Just heard on the news that Steve Irwin "The Crocodile Hunter" has died in a diving accident. He was stung through the heart by a stingray.

His poor family.

I've just seen it too, he was only 44. I've dived in the Great Barrier Reef and seen sting rays, I had no idea they could kill in this way. I wonder why this one did? He leaves two small children

coppertop · 04/09/2006 06:23

Wasn't he the one who caused controversary when he involved his newborn baby in some sort of stunt with crocodiles?

HERE

I just saw it too - thought it was a joke..... feel sad actually - for all of his negative press he has done amazing things in terms of preserving and rescuing australian wildlife - silly I feel almost tearful - I guess too he is as old as dh and we have little ones too - can't imagine how his wife feels.

eidsvold · 04/09/2006 06:27

I'm in Australia & just heard about it an hour ago. We live just an hour's drive from where Steve & Terri Irwin live (or lived ) and have been to Australia Zoo several times.

It's just impossible to believe it's happened. It's all over the news here & people just seem to be almost heartbroken by it. His poor wife, they seemed SO close - I don't know how she will take it.

As embarrassing as his over-the-top persona was sometimes, he did great things for wildlife and for the environment - he was literally larger than life. He'll be greatly missed.

whimsy · 04/09/2006 07:05

How sad, he seemed like a lovely man and loved animals. His poor wife and children

Miaou · 04/09/2006 07:21

This is so sad. Dh and I always used to joke that he would never make it to old age, he was bound to get killed by something he played with - but it's the kind of thin you say but don't necessarily expect to happen isn't it?. Dd2 will be totally gutted - she is passionate about animals, particularly snakes, and a lot of that is down to Steve Irwin (or Steve Irlin as she calls him ).

LadyTophamHatt · 04/09/2006 07:24

We always said the same miaou.....some of the risks he took used to leave me stunned. I'm sure he knew what he was doing but it was going to happen one day

I'm amazed it's been announced before his wife has been told....poor woman.

humpydumpy · 04/09/2006 07:46

The latest reports say that his wife has been contacted and told of the news. Think everyone is in shock over here, it's all over the news with lots of tributes pouring in. My dh thought I was joking when I told him

This is tragic. I have misted up a few times since hearing the news. I loved Steve Irwin. I always thought his wife must have felt so safe with him to protect her. I was lucky enough to see him in action at Australia Zoo. I just can't believe that of all things that a stringray got him. This is only the 3rd death by a stingray in Australian History.

ledodgyrobespierre · 04/09/2006 07:55

I was gutted when I heard this on the news earlier. His poor family.

hitchcock · 04/09/2006 08:04

thought this was a joke when i saw the thread . will be sadly missed he was a good man who cared deeply for animals and not just the cuddly ones

tortoise · 04/09/2006 08:06

Really sad news.He seemed a full of life and fun man.Adored his children.
My ds1 and ds2 will be sad they love watching crocodile hunter on tv.
His poor wife and children.

biglips · 04/09/2006 08:10

aawww no my fave programme guy

liath · 04/09/2006 08:15

That's such a good point, Hitchcock - he was so enthusiastic about the animals that it's tradtitional to hate - croc & snakes etc.

Poor guy & what a freakish thing to happen - I've dived a lot off Queensland and never considered stingrays as a potential threat at all. .

schneebly · 04/09/2006 08:17

Oh god this is awful - he was so young and his poor faily!

ledodgyrobespierre · 04/09/2006 08:18

It was on GMTV just now apparently only one other person in 1944 has ever been killed by a Stingray.

Flamesparrow · 04/09/2006 08:21

they've announced it without telling his wife and children?!?!?

At least he was doing something he loved....

hitchcock · 04/09/2006 08:24
