Thread 6.

Welcome back Help.
I vote for a thread specifically about the petition, contacts etc as HQ are less likely to allow sabotaging with posts irrelevant to the thread (at least I'd like to think so as it says so in MNHQ trolling policy).

anonymousnosides · 18/01/2016 18:55

Yes you had yobs of men acting like barbarians.

However, the reporting has been abyssal. Many news outlets are still saying it was 1000 men when the police chief clearly stated it was not 1000 men. And among them were German speaking chaps.

Es gibt keine 1000 Täter. Es gibt eine Gruppe von etwa tausend Menschen, aus der heraus Straftaten begangen wurden.

And this news story seems to indicate that it was 25-30 men in Cologne, not 1000. That might explain why it is difficult to spot.

I'm old enough to remember when Kabul was an exotic tourist destination in the 70's. Scary and sad to see how quickly a country can crumble.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 18/01/2016 18:56

Mariscall I cook from scratch every day and I made a quick ratatouille for my dinner and I've eaten. I'm sorry to hear about the flu ...... you must take vitamin D3, you know. It has a far-reaching influence, which was only recently discovered.

OP posts:
emilybohemia · 18/01/2016 18:56

Sporting, I didn't say anything didn't happen. Did you miss the stats I posted from the BBC report? What have I said didn't happen?

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 18/01/2016 18:59

Thank you, ItsJustaUserName. Yes, on reflection a completely separate thread for the petition is better.

OP posts:
sportinguista · 18/01/2016 19:01

I didn't take it that way at all polenta...I don't take offence easily and have quite a wicked sense of humour mostly. Yes the song has lodged in my brain now, I will probably attempt a cleansing with some Misfits tomorrow (like bleach to the brain).

I tend to have a very tough approach to those who attempt to label me. I've been very alternative for a lot of years and am well used to people throwing crap. Also quite adept at seeing behind the exterior paint that people like to throw up. Painting it pink on the outside don't make it pink underneath, likewise pretending that something isn't happening doesn't stop it.

Yes facts need to be gathered, but ignoring ones we don't 'like' doesn't help anyone and speculation is just that. Speculating that a figure may be higher than we think is always going to remain that and unless hard facts come to light that back it up, we just don't know. But dealing with the facts of the issue which we are mean't to be discussing and extrapolating from the hard facts, we can deal with that issue and then look at other cases like perhaps Oktoberfest in their own right.

sportinguista · 18/01/2016 19:08

Emily, I know you didn't say nothing happened but you've repeatedly gone rather off topic and seem to want to minimise the impact and the possible issues within this. It would be more helpful to say look at overall sexual violence separately maybe?

Different cultures do have differing attitudes to a wide range of issues, there is good and bad in every place across the world. The only thing that matters is we try and make it a better place for us all, I'm sure you'd agree with that?

I personally want the world to be a better place for all women and for us all to fulfill our dreams and aspirations in safety.

anonymousnosides · 18/01/2016 19:11

emilybohemia- It was also pointed out on various media outlets that some of the assaults were carried out by German speaking people.

I REFUSE to believe that there were 1000 Syrians groping women. That all of a sudden they arrive in a country and choose to get drunk and piss on their hosts?!
1000- how were they counted? Where are the picturers?

Cellardoor1 · 18/01/2016 19:15

Where was it stated that they were 1000 Syrians? No one is saying that. Most of the attackers arrested so far are North African.

There are plenty of pictures online in various articles of the crowd of men at the station.

anonymousnosides · 18/01/2016 19:19

So how mny have they said they were? And WHAT do you say to the Police who put out the number of 20-25 men- among them Germans?

What is your obsession with North Africans? The pictures of men at the station and of the girl have been proven to be fake. Be objective for God's sake!!!

RufusTheReindeer · 18/01/2016 19:19

Goodness you are rude emily

And i said please and everything

use whetever words you like, i happen to agree with your post. I just didnt like the word "comfortable"

emilybohemia · 18/01/2016 19:24

I don't think I've gone off topic. I don't want to minimise the impact. I would like people to put it into perspective rather than panicking and pointing fingers. I have posted consistently that sexual violence should be addressed more seriously. No minimising from me.

I agree that making thw world a better place is a good idea, but do not agree targeting a particular demographic will achieve that.

Sporting, there are no hard facts surrounding what happened in Cologne. Reports are conflicting, yet people have jumped to all sorts of assumptions from the get go.

A Syrian man allegedly ripping up his papers and declaring, 'Mrs Merke invited me, you can't arrest mel'was taken as fact and caused outrage when it seems now it was a load of tosh.

I think you are wrong about stating that figures may be higher. This is relevant in a country that does not see some forms of assault as a crime and tolerates harrassment of women. Women's reluctance to report rape and sexual assault is very relevant to recent events.

rumbleinthrjungle · 18/01/2016 19:25

Welcome back Help we missed you.

Very pleased to see David Cameron's speech today, it's a shame that most newspapers are quoting him very selectively and leaving out all the parts he mentioned on Muslim women's rights and overcoming cultural suppression of those rights and instead painting it as 'stigmatising' by offering them support according to the Guardian.... Hmm

LongWayRound · 18/01/2016 19:30

Could you please post a link which states which photos are fake?

France24 has this:

"Dozens of photos and videos purporting to show young female victims of sexual assaults in Germany, Sweden and even Finland have been spreading like wildfire across social media. Although the women in the photos have bloodied faces, bruised bodies and petrified expressions, FRANCE 24's Observers discovered that many of these pictures are actually fakes."

That's not the same as the photos of the crowds of men at the station.

anonymousnosides · 18/01/2016 19:33

You post your link.

Cellardoor1 · 18/01/2016 19:33

"What is your obsession with North Africans? The pictures of men at the station and of the girl have been proven to be fake. Be objective for God's sake!!!"

anonymous There are lots of pictures available showing the crowd of men. I don't know what you're referring to but they aren't fake. The police have said the people arrested as mainly North Africans. Are they obsessed? There are videos available of the men setting off foreworks which clearly show the cathedral in the background, not fake.

Maybe you mean the video that was purporting to show a girl being dragged into a subway in Germany but was actually an old video from Egypt. We all know that.

sportinguista · 18/01/2016 19:34

Three germans it appears and one american, but it seems to broadly be men of a certain demographic, not all Syrian but still not a large percentage of native or western european origin. Doesn't excuse those germans involved of course but we do need to look at whether it is a cultural phenomenon and come up with a solution. We want things to be safe for everyone and that includes the well behaved migrants who want to get on with their lives. I bet they don't want any idiots spoiling things for them either!

EasterRobin · 18/01/2016 19:35

Ooh, hello again Help!

ItsJustaUserName, is that how MNHQ judge these threads then? If so then yes a thread specifically for the campaign is worth a try.

VertigoNun · 18/01/2016 19:40

Can we please have a new thread linked here?

Can the OP then please link all past threads in the first post?

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 18/01/2016 19:40

Thank you, rumble. I havent seen any TV or papers yet, but did note from the radio how Cameron's speech is being polarized. He's criticised for selecting Muslim women specifically to learn English in order to feel less isolated. The other side is saying that he's unfairly picking on that group and why doesnt he speak about another group? Different agenda, different views.

Mr Cameron said the push on language was "about building a more integrated, cohesive, one nation country where there's genuine opportunity for people". Sounds alright to me. USA insists on it.

help, lovely to see you!

The petition asked earlier for ideas on tweets, given Allison Pearson's support on Twitter.

They need to be 140 characters, anyone got any thoughts?

I don't tweet but I will put my thinking cap on.

In other news, I've heard back from my MEP.

emilybohemia · 18/01/2016 20:12

Help, I'm not sure how threatening Muslims with deportation if they don't learn English is going to build an integrated and cohesive country.

Cellardoor1 · 18/01/2016 20:18

They aren't threatening to deport people though are they Emily?

"There are no plans to remove people who fail to reach a required level, although language skills are taken into account when people request to extend visas or apply for permanent residence in the UK."
