I totally agree. It's really getting out of control.

swOOPingbatS · 17/10/2006 22:18

frightens me in a big way!

Tortington · 17/10/2006 22:18

like what?

bluejelly · 17/10/2006 22:20

The mirror headline the other day was a case in point-- only saw it on the tube but it was something like:
Kelly to target Muslim hotspots

I mean wtf?
Terrorist hotspots maybe, but muslim ?
No wonder people feel alienated and isolated.

I used to think the labour govt was good on race relations but it's all gone tits up in the last few weeks.

IMHO

Tortington · 17/10/2006 22:28

apart from work where its ok to slag christianity in everyday conversation - but no other religeon or you would get fired..... i dont know a non racist person.

not one.

its infecting my 16 yar old son. the G/fs family - hugely racist - in the traditional southern way - against black people.

he then comes home with all this racist shit against eastern europeans - polish " coming over here taking jobs driving out wages down"

zippadee · 17/10/2006 22:28

i do think alot of this is generated by the govt to partly justify the war in iraq and also if we are all fighting amongst each other then we wont pay attention to what else is going on?
i bet the bnp are skipping up and down with glee!

OP posts:
zippadee · 17/10/2006 22:31

who needs the bnp when youve got the labour party. ps i have always been a labour voter!

Piffle · 17/10/2006 22:31

I am amazed at the level of racism in the UK esp in the press!
People just keep themselves to themselves, those who are religious are allowed to be devout/part time or weekenders whatever they choose.
I am so unracist, it really riles me.
I mean aurely most of it is common sense
And as for Polish folk - well around here, they are stunning workers- its the effort and hours they out in, not just the cost that make them always employable. they do a lot of jobs people would not look at here.

zippadee · 17/10/2006 22:33

yeah hellmothcusty theres lots of putting down other people too which is equally aggravating

OP posts:
fuzzywuzzy · 17/10/2006 22:33

I should think the BNP are keeping a low profile at the moment, one of their ex-members was discovered to have hand missiles and chemical weapons in his home...apparantly the police were trying to convince the neighbours it wasn't a terrorist plot (well one would really hope any muslims no matter how stupid wouldn't be a BNP member).

I find it really upsetting, wtf are the government playing at?? Everyday its something else on muslim bashing. I really hate the way terrorist is now linked to just muslims.

My family are muslims and are not terrorists or fanatics.

Government are just making people even more paranoid. How sad.

nearlythree · 17/10/2006 22:35

I find what is going on in the UK deeply weird and very unsettling. Think a lot of it is to distract us from all the s**t that is going on - bad schools, NHS collapsing etc.

I live in East Anglia and our local economy relies on migrant workers (mostly Europeans) to pack and process the crops - locals just don't want to know.

zippadee · 17/10/2006 22:36

really the bnp arent ever going to get anywhere. they are just a bunch of silly boys (and sometimes women) shouting alot, but the anti muslim thing is a bit bigger than that?

OP posts:
bluejelly · 17/10/2006 22:37

Exactly vindaloo. I have a lot of muslim friends and colleagues, none of whom are remotely radical/fundamentalist/sympathetic to terrorism.
I just don't understand why the govt had turned recently, they used to be very good at acknowledging the fact that at least 99% of muslims In Britain are as anti-terrorist as anyone else

Vindaloo · 17/10/2006 22:39

My sister and mum where a hijab (the scarf that just covers your hair) and I have noticed some peoples reaction as we walk down the street, this would never have happened a couple of years ago.

fuzzywuzzy · 17/10/2006 22:40

But Vindaloo the muslim bashing is carefully offset by the media reporting that Christian values are eroding and Christians are no longer able to practice their religion. Ie calling christmas lights ermmm winterval lights or some such nonsense, the BA air Stewardess not being allowed to wear a cross.
Please note neither I nor my friends nor the entire mosque load of worshippers give two hoots about any of these things. And we've rubbed along fine until now, it's only recently that a big quesiton mark has appeared over everything muslim/islamic....

Vindaloo · 17/10/2006 22:41

I used to really like Tony Blair, how things have changed and as for G W Bush, dont get me started!!

Piffle · 17/10/2006 22:41

How do you draw communties together or should you?

piffle I am going out of my way to explain our religious festival to the littlies at my dd's nursery, we're giving out sweets to mark Eid as well.
I am going to get some women together and see if the local primary schools will allow us to give a little talk about our religion and most importantly pour dress (apparantly we scare children....)

Vindaloo · 17/10/2006 22:44

I actually think that communities got on better in the past, its media breeding paranoia now.

fuzzywuzzy - i agree with your comments about christian values.

is it PC gone mad?

fuzzywuzzy · 17/10/2006 22:44

pour=our sorry it's late

zippadee · 17/10/2006 22:45

id be quite scared if i was a muslim now, it would be quite intimidating i should think.
what is also ridiculous is that if you are the very tiny minority that wants to be involved in what is happening globally with terrorism ,then to hear the anti muslim rubbish that is going on by our govt and media, then it would probably make you feel more justified in carrying out acts of violence? ie the govt hates us so we"ll hate you? and so the cycle goes on

IEvery area I have lived in in london has been ethnically, religiously and racially mixed. My dd has friends of all faiths/colours, as do I.
I think a lot of this talk about multi-culturalism failing is bilge, particularly for London ( may be different in other parts of the country)
I think Ken Livingstone should take some credit for this actually!
