My DD wants to know if Terri is ok - she's going to write her a letter and send a card, I think she'll receive thousands from all around the world.

YeahBut · 04/09/2006 10:21

Very He was absolutely driven to promote conservation and an appreciation of the natural world around us. He was a bit of an eccentric, no question, but how much duller the world would be if there were no characters like Steve Irwin. His poor family.

mymama · 04/09/2006 10:24

News reports here say that he was filming for his daughter's new show!! Supposed to be about little fish, stingrays etc. Family man to the end!!

SpaceCadet · 04/09/2006 10:31

its so sad, my ds1 has watched his programmes since they first started showing them and he was my ds2's most favourite person, he loved watching the crocodile hunter..

redbull · 04/09/2006 10:35

where are you mymama??

Gingeme · 04/09/2006 10:35

Oh no I cant believe it. We all watch Crocodile Hunter in our family. After all the years he was bitten and stung etc and survived this is gonna be such a blow to his poor wife. Wow I feel quite sad at this news.

MegaLegs · 04/09/2006 10:42

I was suprised at how sad I felt about this news. I think it's because he was a figure many of our kids liked, for some of them it'll be a first experience of someone they 'know' dying.

buffythenappyslayer · 04/09/2006 10:57

just read this on orange homepage.how sad, really feel for his family.

like everyone has said,at least he died doing the job he loved.

my kids are really sad about it,they loved croc hunter

Saturn74 · 04/09/2006 11:20

Very sad news. My DS2 is 8 and really admired Steve Irwin. He's very sad today. How awful for his wife and children.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 04/09/2006 11:24

OH no

I thought he was great, little crazy, but great. How terribly sad.

He really will be missed....

Purple...how crass...

HUNneyOnToast · 04/09/2006 11:25

shes got a point

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 04/09/2006 11:32

Really sad . Always admired his enthusiasm and spirit. The world will miss, it's only a shame there aren't more people as enthusiastic about the planet as he was.

Really for his family as well, although I toot hink they will be eventually comforted by the fact he was doinga s he loved, and also of the legacy he ahs left behind at Australia Zoo.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 04/09/2006 11:34

Doesnt mean it wasnt crass though

serenity · 04/09/2006 11:39

Very sad and shocked to hear this I really feel for his family, can't imagine how they're coping with this at all. I always thought he was completely barmy (in a nice way), but admired his dedication and obvious love for his cause.

Whilst there may be many 'points' to make about people who do dangerous things, and the consquences of that, I really feel this thread is not the one to do it on. If you want to discuss it, I would suggest you start a new one.

crazydazy · 04/09/2006 11:39

I thought he was a bit too silly in what he did, especially the time when he dangled his baby in front of a crocodile but no-one deserves to die, he was entertaining and after all thats what TV is all about.

SecondhandRose · 04/09/2006 11:42

Very sad here too, my 11 yr old DS is gutted. His enthusiasm was wonderful.

His day job was not silly!
he took risks to make good tv, that was his doorway into educating millions of children into ways of conserving wildlife.

David Attenborough has been doing nature programmes for what? 50 years??

i bet youre kids wouldn't cry to hear that he had passed away.
He loved animals of all kinds but particularly those who don't normaly get a good press.
he was to be admired.

it is a very very sad day for conservation. i hope that despite being very young his children are aware of what an amazing man their father was and just how much he has helped the conservation movement.

Here's the statement from their website.

Media statement ? 4 September 2006

Steve Irwin

At 11am today, the 4th September 2006, Steve Irwin was fatally wounded by a stingray barb to his heart whilst filming a sequence on Batt Reef off Port Douglas for his daughter?s new TV series.
Emergency services were called from Cairns Rescue Base and met Croc One, Steve?s rescue vessel at Low Isle on the Great Barrier Reef.
The Croc One crew performed constant CPR during the thirty minute dash to Low Isle, but the medical staff pronounced Steve dead at approx. 12 noon.

His producer and closest friend, John Stainton said on Croc One today,
?The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest Dads on the planet. He died doing what he loves best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. Crocs Rule!?

I think it is sad. He did understand the risks of what he did and he was brought up around these animals. I had such a lump in my throat when reading this.

PinkTulips · 04/09/2006 12:03

i feel really sorry for his kids, awful that they'll have to grow up without a dad (less so for terri as i never got over seeing her playing with poisonous snakes while pregnant, both he and she were obviously quite willing to die themselves and risk their children for the sake of good tv).

if your read this it says he and the camera man had the stingray cornered and it killed in self defence.

HAs anyone here ever driven a car whilst pregnant?
Im sorry but to the Irwins this was their day job. they didn't see handling snakes as dangerouse because they did it day in day out.

if you get in a car you run the risk of death.....Cars kill 1000's of times more people than snakes i am sure!

i seriously doubt either Steve Nor Terri picked up snakes and were happy to die, how ridiculous.
yes he did take risks in order to make tv, as i said that was his entry to the homes of millions and the minds of even more.

SparklyGothKat · 04/09/2006 12:16

dH told me about this this morning. I always said he would die doing his job.

1Baby1Bump · 04/09/2006 12:21

me and dh loved to watch him.
im a bit upset ds wont be able to now. we called him croc botherer though!

you were never bored watching him and as the media have said, he cared a lot and encouraged many others to aswell.
