Oh and Blu - totally agree with what you say about Asians (both Muslims and others) in the UK. They are and always have been hard working and make an enormous contribution to Britain.

I know I'm going to regret asking this..

fudging the big issues of 9/11,Madrid,London etc

remind me what big issue was fudged wrt to 9/11

ratclare · 27/10/2006 15:17

we buy the mail on sunday which is called 'send the nignogs home on sunday' in our house just to do a competition where we bet what page in it will have a send the nignogs home story! what really makes me laugh about this country and terrorism is that we had the IRA blowing us to smithereens for decades but if you met an irissh person nobody automatically assumed they were terrorsits ,yet there has been one bombing in the uk linked to muslims and the media have gone mental!

tiredemma · 27/10/2006 15:18

ratclare- The irish community in Birmingham had a shite time throughout the mid to late 70's. Really treated very badly.

ratclare · 27/10/2006 15:26

tiredemma yes youre right ,mind you the irish got a rough time in this country for a long time before too.

tiredemma · 27/10/2006 15:27

Can I ask a stupid Q? what is a 'nignog'??

Greensleeves · 27/10/2006 15:34

There was in fact tremendous discrimination and hostility towards Irish people, particularly Irish Catholics, in this coutry for a long time - it isn't totally gone yet, either.

KathyDCLXVI · 27/10/2006 16:23

Tiredemma - 'nignog' is based on the other 'n-word' but perhaps is applied a bit more broadly (ie anyone of different colour rather than black people). It is used in a slightly jocular way so the people who use it for real (I don't mean you, Ratclare, obviously) think it's ok.

Re. discrimination against Irish people - yes, I have just been re-reading 'The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole' (c.1984) and there is an entry I had completely forgotten where their Irish neighbour Mr O'Leary gets arrested on suspicion of terrorism for carrying Action Man accessories through customs.

skanger · 27/10/2006 16:51

yellowrose · 28/10/2006 10:24

HM - please start another thread on Bin Laden and Afghanistan. I think this thread has (thankfully) died.

hooOOooleymama · 28/10/2006 10:28
