proving that UK news channels poorly covered the most recent deaths and that seemed to be it! Hmm

I haven't come across any real discussion on the actual incidents and more importantly the obvious trend of police brutality on black lives.

Why?

There are protests all over the world right now, and there have been three in London over the weekend alone.

In a civilized society, uproar should not just come from a select minority, but rather from everyone!

Where is the mainstream voice? Where is the outrage? Where are the allies? Where are you?

Do Black lives not matter then?

The NRA will never allow gun control unfortunately, so more and more deaths of children, man and women of all races will continue.

If they won't change their tune when a primary school is shot at and children die, they never will change in my opinion Sad

I haven't read the full thread, but I wanted to say that I didn't find your OP aggressive and I think you have a valid point.
Instead of considering it as an option or something to think about, it's always turned around to the other person being unreasonable or aggressive.
I see this all of the time when women are discriminated against and people will turn around and go, "but what about men?". It feels a bit like that.

People prefer to brush it under the carpet instead of considering why these things are happening.

I think a lot of people basically aren't interested unless it's directly affecting them, unfortunately. I'm not sure what the answer is but I just wanted to say I do not find you aggressive.

Euripidesralph · 11/07/2016 22:27

Honestly I find you're attitude frustrating

Why do you feel the need to be condescending ?

All lives matter .... black , white and bloody purple spotted aliens from Mars

There isn't a single being on earth that does not matter , I couldn't give a flying fuck the colour of someone's skin , their bloody religion or anything else

Human being or animal if you are sentient then you matter end of discussion

But the reason why I probably don't post on any forum specifically around the black Lives Matter is because most of the rhetoric turns into an attack at the moment

The undercurrent of the black Lives Matter campaign translates to me as less about recognising that all loves should be valued in the same way than about smacking people over the head and insisting I stop caring about one issue because it's taking away from theirs.

Frankly I don't appreciate it....I live my youngest son , that doesn't detract from loving my eldest it's the same, the original premise was fine ....absolutely the colour of your skin should not dictate how much violence against you is reported

But don't fucking speak down to me and tell me I don't think black Lives Matter....I will not be told when and where to emotionally respond to things....tell me do you give as much effort to righting wrongs of other cultures as well? No didn't fucking think so

It shouldn't be black Lives Matter, or white lives matter , or insert religion here matter

All lives matter it's not a fucking competition

ProfessorPickles · 11/07/2016 22:27

Achildsjoy - a friend of mine has the same problem, he constantly gets pulled over by the police. He also can guarantee he'll be taken to the side and searched at the airport, every single time.

Coatgate · 11/07/2016 22:28

All lives matter surely?

This is the second thread in as many days of someone bemoaning the fact that MN was not awash with a subject they thought should have everyone bashing the keyboard.

achildsjoy · 11/07/2016 22:29

I wonder why some white people get so defensive when black people try and bring their issues to the forefront?

LostQueen · 11/07/2016 22:30

When we talk about the Black Lives Matter movement, can we please remember that the overarching anger does not come from the fact that there are individual racist police. There will always be individual racists in all walks of life, it is an unfortunate reality of the world we live in.

The anger comes from the fact that the "justice" system protect those racist attitudes by not convicting those individuals. All of the examples I can think of are horrific, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice etc etc but for me, Walter Scott is one of the worst. If a "justice" system can protect an officer who can shoot a man in the back as he's running away and therefore posing no threat to his life, to me its plainly obvious where the anger comes from. How can people be expected to be ok with living in a society that makes it so plainly obvious that their lives have less value placed on them because of their skin colour?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 11/07/2016 22:31

I haven't read the full thread, but I wanted to say that I didn't find your OP aggressive and I think you have a valid point.

If you had read the thread you would a) have seen that it was my opinion, b) you have no idea of my race c) I have never said the OP doesn't have a valid point.

thecatfromjapan · 11/07/2016 22:33

It's a huge thing I've been following events for a while and been both aghast and also cheered at people's resistance.

Why is there not more discussion?

I can only answer for myself: I don't feel informed enough to start a thread myself, though I am very keen to become more informed.

achildsjoy · 11/07/2016 22:33

If I say my house is on fire and you say 'all houses matter' well that may be true, but all houses aren't on fire right now. My house is.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/07/2016 22:33

I do talk about the Black Lives Matter movement, and have recently informed my dad that his "shouldn't it be 'all lives matter'" argument is a fatuous one and why.

However as a white woman, I'm unsure if it is my place to be vocal about it, say on social media. I don't mean that in a dickish way, just that I don't what to offend black people by appearing to be "offended for them", as I have seen that perspective on social media quite often.

It isn't that I don't care, I really do and whole heartedly support the BLM movement.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 11/07/2016 22:34

I wonder why some white people get so defensive when black people try and bring their issues to the forefront?

Are you talking about this thread? If so how do you know the race of posters?

Euripidesralph · 11/07/2016 22:35

Bless you .....I don't get defensive when black people bring their issues to the forefront I get defensive when people like you play ridiculous games posting rhetoric when people close to me are genuinely fighting for recognition for the same issues but don't feel the need to target others because they can't cope

I've got people close to me that spend everyday trying to make the world a better place for everyone , black , white and freaking purple spotted , don't play silly games on the Internet....go out and do something about it

You are not a warrior for the cause , your hiding taking potshots

quencher · 11/07/2016 22:36

I posted one earlier and know replies.

honeysucklejasmine · 11/07/2016 22:36

I liked this.

So do Black lives actually matter then?
LazyFemme · 11/07/2016 22:37

"I wonder why some white people get so defensive when black people try and bring their issues to the forefront?"

Quite.

Op, you don't sound at all aggressive. You may be angry (though your posts come across as reasonable and polite to me) and if so you have every right to be. We should all be angry about this. I'm white and I've been following the news of the shootings in America with rage, sadness, horror and fear. When will it end?

I can't quite believe some people are pulling the "all lives matter" bs. I suppose #notallmen as well...

So do Black lives actually matter then?
LostQueen · 11/07/2016 22:37

I lso don't understand the concept of not talking about it or being angry about it or being outraged by it because it didn't happen here. The only difference here is that we don't have the gun control issue. We can't have a sliding scale of concern for humanity based on the logistics of the tools that are or are not used. Our recent political issues go to show that attitudes in this country are really no different than they are in the states. Yes there are differences in demographics that are targeted and how those attitudes are demonstrated but racial bias is is racial bias and we should all be against all of it regardless of where it is happening in the world.

claig · 11/07/2016 22:38

' but all houses aren't on fire right now. My house is.'

There are a lot of houses on fire, but only some will get media coverage and protests.

'All of the examples I can think of are horrific, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice etc etc but for me, Walter Scott is one of the worst.'

Absolutely, they are horrific. But there are also a lot of names that none of us have ever heard of that are equally horrific but which receive no coverage.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 11/07/2016 22:38

Black lives matter. Every life matters.

I'm concerned about the separation this is causing, I had an argument with someone the other day - they say you can't be racist to a white person.

It's becoming quite scary.

achildsjoy · 11/07/2016 22:40

Piglet I am speaking in general as most of the people I have seen speaking on Facebook etc who have been saying all lives matter have been white, surely if all lives matter then therefore black lives matter equally and everyone should be outraged about this?

OddBoots · 11/07/2016 22:40

I am sitting here trying to work out why I am not posting here or on social media about the Black Lives Matter campaign, I guess I don't feel that I have the right to.

I will wear a real and virtual safety pin and will wade in and challenge racist behaviour I see but when it comes to bigger campaigns I think I feel like I would do more harm than good and me posting could cause offence to those I'd want to support in a 'just who does she think she is - miss high and mighty'.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/07/2016 22:41

Well...BME people can't be racist towards while people, in most Western countries. They don't have the position of power.

I'm sure there's plenty of prejudice against some white people from some BME people but that isn't the same as racism.

LostQueen · 11/07/2016 22:41

Alisvolatpropiis Please know that your voice is valid regardless of your race. It absolutely is your place to be vocal about it because it is an issue of humanity above all else. Use this space to ask questions if you have any but even to even just state that you understand how people are feeling is valid support.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/07/2016 22:41

*white not while.
