George Galloway - insertion not rape

stargirl1701 · 20/08/2012 16:28

Just read a tweet where it is suggested former MP George Galloway feels that once a woman decides to have a sex with a men he can have sex with her subsequently, while she sleeps, as the man doesn't need consent for each "insertion"! In his view, this does not constitute rape. WTF! This is his defence of the allegations against Assange.

No Mme, I won't necessarily ask for a link every time something dubious-sounding is reported - I'd see it as open for a bit of piss taking until it is substantiated (as in this case). So really, take that cats bum face elsewhere if you don't mind.

MmeLindor · 20/08/2012 17:23

If anyone is catbummouth, it is you Pan.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 20/08/2012 17:24

Sorry, but I do think a thread about rape is not the place for jokes, even sarcastic ones.

Personal opinion, I know, but it does seem he said it so unfortunately it's not a misreport.

Chubfuddler · 20/08/2012 17:24

You could try googling it if you think it so unlikely to be true, instead of being deeply offensive for no reason. That wasn't piss taking, given the subject it was horrid. It's a leading story on BBC news app so you wouldn't have had to try hard to verify it.

LePan · 20/08/2012 17:24

No it isn't. It's you.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 20/08/2012 17:25

Some people do hold these views. It reminds me of Ken Clarke's comment a few months ago. I think some politicians live in a very odd world.

Just been put on the BBC website too.

yellowraincoat · 20/08/2012 17:27

Yes, Ken Clarke said something very similar. One of my friends brought it up the other day and said "I can see what he meant though." I was fucking raging.

AND Whoopi Goldberg made that comment about rape. "It wasn't rape rape."

Thanks for that.

LePan · 20/08/2012 17:28

Trouble is, I'm not sure George even knows who his 'audience' may be. 'Defend Assange' was the point, I think, but with 'support like that, who needs detractors?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 20/08/2012 17:30

yellow - oh, I can see what Ken meant too. He meant it's ok to be a rape apologist.

Add these to that sick bastard in the US and it's a pretty depressing picture.

ChickensArentEligableForGold · 20/08/2012 17:32

Isn't this the bloke that pretended to be a cat with Rula Lenska? Because surely no one can ever take the man seriously

Lottapianos · 20/08/2012 17:35

OMG, have just read that BBC link! I know that rape myths are rife but it's still shocking to read something so blatantly misogynistic. I feel ill.

yellowraincoat · 20/08/2012 17:37

The thing is he is taken seriously. He is basically just someone who is good at making sound bites and good at simplistic, quasi-rebellious student politics.

I know a few people who have met him and they've all said the same thing. Superficially charming, but essentially says nothing and comes over as a power-hungry, slimy bastard.

OlympiaMumsnet · 20/08/2012 17:41

AHEM

LePan · 20/08/2012 17:43

I think he is a bit more solid than that stuff, yrc - I particularly liked his stuff on wars with Iraq and Afghanistan. As a (very) left-wing character he is always going to attract attacks in the press and on line, by just about everyone else in politics. Not doing himself any favours here.

LePan · 20/08/2012 17:45

Brevity is sometimes over-rated, Olympia....

When will people get that it's the "insertion" that is the bloody crime, in itself? Assaulting someone or holding them somewhere against their will, if they take place, are separate crimes or aggravating factors. Their absence doesn't mean that sticking your cock into someone who doesn't know about it or doesn't want it is totally fine. It's rape. That's what rape IS.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 20/08/2012 17:54

Well said, elephants.

I might have imagined respecting Galloway for his stance on the wars had it not been extremely clear he is also a total, utter, wanker.

yellowraincoat · 20/08/2012 17:57

LePan I am as left as they come, I agree with what he says, but that doesn't mean I support him. He is an embarrassment to the left and will say anything to get elected.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 20/08/2012 17:59

This is the man who has said and done a lot of things that make my skin crawl. The Rula Lenska thing, if anything, is rather disarming and helps him get away with saying a lot of things that frankly are just sickening.

Saying "Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability." to Saddam Hussein is a particular high.

He has said "homosexuals are not executed in Iran, just rapists" The law is actually that men can be executed on their first conviction and just about every human rights group has condemned Iran for it.

Galloway has described Jerusalem and Baghdad as being "raped" by "foreigners," referring to Israel's illegal annexation of East Jerusalem, and the war in Iraq.

And thats just the tip of the iceberg. His wiki-profile is a litany of horrors, outrageous and dangerous comments.

We worry when BNP councillors are elected; we should be just as worried that this man has also been elected on numerous occasions. It shows something is very, very wrong with politics and if he was my local MP it would scare me to death. We should be worried by the extreme things he comes out with.

LePan · 20/08/2012 17:59

I am the same yrc - agree 100% with a lot of his stuff - wouldn't give him a sniff of power though.

DilysPrice · 20/08/2012 18:02

I reckon they should ask him again. Give the same facts and say the accused is...Euan Blair (PURELY HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE) or someone. See how quickly he quotes Andrea Dworkin.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 20/08/2012 18:03

Why would you let facts get in the way of a good Galloway rant?
