ISRAEL: WHEN WILL THE WEST DO SOMETHING?

Am I alone in feeling outraged that Blair et al have said and done nothing about Israel's incursion into Gaza following the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier?

I have been very outspoken on MN about my opposition to the Israeli Government in the past and make no bones about the fact that I do regard it as verging on being a rogue state. Their sustained oppression of the Palestinians is repulsive to me and I see them as legitimised terrorists.

Opinions please.

I do agree that Putin's treatment of the Chechens has been worse than appaling, although of course that does not begin to justify awful attacks like the one on Beslan or the theatre.

its funny that most of you are protesting against the israelis - how can they kill children?
where are any of you protesting - how can the palestinians kill israeli children?
don't forget they were the ones that started this! and they have terrorised israel for many many years.... who was protesting then?!

Greensleeves · 27/07/2006 19:40

When did they start it, exactly? When they were evicted from their homes and told that their country now belonged to someone else? Grow up.

donnie · 27/07/2006 19:40

er ' they were the ones who started this' - this is a joke post, right?

"they started it"

that's alright then. that obviously gives the israelis a license to kill as many children as they ike.

muchfun · 27/07/2006 19:44

so the palestinians have a right to kill as many israelis as they want then!?

SenoraPostrophe · 27/07/2006 19:47

No, but Israel is doing more killing here.

Neither side is blameless, but as I said in a previous post, someone has to make the first move and Israel is in a much better position to do that seeing as it's a state and not a terrorist faction (or at least, it supposedly isn't a terrorist faction).

donnie - the awful thing is that muchfun may well be a real person expressing views held by (it seems) many if not most Israelis and many if not most Americans as well as our very own Tony Blair. I mean, jesus, what has the world come to if the un can't agree to pass a resolution "calling for an immediate ceasefire" ?? I just can't see how anyone could disagree with that but they did.

donnie · 27/07/2006 19:57

totally agree senorapostrophe. How can so many countries not call for a ceasefire - crazy as well as shocking.

However, I do think muchfun is a troll.

Yukos went into insolvency and was rescued by Shell, then placed back into the hands of Rosneft.
Chechnya contributed in oil terms in 2003 0.6% of total Russian oil production. Russia is estimated to hold 27% of international oil reserves
Not that significant from that figure, certainly not compared to what it was pushing out in the 80's
Beslan was as much a Russian police screw up as it was a terrorist outrage.
Chechnya has always fought for independence as far back as the Ottoman era.
But as you say, not relevant to the OP but mind bendingly interesting Uwila

Piffle · 27/07/2006 21:06

to clarify Uwila Yuganskneftegaz (one million barrels per day producer)was sold off to Shell and then sold back on to Rosneft.
Apologies
All this gleaned from jolly old Al Jazeera website

But I thought there were no Hamas supporters on Mumsnet.
