ISRAEL: WHEN WILL THE WEST DO SOMETHING?

Am I alone in feeling outraged that Blair et al have said and done nothing about Israel's incursion into Gaza following the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier?

I have been very outspoken on MN about my opposition to the Israeli Government in the past and make no bones about the fact that I do regard it as verging on being a rogue state. Their sustained oppression of the Palestinians is repulsive to me and I see them as legitimised terrorists.

Opinions please.

It just seems to have been accepted that they have carte blanche to do what they like with the Palestinians. Totally agree with you donnie.

there is no such thing as a legitimate terrorist but I agree the Israeli government are behaving abonimably. the nonsense over the beach shell ("it was a hamas mine") was terrible too.

'nothing legitimises terrorism' is a very arguable point. That's what i believe, too.
BUT that is different from being the ruling state and behaving like the Isreali gvt does in a) their treatment of the Palestinians and their approach to the question of land irrespectibve of any teerrorist action and b) their use of retaliation.

Edward De Bono said in the Observer a few weeks ago that if each side voted for the opposition's rulers and leaders, the problems would quite quickly be resolved. I thought that was very interesting.

well, it depends on who we believe to be 'terrorists' here doesn't it? is the terrorist the individual who boards a bus with a suicide bomb, or the elected body who invades in stealth of night and kills innocent women and children , and blows up bridges and utility buildings in a deliberate bid to cut electricity and water supplies?

I think it is apaulling especially given that the UK and USA istigated the whole problem (so I believe)by creating the state of Israel because they didn't want the problem on their own territory (please don't shoot me if this is wrong).
The amount of money poured into Israle from these two countries is ridiculous when a huge number of the Palestinians are starving....literally.

Not much gets me going to be honest but this REALLY does.

Blair and Bush are so unbelievably retarded IMO. If they could do one single thing to redeem themselves in my eyes it would be to offer some kind of support to the Palestinians and take a stand against the expansionist and racist policies of Israel.

But they won't will they?

I guess I expect it of Bush as he is clearly a lunatic, but I always hoped Blair ( I voted for him twice) had more brains and a bigger heart.

Arafat fucked up big time didn't he buy refusing the compromise offered at Camp David summit which would have given the Palestinians 90% of what they are currently demanding?? (Hope I'm right here..)

I couldn't even read the coverage in the paper today as i felt so heartsick,and that is a first for me.

I dont know enough about it, I agree the situation is appalling but both sides kill innocent people, that's all I wanted to say.

I'll keep this thread on my watch list as I am interested to learn more about the situation but tend to zone out when it comes on the news.

yes you are right moondog. Arafat passed up a huge opportunity for the Palestinians. Clinton was the best thing that ever happened to the middle East for a long time.

I'd say a plague on both their houses, except that there are real, innocent people on both sides here suffering desperately. Israeli treatment of innocent Palestinians is despicable. But so are suicide bombers. And then Israel is surrounded by countries who oppose its very existence, so there's a reason for them being so aggressive.
