Just heard on the news that Steve Irwin "The Crocodile Hunter" has died in a diving accident. He was stung through the heart by a stingray.

His poor family.

I admit i have cryed over this, i remember the first time i watched him on T.V. DH and i sat open mouthed as this crazy guy pulled a 12 foot croc out of the water, looked at the camera and said, "hes a little bit cranky"!!!!!
I thought he was bloody brillient, and he did so much to bring wild life to life and help people understand wild life and conservation.
And to be killed by a fish, just goes to show when its your time its your time, it just a shame his time came far far to early.

My thoughts are with his family, they always came accross as so strong and happy.

I just heard this. So sad! He was such a vibrant personality. I love how his wife went along w/all his mad antics.

NAB3 · 04/09/2006 09:35

OMG! I was watching him yesterday. He had a young baby didn't he?

redbull · 04/09/2006 09:36

well said giddy1 that is what i thought, completely out of line its so sad now adays that people have no sympaphy for others

bakedpotato · 04/09/2006 09:36

Oh goodness, am I allowed to make this point? A wildlife expert told Today prog that for a stingray to kill in this way is unheard of. Implication was was stingray must have been provoked, to make good television.
He often took ridiculous risks -- that was one element of his success, surely. I enjoyed his shows (and him) bcs as well as educating, he was a sort of circus entertainer, lots of showmanship and posturing.
Also remember him going into croc pen at feeding time with his baby son.
Am very sorry for everyone he has left behind.

KBear · 04/09/2006 09:38

What struck me most about him was his enthusiasm about wildlife - this enthusiasm picked you up and swept you away with him on his adventures. My kids thought he was great and although many times I did think "nutter, he's asking for it there" I was in awe of his lust for life and love of nature.

Kids need this sort of role model to watch IMO!

A great shame.

oh perpul what a STUPID thing to say!
I bet if your house was burning down and you and your family were in it you would want the fire brigade to rush in and save you all, and not say oh how stupid for them to do a dangerous job.
Miners, police, soulders and god knows how many others have and choose to have dangerous jobs.
This man chose to be a conservastionlist, and to do it with style and it IS a tragedy

ghosty · 04/09/2006 09:41

I feel really sad and teary about this too. He may have been a 'bit of a nutter' but at the end of the day he was a conservationist and was passionate about wildlife ... bringing strange and exotic creatures into our living rooms in a way only he could ... he was larger than life and loud and 'lary' but was ultimately a family man who cared about the world around him.
I am dreading telling DS in the morning.

What a terrible shame. I feel so sorry for his wife and children.

Love him or irritated by him, Steve Irwin is an Australian icon. We'll miss him ... sniff...

ghosty · 04/09/2006 09:44

As my DH said, "At least he died instantly doing what he loved" ... fair point.

Tiggiwinkle · 04/09/2006 09:47

Very sad here too. Such a unique and charismatic personality. The world will be a poorer place without him.

Sparkler1 · 04/09/2006 09:47

How terribly sad. DH and I love to watch his programmes. An amazing man. To be honest he always got away with danger/death by the skin of his teeth with most of his antics didn't he?

Greensleeves · 04/09/2006 09:50

I'm horrified . I had a real soft spot for him, he was so infectious, and very brave. His poor wife and children.

misdee · 04/09/2006 09:52

very sad here, his enthusisam for all creatures was infectious, my kids love his programmes, and me and dh have sat watching with our jaws dropping whilst hw wrestle a croc in a cave.

the only confort i can think of, is that he died doing something he loved.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 04/09/2006 09:54

Seashells · 04/09/2006 09:56

It's so so sad

This is the first celeb who's death has actually hit me in the chest. I can't believe it!

I've asked my mum what on earth I'm supposed to tell ds when he gets in from school, Steve Irwin was his hero!

It's so sad, he was such an enthusiastic man with so much to live for, 2 very young children and a happy marriage. So sad

jac34 · 04/09/2006 10:11

I just told my boys, who love his programs.....They said he was their hero.

MrsCapedCrusader · 04/09/2006 10:12

Told ds1 6, who wants to be him when he grows up. He just looked really shocked, and kept asking if he was dead 'in real life'.

Seashells · 04/09/2006 10:14

There's going to be alot of sad children around the world today

Ulysees · 04/09/2006 10:18

Oh no, just told ds1 who's almost 9. He's gutted, said how is he going to tell his best friend as she idolised him I just texted her mum so she can break the news. Very very sad and to think how rare this is.

mymama · 04/09/2006 10:19

his wife was trekking through Cradle Mountain - Tasmania (not USA). She is on her way to Cairns.

pinkranger · 04/09/2006 10:20
