At an interview the focus is the facts in question and the answers.

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 13:52

Right, one last push to get the wording and links?

emilybohemia · 15/01/2016 13:58

Pang, perpetrators of sex crimes are often let go. What kind of changes do you think should be made to stop this? It seems comparable to police corruption.Whataboutbob, the belief that women are 'asking for it' is prevalent in our society and doesn't seem to be confined to one group. I think lots of non Muslims hinted that the woman raped by Ched Evans was responsible for her actions.

I think the way to get Muslim women, or any woman, on board is to have a campaign that focuses on the sexual violence committed by different kinds of men and highlights police inaction and negligence. There is already a campaign like this called 'no excuses' which is run by German women.

HelenaDove · 15/01/2016 14:05

Im a left wing feminist and i havent been minimizing this at all Far from it.

whataboutbob · 15/01/2016 14:12

I can't entirely agree Emily. I don't want to re tread well worn paths, but the degree of sexual intimidation, violence and rape in many Muslim countries is out of proportion to what you find in most Western countries. Sexual harassment on the street is taken as a given partly due to the large number of young, underemployed and frustrated males and far from shaming the guys who do it, the response is to think of ways of reducing individual risk: going out in groups, being accompanied by male relatives, or veiling. I grew up in Algeria and the street was not a public place but a potentially hostile one where taking a wrong turn can lead to harassment or a sexual assault. I was sexually harrassed and worse from about age 10. A schoolfriend was nearly raped, the police's response was to ask her mother why she had let her out of the house (to cross the road to my house).
There is an issue with guys from these cultures coming over here, with their cultural baggage of growing and being told Western women are easy. That's what the petition needs to address, rather than coping out and saying "we're fighting all forms of female oppression" and not tackling the issue which is muslim guys are coming over here in increasing numbers , and some obviously think it's OK to grab women on the street.

HelenaDove · 15/01/2016 14:15

The organisation Femmes for Freedom was started by Shirin Musa.

On another note the right have let women down in many ways. Cuts to domestic abuse shelters. Cheering on and voting for the end of social housing. How can a woman leave if she has nowhere to go.

fourmummy · 15/01/2016 14:17

ON NEW YEAR'S EVE, WOMEN ACROSS EUROPE WERE SUBJECTED TO AN IMPORTED AND ORGANISED FORM OF GROUP SEXUAL ASSAULT. UK WOMEN MUST BE FREE TO TRAVEL, WORK AND LIVE WITHOUT INTIMIDATION AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE. WE ASK THE GOVERNMENT TO ENSURE THAT CHANGING CULTURAL DEMOGRAPHICS DO NOT ERODE WOMEN’S RIGHTS.

I think this one covers it all very well. I need to go because of work but will sign in later/ over the weekend. Well done!

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 14:17

Helena, can you please make those points on social media and to your MP? Very important.

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 14:18

I struggle to read cap lock text.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 15/01/2016 14:20

Version 3, 298 Put into lower case, and still awaiting amendment.

On New Year’s Eve, women across Europe were subjected to an imported and organised form of group sexual assault. UK women must be free to travel, work and live without intimidation and sexual violence. We ask the Government to ensure that changing cultural demographics do not erode women’s rights.

Unfortunately my MP is on the list as having voted against making rented properties fit for human habitation so i dont think he would actually give a shit.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 15/01/2016 14:22

'Islam' is not a society outwith. The numbers of rapes and sexual crimes in the UK are quite high. Do you think there is not a patriarchal society in the UK? Why do you think these crimes are more likely among Muslims?

Hi Emily, just getting back to you on this.

I do agree of course that there are too many sexual crimes as it is in the UK. I was referring to a particular style of sexual crime - Tarrahush gamea - that is the novel factor here in Europe, as far as I am aware. The term originated in Egypt, I believe, where that style of attack has been documented for some time.

Do we have a patriarchal society here? Yes, but it is a matter of degree, isn't it? We have freedoms in this country that are not enjoyed by women elsewhere.

emilybohemia · 15/01/2016 14:22

The German noexcuses campaign is about sexual violence, not all kinds of female oppression.

There is an issue with guys from many cultures thinking women are easy, so why only address some of them? That seems more of a cop out to me. Why focus on it as an imported problem when it isn't? Why not focus on all men that think it ok to grab women in the street or rape them?

Why is the issue 'Muslim guys coming over here in increasing numbers'? Immigrant men do not all share the same religion, nor does being a Muslim make you more likely to be a sex attacker. The notion that this is true is a myth that has been well trodden here, but does need to be continually challenged.

TheNewStatesman · 15/01/2016 14:24

"They are banning migrants from swimming pools in Germany"

Genuine question, but legally how can they do that?

fourmummy · 15/01/2016 14:26

BTW, not 'tharrush' or whatever it is - people won't know how to engage with the term...and it sounds too much like thrush!

DeeEm · 15/01/2016 14:30

Hi. I'm sorry if this has been posted already.

MIGRANT SEX ATTACK 'COVER-UP': Welcome party for Cologne refugees turned into mass groping
www.express.co.uk/news/world/634815/Cologne-attacks-fury-migrant-sex-cover-up-refugee-event-groping-Germany
FURY was growing in Germany tonight over mounting evidence of a cover-up of migrant sex crimes after it emerged a welcome party for refugees held two months before the Cologne rapes descended into a mass groping session.

Police and victims have furiously demanded to know why organisers did not warn them that refugees had committed abhorrent sexual harassment amid speculation such information could have helped avert the sickening attacks on New Year's Eve.

Young women had to flee the welcome event in terror after being groped by gangs of migrant men, even though organisers repeatedly interrupted the music with messages in Arabic urging them to stop their harassment.

Also this video is on-topic.

Europe's Betrayal of Women

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 14:34

Yes showing coverup is a good point. I think the express article has merit.

I like the shadow Minister blog post, it was well balanced and should in my opinion be added to the petition as a link.

HelenaDove · 15/01/2016 14:40

JESUS

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 14:44

Ok, Who like me has been Sexually assaulted by Men like those described in these news articles?

Pangurban1 · 15/01/2016 14:45

Emily, Could you give me an instance of mobs of roughly a thousand men forming mobs and gangs sexually assaulting, robbing and raping several hundred women in a public civil space with police present, not being dealt with and a cover up happening afterwards with victims not even being able to be get help or documented properly as an example?

Do you think police vans arriving with tasers and kettling techniques would be the norm most places? They were out in force with the marches following. But looked on without reinforcements with this incident, didn't document properly and called sexual assaults, robbery and rape as a peaceful experience for the women on the night in the subsequent police statement.

I really want to know the other places this enormous scale mob sex attacks has occurred and perps have just been watched from afar and been let go. And the police covering up, giving false statements to protecting the perps, too. The subsequent marches were policed better and several hundred people weren't attacked or raped in police view.

VertigoNun · 15/01/2016 14:48

I have suffered street harassment from Men of various heritages. To this day I am grateful I got away without being raped by a Turkish man, my ordeal lasted ten minutes. I was pinned down and he was leaning his weight over me, using my breasts to gratify himself.

kesstrel · 15/01/2016 14:50

This piece in the Guardian is excellent. And what's notable is how different most comments are in tone from the outraged comments below the previous, apologist articles - showing that it is simply wrong to slander everyone who has expressed anger at these events and their covering-up as racists and bigots.

An interesting account from a Syrian who witnesses the attacks.
