George Galloway - insertion not rape

stargirl1701 · 20/08/2012 16:28

Just read a tweet where it is suggested former MP George Galloway feels that once a woman decides to have a sex with a men he can have sex with her subsequently, while she sleeps, as the man doesn't need consent for each "insertion"! In his view, this does not constitute rape. WTF! This is his defence of the allegations against Assange.

OP posts:

Isn't WIkiLeaks a bit of a group effort, as well? IE the freedom of the world is not actually dependent on one alleged rapist being allowed to consider himself entirely above the law? It does seem as though Julian Assange is a 'hero' because he keeps shouting about how much of a hero he is (with the implication that this makes it perfectly OK for him to have sex on whatever woman he decides to have sex on, and all those unimportant women should shut the fuck up and feel honoured...)

solidgoldbrass · 22/08/2012 01:01

Anyway, more about 'bad sexual etiquette'

Incinerating Assange - the Liberal media goes to work.

Agree with SGB, both posts.

MmeLindor · 22/08/2012 09:41

Children
That is a hilarious article (although I don't think it was intended as such). How can anyone hold Assange up as a fighter for freedom? For his own freedom, perhaps.

Seems to be extremely unfair that he has been swanning around Europe, funded by his supporters, when Bradley Manning has been locked up in (allegedly) horrible conditions.

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 22/08/2012 10:46

Should have said - that 'newsthump' article is quite flippant in parts; if anyone finds it offensive I'll happily ask for it to be deleted. I just thought it made a good point.

Potmouse · 22/08/2012 11:10

The more I see Assange, and read the things he says the more convinced I am that he is autistic. Seriously, watch him when he speaks. And the megalomania. He clearly has no idea of what goes on in other people's heads at all. I really think he thinks he is the only sentient being in the world.

Chubfuddler · 22/08/2012 11:13

Assanges supporters seem blind to the possibility that he and wiki leaks could have done good and important things to challenge illegal actions by governments and he could be guilty of these offences. It's not an either/or.

DuelingFanjo · 22/08/2012 11:20

I read through all 'evidence' on the guardian article linked to earlier. I sure looks like Assange immediately put it out there within hours of the accusations that it was some kind of American conspiracy and his legal team immediately started talking rape myths.

THERhubarb · 22/08/2012 11:22

MmeLindor, I posted The Guardian link and it was not to convince anyone of the alleged conspiracy allegations. I posted it because they were covering both issues, both the rape allegations and the conspiracy argument.

My own stand is that I don't know and I've made my ignorance very clear from the start.
The evidence is all over the place and seems to be very confusing. On this basis alone and because I wasn't there, I have to say that I reserve my judgement. He has not yet been found guilty and until then I'll continue to sit on the "don't know" camp.

THERhubarb · 22/08/2012 11:22

Chubfuddler - very good point there.

Chubfuddler · 22/08/2012 11:40

I don't think anyone can say JA is definitely guilty. We can say however that the circumstance GG described is legally rape.

MrsBucketxx · 22/08/2012 11:46

GG needs to do the right thing now and admit he was wrong, having the legality pointed out to him.

i just hope his constituants dont re elect and put him out of a job.

THERhubarb · 22/08/2012 12:21

Yes Chub, the circumstances that GG referred to IS rape.
A woman is not a thing that is owned. You cannot presume that one 'yes' means a sexual contract has been entered into that gives you shagging rights for the rest of that night.
A woman's body is her own and yes you damn well need permission every time you want to enter that body.

If a woman is asleep or otherwise incapable of giving permission then a man has no right to take anything from her, sexual or otherwise.

It is most definitely illegal, it is most definitely a crime and it is most definitely morally wrong. It is not a victimless crime but actually makes the woman feel worthless, used and violated.

Whether or not Assange is guilty of such a crime is up to a judge and jury to decide with all the evidence in front of them, including witnessess and testimony by the women involved.

Whether or not George Galloway is an ignorant wanker is up to the great public to decide with the benefit of all the relevant evidence at their disposal.

KRITIQ · 22/08/2012 13:53

For what it's worth, Galloway has been sacked as a columnist for Holyrood Magazine and Salma Yaqoob, Leader of the Respect Party (of which he is a member) has made a powerful statement condemning Galloway.

MooncupGoddess · 22/08/2012 13:55

Good news, Kritiq. And in fact the tide of condemnation for Galloway and Todd Akin does show that attitudes are changing, albeit too slowly.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 22/08/2012 13:58

Good.

AnyFucker · 22/08/2012 14:01

I saw the statemnt from Ms Yaqoob

Hopefully, it will make GG's position within the party untenaable and he will be forced to resign

it's great when these situations start to develop a momentum all of their own

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 22/08/2012 14:44

Yes, good statement by Salma Yaqoob

MontBlanc · 22/08/2012 14:58

Excellent statement by Salma.

It really does beggar belief that George Galloway, a politician, doesn't actually understand the law.

However, it really doesn't matter what he 'thinks' happened, only a court of law can decide if Julian Assange is guilty and for him to cower in the Equador embassy to avoid facing up to these charges is disgusting and cowardly. They way he appeared like a film star on the balcony to make his statement made my stomach churn.

THERhubarb · 22/08/2012 15:12

Absolutely. The fact that such a so-called politician feels the need to comment on a case that has not yet gone to court and not only that, but generally act as though he was in full possession of the facts and was the judge and jury, shows just how ignorant he is of the law.

If Assange committed that crime in the UK and Galloway made such a statement he would surely be held in contempt of court?

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 23/08/2012 17:15

Melanie McDonagh is being snide in the Standard about Louise Mensch and saying that George Galloway didn't have "a happy turn of phrase" but that his argument was reasonable. Sounds almost like Mr "Mis-spoke" in the US.

Oh, and that Louise was a drip for giving up the day job. Lovely.

scottishmummy · 23/08/2012 21:35

with friends like Galloway and goldsmith, assange needs some enemies
those muppets supporting assange,hardly reassuring

floatingquoter · 04/09/2012 15:56
